i genuinely think this is one of the most breathtaking albums i've ever heard and even after months and months of listening you always find something new etc...
i also fail to see why people say its rubbish or disappointing, especially those who champion their earlier stuff over it. there are some great bits in animal collectives back catalogue for sure, but i just think strawberry jam is such a good album.
anyway, why do some people dislike it? how can people be disappointed with this album? someone give me a clue...
I love it but people that have followed the band for such a long time seem to have difficulty with t
*the production values
yeah,
i've noticed this. i think the fact that they signed to domino has something to do with it too
plus all the 'hardcore' fans liking the 'earlier' stuff by default and everything...
I think that
because it's quite different to their early stuff, a lot poppier and accessible, means it's quite understandable that people could prefer the earlier stuff.
I'm a fan most of their stuff, but would choose Feels and Strawberry Jam over the earlier stuff.
it's my fav animal collective album
so i really don't understand the dislike either!
amazing album
better than feels now.
but,
spirit they're gone spirit they've vanished is at least 4 times better and strawberry jam wasnt really such a huge progression from feels.
it's amazing
but i understand the haterzz, even though they are wrong.. i also think the panda bear record was better tbh.
whatever, strawberry jam is still incredible.
Having only got into them
Two weeks ago or whatever, and this being my first AC album, I have to say it's a really great album. It's not perfect, but it's so full of life and charm and ideas that I can't help but love it.
Fireworks is also a great song to lift your mood whenever you're feeling blue.
I love love love it.
I really like
I think its their best, and because of this album I like their older stuff more now.
I thought it was the best album released last year
I like Person Pitch alot also but to me Strawberry Jam was better.
I pretty much second this
One of the best albums of last year, and possibly my favourite Animal Collective album. That, or Sung Tongs.
serious point.
i think some of the back lash to the album is the fact that alot of people had been listening to those songs for 2 years before the album came out as they played the songs whilst touring feels. you know how you love a song live but then it gets recorded and doesnt sound how you expected/wanted.
true
i remember seeing reverend green live actually and shitting myself right there and then due to an overwhelming sense of anticipation...i think they did a great job of that though
.
listening to the boots, strawberry jam coud have gone to ways, back noisy or somewhere along the way of feels. some people were bound to be disappointed. plus think about it, they went from a noise band(danse) then released an album solely produced on acoustic guitars and vocals(tongs) people must have flipped, then essentially a pop band(feels,i dont mean that in a derogatory way, pops good). i think people were expecting something different, whilst SJ at times seems like a straight forward sequel to feels.
I don't get it.
I can see how the record's production
is a love it or hate it sorta thing. It's all sharp edges personally, I love it. Recently I've been listening to bootlegs of their live shows and the new songs are sounding brilliant i.e House, Bearhug, Dreamer, Daily Routine and Brother Sport.
agreed
brother sport is probably the best new track i have heard all year
^ this
i cannot wait for their next one. i like the new songs better than the strawberry jam songs (maybe derek excluded). house is one of my favorite melodies they've done yet.
hell yes
HOUSE. And all of it's micro-house loveliness.
How long
did it take for you to get into the album? im on my first listen and i thi nk it is pretty good. .but how long before i fully appreciate it?
I 'got' Reverend Green and Fireworks
straight away on the first listen. Then after 2 or 3 it showed itself for what it was. Arguably the best album of last year.
i've stopped liking them as much as i used to
which is a shame, because they're a really interesting band, just quite hard work
I found it very dense.
Almost too dense. My musical taste seems to have shifted back to more straightforward pop-rock acts. Anything the slightest bit progressive goes over my head nowadays.
DENSE MANATEE
no? ok
i think
it's a good album but sung tongs was way much better! to me that was their last album.
at the moment there are so many new bands taking from ac but actually sounding better...
like el guincho, le loup, banjo or freak out, grizzly bear, ariel pink and yeah of course panda bear...
Its amazing
but not as half as amazing as sung tongs
no idea
it is a lovely album
SJ
is my favourite Animal Collective...totally up there and beyond Sung Tongs. Feels had some amazing moments but SJ is full of those moments. It's a brilliant full-on pop record.
All the post-AC bands about now seem pretty pale imitators from what I've heard.
I love it too
Having listend to most of their previous albums many times I can honestly say its my favourite.
It's really catchy too.
Oh and as much as I like the Panda Bear album
I prefere this, it might even be my favourite album of last year.
Why am I
the only person I know who thinks that Winter Wonderland is the best song on it?
yeah, i think you might be
i dont think theres anything about it that make it stand out above the rest.
fireworks/chores/#1 are my favs depending on what day it is.
they shouldnt have left safer off the album IMO
it's really
one of the better things to happen to music ever. that being said, Here Comes the Indian, Sung Tongs, and Feels were all just a bit better. it's hard to say something is better that Strawberry Jam, but I think it's true. the band refuses not to be extraordinary.
how come no one mentions spirit
in these threads, whats wrong with it?
April and the Phantom, Pennydreadfuls, Chocolate Girl, La Rapet, Bat You'll Fly are all amazing as is pandas drumming.
Not to mention Alvin Row, which is one of the best songs ever.
nothing's wrong with it at all
that album blows my fucking mind. however, I do feel that everything they've done under the name Animal Collective is better.
i forgot it was released originally as avey tare and panda bear
its good to know its not been forgotten. i think people are put off by how high the drums are in the mix. i guess whats so amazing about this band is how much their sound has changed whilst still keeping that animal collective thing they do (whatever that is)
and likewise
the avant-garde thin sound Danse Manatee provided is something I've always cherished.
