by tecumseh78
Ok, I´m really a sucker for the afore mentioned genre and since it´s never enough I´d like to discover more, especially cause me being a bit far away from the musical scene (Hellsinki, oh yeah)
So here I can post some of the bands I´m into:
Explosions in the sky
Mogwai
Giardini di Miró
God is an astronaut
M83
Mono
GYBE! and other bands on the constellation records
Pelican
Red Sparrowes

And if u EXTREMELY kind it would be nice also some tip about dream pop bands (in the likes of Radio Dept, Sambassadeur....)

KIITOS (thanxs in finn)!!!!!!!!!!

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

The Cathode Ray Syndrome
The Album Leaf
Up C Down C Left C Right C + ABC + Start

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Thanx man... The Up C Down C Left C Right C + ABC + Start is really interesting, too bad that so far they produced only vinils, so maybe hoping in a cd release of the album in september

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Grails (followers of the Dirty Three school of postrocking, violin etc but heavier in places)
My Education (piano-led postrock, the second record "Italian" is very good)
Love Of Everything (the first record is sorta heavy guitar pop, all instrumental)
Kinski (drone-y postrock, great)
Ultraviolet Makes Me Sick (Spanish band, generic postrock)
The Letter E (ex-June of 44)
Skeletons (dreamy, future soul electro pop)
Volta Do Mar (mathy/jazzy postrock)
KC Accidental (stoned out dreamy instrumentals)
Asobi Seksu (MBV-loving kids with a name that means "playful sex")
Magyar Posse (more postrock)
All Combinations (have a free album up here and have been compared to GYBE! and Mogwai, some vocals)

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

thanx to u too, just to correct Ultraviolet makes me sick r italian and not spanish... U know we r proud people...

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Doh, consider me corrected.

Also, try The London Apartments for some serious dreampop.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Thanx to u,
K.C. accidental and the all combination r really quality!

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

are kc accidental related to broken social scene?

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Yeah. They're part of that massive Arts & Crafts family tree. Check it out here, somewhere.

There's definitely some KC Accidental members in BSS - the first BSS album sounds a hell of a lot like the KC Accidental releases.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

and they have a song called KC Accidental on 'You Forgot It In People'

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

LISTEN TO THE FOR CARNATION AND SLINT

sorry for the shouting but they are both wonderful. The eponymous album by The For Carnation is possibly my favourite album. And Spiderland is obviously perfect.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

65 Days of Static - www.myspace.com/65daysofstatic
Loss of a Child - www.myspace.com/lossofachild
Milhaven - www.myspace.com/milhaven

I'll think of some more later....

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Also http://music.download.com/2001-8606_32-0.html?tag=nav_dir& has a whole Post-Rock section :)

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

they split tho, innit. same goes fer grails (who i think are terrible)
that lossofachild are good, to say i only heard them from a shameless plug.

www.sennen.org.uk (not instrumental but with awesome instrumental bits)
www.theexploitsofelaine.co.uk (bite-sized post-rock, and good for you)
also search for John Barnes and A Beautiful Machine

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Grails rule!

Also Enablers, but that has talking (spoken word) on top of ze post-rock.

You might also like the Cinematic Orchestra.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Thought of one more: Del Rey. Check them out on epitonic - they're pretty good.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Exploits of Elaine are pretty useful.

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies (not technically instrumental on the basis they have some vocals but still deserve a plug on this thread)

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

three movements, they arent bad at all

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

^^ Also great but same as YMSS, have vocals....

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

One very excellent instrumental only band that I don't think has been mentioned, is Detwiije http://www.detwiije.com/

You can hear some samples of their music on their site. One I would recommend listening to is 'La Guerre des Mondes'

I have seen them perform three times now, and they got a review from me twice!

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Ahhh! Detwiije rock. How could we forget about them? "Would You Rather Be Followed By Forty Ducks For The Rest Of Your Life?" is an awesome album (and title).

Souvaris (from Londinium, no less) are also great. Check them out here. Four track, 70+ minute album? Lovely. If anyone wants some of their stuff, send me a PM - I don't know how many copies of their records they even have left.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

londinium? aint they a notts band.
i find them really boring on record but live they are ace.
The Detwiije mini album is awesome too

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Could've sworn they were London-based. Bugger. Considering my previous record on getting hometowns wrong, I now refuse to comment upon the locality of any band.

I don't know, I really enjoyed listening to the record - you have to have an hour and a bit to spare to do the whole thing, mind. Be He That Lives To Telephonic Only! is really, really good.

