What the hell is wrong with this country?
For the last couple of weeks our water cooler's been busted and people at work have been preferring to go without water, or go out and buy water, than to drink tap water. People have stopped putting out a jug of water for visitors because it would be tap water (thus meaning they ask for water anyway and I have to go and get it. From the tap.)
At what point did people become so fucking terrified of tap water? Sure, it's not as cold as water from a water cooler and maybe bottled water tastes marginally better but it is NOT a big deal to have to drink water out of a tap water.
I mean for fuck's sake the water in taps is clean, purified water that's entirely healthy to drink. In some countries people don't even get that, let alone the luxury of buying bottled stuff in plastic bottles from several hundred miles away that costs a fortune and causes entirely unnecessary (if probably minor overall) global enviromental damage through plane transportation, plastic disposal etc.
It seems we are all as a collective whole becoming ridiculously over-pampered, spoilt brats who can't cope with anything being given to us in anything less than entirely controlled circumstances.
I swear it can't be good for us either. How the hell are you supposed to build up resistence to germs or allergies if you're never near anything even mildly harmful?
The damage bottled water causes
is actually pretty considerable too. Why do people buy Nike shoes rather than Primark trainers?
I only ever drink bottled water
if there is no tap available for my use. Which is very rare.
I don't understand people who drink bottled water, why pay for something that can be obtained even easier for free?
There is a water cooler in my college, which I often use because it is colder than tap water. A guy in my class actually buys bottled water from the canteen instead of taking the free stuff from the cooler, this is just ridiculous.
Tap water FTW.
I fully ensorse this product or service
and i hate on my water bottle which i constantly refil how it says "DO NOT REFILL".. OH SHUT UP VOLVIC. I'LL DO WHAT I WANT.
Does it really say that?
That's shameless and wasteful. :(
it really does
I know someone who claimed it was
'bad for you' to refill bottles. WHERE ARE PEOPLE GETTING THEIR MISINFORMATION?
my co-worker said..
it was due to the 'breakdown of the plastic chemicals into the water'.. doesn't plastic take a while to breakdown? especially to the point where the chemicals would make me ill? it's not like i have had this bottle for decades or something. people are stupid.
refer them to this:

I wish I didn't get worked up about this
but I do. It does sometimes feel like I missed some major event - NO-ONE used to buy bottled water unless they needed the plastic bottle. I blame parents who let their kids drink fizzy pop at dinner times. Or something. Rah rah rah.
I always used to ency the kids that got fizzy drinks at home.
I just got diluted drinks. Fizzy drinks were something I drank at parties or when I had enough dinner money left over to buy it on the way home.
It wasn't a health thing, just a cheapness thing.
^
Fizzy drinks are a TREAT. Kids these days don't know they're born.
Mind you
my mum only put crisps in my packed lunch on Fridays, because she's some kind of Nazi, puritan maniac.
mine too!
and in the end i respected her for it... until she had the second round of kids (my half-brothers) and gave them chips and fizzy drinks all the time! not to mention their video games, which were also banned from my childhood... grrr.
Yeah, stupid c-section kids.
I gave up fizzy drinks for New Year. I don't miss them at all
I'm going to give up fizzy drinks now. As a result of this thread.
Anyone remember Dasani?

I prefer bottled water
as it appeals to my sense of ostentation and self-worth. Tap water is for plebs. I can afford bottled water, so that's what I drink.
It perplexes me too
why pay for something you can get for free? It's only necessary to buy bottled water in places where they don't actually purify their water surely?
there was something dumb
in one of the free london rags. a column by someone on the intricacies how to order tap water in a restaurant without looking like a cheap fucktard. went on for miles, detailing the potential pitfalls, and how to avoid them.
how about
"I'll have some tap water, please"?
Prole
FACTORAMA:
The combined spend on bottled water at BBC London and BBC Glasgow is £313,000 per year.
Nice.
i'm just a bit used to the water in north wales
which used to make me puke normally, and then they let a load of sheep shit in the reservoir and then half the town ended up in hospital
I drink tap water everywhere.
At the weekend I drank straight from a stream because I was in the middle of nowhere. It tasted fucking amazing. We in Scotland probably have it pretty good though, the water up here is intense.
Intense.
Just to clarify
the water in Scotland is intense, right?
Intense.
You heard it here first.
It's a marketing triumph
We went years and years doing fine with tap water, and then suddenly the public assumes it's not as clean
As much as you may hate it, you have to admire the way in which a few companies have managed to change an entire nation's perception on something we never once questioned before
There was a good thing on BBC 1 recently about this, highlighting the cleanliness of various brands of bottled water compared to stuff from the tap. There was barely any difference, and in many cases the tap water was actually cleaner. It also showed a £22 bottle of 'Fijian spring water', or something, that was served in Claridges
But again, as much as these things may sound ridiculous, you can't underestimate the placebo effect of people drinking stuff they believe is 'cleaner'. Most of the things we consume are completely unessential and companies obviously take advantage of this. I guess it's a bit naive to expect water to be any different, really
The thing that confuses me slightly more are the people that drink 'healthy' flavoured water, which, obviously, is riddled with sugar. And it tastes fucking rank anyway. I mean, flavoured water?
My bro
wouldn't get me sparkling water (£2) in the pub, first he swore at the ceiling, then looked a bit sheepish, then just bought me a bottle of red wine. (£12).
Sparkling water is acceptable
in fact, it's quite nice.
