Artists: Adem

Following in the recently-laid footsteps of Cat Power and Scarlett Johansson, Adem will release an album of covers later this spring.

The solo artist has reinterpreted 12 tracks released during the ten years from 1991 to 2001; a period that inspired and informed the 30-year-old while he was growing up.

Takes will be released through Domino on the 12th of May. What’s on it? See below:

‘Bedside Table’ - Bedhead (1992)
Oh My Lover’ – PJ Harvey (1992)
Slide’ – Lisa Germano (1998)
Loro’ – Pinback (1998)
Hotellounge’ – dEUS (1994)
To Cure a Weakling Child + Boy/Girl Song’ – Aphex Twin (1996)
Tears are in Your Eyes’ - Yo La Tengo (2000)
Starla’ - Smashing Pumpkins (1992)
Gamera’ - Tortoise (1995)
Unravel’ - Bjork (1997)
Invisible Man’ - The Breeders (1993)
Laser Beam’ - Low (2001)

To celebrate the release of Takes Adem will be appearing alongside some special guests at the Union Chapel in London on the 25th of May. Tickets for what will be his first headline show for a while cost £11.50 and you can find them here.

I love 'Boy/Girl Song'

That is all

theres something about adem that is ...smug

For irrational reasons both he and keiran hebden make my skin crawl...they seem so self indulgent and self satisfied.

i also seem to see Adem evereywhere....it's like hes stalking me. its weird

oh for fecks sake

what a nightmare this sounds....he's about half a step away from being david gray. don't worry rosbeef i too irrationally hate him with a passion that borders on insanity. probably because he's everything i hate about that breed of middle class london aren't-i-great-and-look-at-my-exquisite-taste smug rich kids. notably he doesn't cover anything by a band no-one has heard of.

Hmm

Why is that "irrational"?

Rosbeef:

I strongly disagree, Mr Ilhan is one of the nicest, most genuine musicians I've ever met and I get no sense of smugness from him or Kieran Hebden.

And Demons: you suck, quite frankly.

Go and make an album as good as 'Homesongs' or 'Rounds' and then barrage us with your ridiculous, ill-informed opinions.

ok i know exactly why i dislike him

greenman 2006. he played on the stage friday.

after hours he played exactly the same set in the campsite. on the friday

If anyone talked or joined in he shushed them. the people in the tents around got shushed by him also.

The same happened on the saturday. It was really REALLY annoying....

and i have to say homesongs was almost universally bland....

as for hebden....i don't like the way his production basically means 'fortet-ing' whatever happens to be playing (as it is on the adem album...starts with some fortet-goes david gray-ends with fortet'

He more or less ruined the second james yorkston record- none of the passion or energy of the live shows-i put that mostly down to hebden.

greenman

i wasn't there but i heard about this. my brother got so pissed off with adem bloody droning on all night around the campsites that he was found queuing for the bus the next day to go home. the spirit of folk music is to have a sense of community and let everyone have a go and join in and not to be insular and certainly not shushing if other people dare to have a go.

hebden on the other hand i admit has done some good stuff in the past but that collaboration with steve reid is simply dreadful and he did indeed ruin yorkstons second album with the flat production. notably yorkstons last lp without hebden was much more like it.

I liked Homesongs but i don't think i could listen to it now,

even moreso after reading that Greenman story. What a self indulgent twat!

they're not that good....

....and i was only talking about adem not hebden who i think is talented but way over rated....they may be ridiculous opinions but they are certainly not ill informed. i've seen adem live on several occasions and heard all his records - i think he's smug and his music is very very average and bland. he's just a typical london careerist who has had it all on a plate. theres no soul to anything he does. its all about jumping on bandwagons and schmoozing with people who can give him a leg up in his career. that might be fine for some people and of course it is but to me the music that comes out is very safe, non threatening and not at all interesting.therefore i liken him nearer to singer songwriters such as david gray than to the more interesting, original musicians to which he is often aligned.

my mum finds adem bland...fact

but then she likes crass

sheesh

I must be the only DISer that likes him then. I think 'Homesongs' is a minor classic, actually, and it could teach most other modern musicians a thing or two about production, how volume dynamics can give a sense of space to a record (instead of relentless punch).

Am really looking forward to this new album.

i think he is fucking ace!!!!

homesongs espcially
x

Music blog?

I thought this site was about music? If you don't like Adem's music fine! Your choice, but all these posts seem to be sad ill informed comments about the character of the artist about which you clearly know nothing. He is far from being a spoilt smug rich kid. However I am incredibly smug in knowing that whatever rubbish you write in reply to this is obviously not based on fact but sad bitchy opinion.