I'm glad we agree that Detwiije are great :)

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

yeh, and Stars (jus looked at yr profile)
amusement parks on fire have some good instrumental stuff too.
hangedup are also spiffy

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Amusement parks on fire are good. Just a shame that they sound so much like my bloody valentine (to my admittedly unknowledgable about shoegaze ears). Whenever i listen to them i just want to stick loveless on instead.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Hah, yes, I guess so. It's Loveless with 00's production and singing you can hear.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Apologies if any of the following bands have been metioned but I can't be arsed to read the whole thread. Try:

The Antarcticans
Magnog
Friends Of Dean Martinez
Labradford
Mountain Men Anonymous
Sketchie
Pelican
Isis
Cult Of Luna
Jeniferever
The Album Leaf
Ostinato
The Workhouse
Slowdive
The Appleseed Cast (Low Level Owl albums)
65daysofstatic

^Not all strictly post-rock but I love the genre and all the above share characteristics with it.

Oh yeah...and my band:
www.myspace.com/thebigsleep *blushes*

Apologies for shameless plugging.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Clynder Sound

http://www.clyndersound.com/

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

slintslintslintslintslint

slowdive
isis (i've sadly not heard much, but what i have...wow)

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Blink 182.

I'm bored, and all the Post-rock bands i know have already been mentioned.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Just found out that Detwiije are to play at The Spitz, on the 6th July. Looking forward to it already!

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Well, I'd say find some Town & Country and Do Make Say Think.
I would also say: lighten up.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Do Make Say Think liek totally fucking rule. Yeah.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

In addition to those previously mentioned:
Shipping News
The Enablers
Jakob
Jeniferever
Fly Pan Am
Pan American (Anyone on Kranky Records really)
A Day In Black And White
Pinback
Old Man Gloom
A Whisper In The Noise
Amusment Parks On Fire
Lift To Experience

Of course they're not all strictly post-rock groups, but I think you'll like them.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Souvaris are indeed based in Nottingham. And very fine they are too. Their album's wonderful- the first and last tracks especially so. They're writing new stuff at the moment too.

No-one's mentioned Tarentel thus far, which is a crying shame, as they're a fantastic band. For Carl Sagan is a stunning piece of music- even it is incredibly simple.

65*daysofstatic are on everyone's lips at the moment, but I think Mountain Men Anonymous are far better at the whole electronica meets post-rock type thing. But I think YMSS are the band who're really taking post-rock influences (along with a hell of a lot else) and setting an agenda.

And Redjetson make a bloody beautiful noise, too.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

No one has mentioned Hood yet! I suppose their not strictly post-rock, but they make beautiful music so who cares what genre they are? Cold House is a fucking lovely record.

Also the Daddies of the genre Tortoise seemed to have been missed; TNT, Millions Now Living, and Standards are Jazzy master peices.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

meh, not a fan of either band.

i agree with Dave, MMA do the glitchy post-rock stuff way better than 65dos. the (now Ex) MMA drummer is probably the best drummer this side of the atlantic in terms of technical ability and amazing beats. listen to the build up in 'westole yr rhyming dictionaries'.
plus 'finding heart thru pain' deserved to get to number one, shoulda released single and the video (although the vid sounded terrible) before they split

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

I certainly agree about bothYMSS ans Redjetson. I would need to hear some of Mountain Men Anonymous's music to decide for myself. I am a big fan of 65, so would welcome the chance to compare them with MMA. Where/what should I listen too?

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Pinback are special.

And listen to The Appleseed Cast "Low Level Owl" records, whoever posted made a good move. They're special too.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Pan American are fucking great.

Continuing in the more electronica vein, Isan are rather nice. To Rococo Rot have their moments too.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

hey allesandro,

sorry about forgetting to pm you back about more mixtapes, i just saw your post-rock thread. i'm in the middle of exams at the moment, but as soon as i finish, well do more overseas-trading.

mike_x

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

ok, so...wrote in the wrong box. good job it wasn't that other...who ami kidding, i never PM anything sexual to dis members. i am a failure. anyway, ignore postage above.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

you could also try

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies
Oxes
Secondsmile
Jeniferever
65 days of static
Caterpillar Ghost

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Try Rachel's too, beautiful post-rock chamber music.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Secondsmile? They're a hardcore band!! Good though.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

have you heard their new material?
it's much more instrumental based and really good as well

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Probably not post-rock in the sense that you’re meaning (I’m shit at genres!), but…
Yume Bitsu; Love of Diagrams; Sigur Rós; Tortoise; Flying Saucer Attack…

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Ooo...yes...Flying Saucer Attack are fantastic...always fill me with a really weird sense of unease for some reason. I need to get some more stuff by them - any recommendations? I've had the self-titled album for about a year now and I love it.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Firstly, check out this amazing new band from San Diego:
www.sleepingpeople.com

Many great bands have been mentioned but what about RUMAH SAKIT????? Maybe the best instrumental band Ive ever heard. Also THE MERCURY PROGRAM and TARENTEL'S first two albums are great. Also try PULLMAN, BATTLES, FROM MONUMENT TO MASSES, LABRADFORD, MASERATI'S THE LANGUAGE OF CITIES, ROCKETS RED GLARE, THE CANCER CONSPIRACY, POLMO POLPO, THE FOR CARNATION, WINDSOR FOR THE DERBY, WEIGHTS AND MEASURES, RADIAN, PAUL NEWMAN, OXES, GHOSTS AND VODKA, ILIUM, GWEI LO, HOLDING PATTERN

Most of these are available from Indound or Amazon.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

I know it's not purely instrumental, and it's probably an obvious choice of where not to look but it's really worth getting hold of the newest Neurosis album-it's heading into that kinda genre and it really is sonically over-powering, a seriously awesome record.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

did Up C Down C Left C Right C + ABC + Start get their name from a sonic the hedgehog cheat code?

