Where's the best place to start with them?

iceland

.

( )

^ actual answer

It's by far my favourite

pretty much

not this album

it's far less fulfilling than agaetis byrjun, not as euphoric or accessible.
it has a few good tracks but it's just not as 'lush' as the other albums.

Agaetis Byrjun

or Takk, the latter being pretty accessible

they're all good...

but i reckon agaetis byrjun is the one. you can't really go far wrong though. having said that, von is probably best avoided.

Depends what you're looking

for them to satisfy.

If its their accessible, slightly poppy, all over BBC side, go for Takk.

If its they're slightly-less-epic side but with the tunes everyone remembers, go for Agaetis Byrjun.

If its soul-destroyingly amazing music that'll make you weep due to the fact you'll never ever be that good, get ( ).

songwise

njosvaellin from ()
hun jord from Von
staralfur from Agaetis Byrjun
andvari from Takk..

Takk

Takk
Takk
Takk
Takk

agaetis byrjun

then ()

Not Takk

Agaetis Byrjun

That, () and Takk are all equally great. Agaetis is probably the best starting point though.

( ) totally

It will make you weep and weep and weep.

The others are good too.

I have to say 'von'

cos no-one else has....

well it's where to start if you are going chronologically. About 1/3 of the tracks are beautiful(though a bit shoe-gazey) but there is a lot of filler.

Takk

I've only heard Agaestis Byrjun and this and Takk wins hands down.

i don't think you could go too far wrong

starting at any point in their back catalogue.

takk... is the most accessible, () is breathtaking in parts, and agaetis brjgun (sp?) probably has some of their best songs on it (svefn-g-englar and staralfur especially).

Just don't

they're massively overrated and pretentious. Just get a Mono album instead.

...

And ignore this comment

*rushes to defend sigur ros*

Or we could start a thread - best mono album? I know that would be the one that has the slow burning epic build up post rock by numbers tracks on it. What was that called? You are the Pipal Tree? Something like that....

Actually I do quite like Mono. But, though good, they can be samey and are not a patch on the majesty that is Sigur Ros.

I guess.

But Mono are so magical. Sigur Ros just bore me. And their whole invented language stuff really is irritating. Sorry.

Let's agree to disagree

*holds open arms for a hug*

Mono have the better artwork and they have had an album recorded by Steve Albini (the defining mark of quality).

but albini

ruins any 'post-rock' band he works with. the production is dreadful.

before I charge in once more

you are kidding right?
You've heard 'yanqui uxo'?

i think so

just underneath the cymbals and amplifier distortion

it's not really an invented language

and i'm sure i've seen about a million interviews with them where jónsi just looks embarrased as if to say "oh christ, this language thing again".
it isn't a language, just random noises made by his voice. using the singer as another instrument.

and i'd say start with Ágætis... although i'm still a firm believer in Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do as an absolutely fantastic piece of work.

you should see heima too

the music and the film itself are beautiful

Good Point

Having seen this I think the film is the way to go as it has a mixture of the three later albums and Icelandic landscape looks gorgeous.

start with agaetis

von isnt too good.
its best to listen to the songs on the first album after they'd been reworked. (von, hafsol etc.)
listen to ( ) last, it's probably their least accessible.
takk is a complete master-stroke though.
it forced me to get my one and only tattoo.
everything about the album is perfect.
simple.

good thread

for a band that only has 4 albums that anyone knows.

().
agaetis byrjun.
().
takk.
().
agaetis byrjun.

no one should say von for a reason, and ba ba ti ki di do sucked as well.

ba ba ti ki di do

didnt suck, its awesome if you like philip glass etc.

Angels of the universe was not too good.

The Hlemmur Soundtrack is excellent mind.

oh, and ba ba isnt an album

its an EP

yeah and it certainly does not suck!

its brilliant.

my answer to the orginal question would have to be ()