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Looking at all the replies, you all need to check out dredg (www.dredg.com) they have a new album out now "catch without arms" which is awesome, and probably their most "accessible", but the other two are also great! "leitmotif" is the heaviest, and "el cielo" is, well, just amazing!

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Mr. 1986!!!

See thread somewhere in the middle of the forum page for more information and stuff.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Oh yeah, and they're (dredg, that is) playing the metro on oxford street on the 6th of July, and the garage in islington on the 7th - and I have tickets for both!

Even MTV are waking up slowly (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1503612/20050607/index.jhtml?headlines=true) - no mention of the in DiS yet though..... ;)

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Finally, a second mention for Dredg. I've got a ticket for the 7th and debating whether I can afford the 6th too....

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

I'd probably go without food for a week if necessary, I've wanted to see these guys for years!

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

I had tickets to the Glassjaw/Dredg London show back in 2003 which got cancelled and neither has been back since. Luckily got to see Glassjaw years before but gonna be so hyper on the 7th!!

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Timonium - shoegazery post-rock.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Yes, up-c down-c left-c right-c abc start did get their name from a computer game cheat, quite possibly a sonic game. they also happen to be very good, although don't try and book them for a gig, the person who does their bookings is rubbish!

also worth checking out:
Moly
oxes
zelega
redjetson
65daysofstatic
ymss
sunnyvale noise sub-element
ann arbor

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Of course! How could I forget Oxes and Sunnyvale Noise Sub-element? I saw them both just the other week, very impressed. Sunnyvale's new EP is very good.

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Ah yes, I am a fellow sucker for instrumental rock. Most of the stuff I listen to generally includes vocals but has a nice speck or more of instrumental bliss.

Isis - I imagine you're familiar since you listed Red Sparrowes, as they're a side-project. Panopticon is a dominantly instrumental album with tender ambience and powerful climaxes. One of very few groups that can give me a 'music orgasm'.

Porcupine Tree - although they're doing more vocalized prog rock lately, founder Steve Wilson began with a very Pink Floyd feel. Voyage 34 is basically an hour long song split into 4 phases, completely instrumental aside from the various samples. "Wedding Nails" from In Absentia just goes to show Steve's instrumental prowess...kinda reminded me of Joe Satriani when I first heard it.

Joe Satriani - yes, might as well since I mentioned it. The guitar virtuoso of the generation who dabbles in all styles, even re-making classics like Beethoven's 5th and "Flight of the Bumblebee." "Mountain Song" is still one of my favorite instrumental rock pieces today.

Matter - An instrumental group established by a member of Toolarmy. I'm not entirely sure if they're going to stay that way, but their current material is phenominal without vocals, so I sincerely hope they stay that way. Catch some of their original stuff and Tool covers here: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/9/markmatter_music.htm

Equinon - Another group I found on Toolarmy. More straightfowardly prog rock than Matter and just as good, even considering the less than par recording quality. Once they have a label to release from, I expect great things to come. See some of their stuff here: http://myspace.com/equinon

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

I'm listening to the Red Sparowes album for the first time right now. It's possibly the best post-rock album I've heard yet. I'm only on track 4, but.. wow

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

It certainly is a stunning album. I went to see them twice when they played in London recently, very good!

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

For everybody interested in Pelican, Explosion in the sky and so on, I wanna recommend a swiss band really really top notch: The Evpatoria Report. I´m just listening now the their album "Golevka" and it´s brilliant, it sounds similar to Mono, but maybe with heavier riffs (that´s why I thought of Pelican)... And BTW the new Pelican is ace!

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

I think it's time for post-post-rock. Or maybe post-post-post-rock. Or maybe...

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

I have a lot of problems with all those definitions

for example is "Bohren & the club of Gore" also post-rock or post-post-rock or... ;)

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Not post rock, more grindish but excellent, Gore, from Holland. Don't know if they're still going. They did instrumental albums with a lyric sheet, what more could you possibly want from life ?

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

hehe. bohren is evil lounge core :)

by the way, i dunno if they whored themselves, but lossofachild are pretty fly. maybe im jus sayin that cos im gettin a CD sent, but who cares

Re: GIMME SOME MORE INSTRUMENTAL POST-ROCK!!!!!

Was sent on Tuesday, should be there soon :)

Some more whoring : www.myspace.com/lossofachild
