I've been browsing Gumtree and other questionable websites for places to live in London. Surprisingly, some of it seems quite affordable. Unfortunately, i know sod all about the place, so could do with some pointers. I guess i need to know what the standout places are for good gigs, venues, general things to do etc, and then perhaps get a few names of areas to stay that are cheap enough, safe, decent generally and would enable me to get out to decent places without having to spend ages on public transport. I guess my budget would be £200-£320 a month, although i'm not sure if that's realistic. I don't really have any clue where or what North, South, East, West or Central London are, so if someone could give me a clue, and also maybe let me know of places i should definitely avoid. If you perhaps know of other websites for roomshares/cheap flats, and know of where i might start looking for work (generally unskilled, yawn!), that'd be grand.
I can't really help you but....
I've heard quite a few times on here that the minimum per annum income you can live on in London is about £18k.
I'm not sure about that.
The rooms i'm looking at don't seem that expensive, cheaper than Manchester in most cases. Obviously the cost of living will be slightly higher, but i'm sure there are people on here who live in London that don't earn £18k. I expect that figure might be for someone renting a flat, i'm probably only looking at a room.
east london is
where it's at. and its pretty cheap too. i live in bethnal green, its great. loads going on and well connected to everywhere.
stay away from south of the river..
and gumtree is
prob the best place to look for a flat share.
actually i find
moveflat.co.uk has a lot less dickheads and racists than gumtree.
ignore the south haters
transpontine is the only way to go
though if you move to greenwich
noone will hang out with you because you're "too far away". true fact.
until you get to summer
when greenwich becomes pretty much the nicest part of london to spend time in.
i think it was even in january!
apart from the pubs. the pubs were shite.
*expensive
oh no
i meant because the of the whole massive park / riverside location thing. and the fact that you can get to take the DLR to get there.
"get to"???
"GET TO"???????? that thing is a horror ride. i refuse to get on it unless piss drunk.
I love the DLR!
Am confused.
Front seat of DLR train > Top deck of bus > single seat at front of bendy bus > boring tube
Haha
Bethnal Green getting sniffy about South London? Hmmm...
Could you give me the names of some areaas to look at?
I've found nice-enough looking places in East Ham, Stratford, Hackney, Hendon, Archway, Stepney & Shepherds Bush. Could you tell me what any of those are like, roughly??
bits of all of them are fine, bits are not
that's how it works. It may not be helpful, but you need to see the places to really find out - see the streets around etc.
ah stepney is fabulous :)
really safe too. and quite a close walk into town.
"east london is where it's at"
http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com/2008/02/22/73-gentrification/
i think it was Canning Town
that i asked about on here and was told that it was crazy-dangerous. i'd asked because the rent had been so cheap.
oi! you up there! guntrip!
was it canning town i'd asked about? was it was it was it???
yes
it was.
.
i know almost nothing about london but i know a few people that live in camberwell very cheaply and have quite decent places. and camberwell is great and easy to get to.
camberwell is great

ahaha
i want the top... oh wait..
my opinion
live north/ northwest( not too north tho.)
NOT southeast
AVOID.. finsbury park, kilburn, kennington, lewisham, eltham, willesden, harlesden, stratford...
kennington is brilliant to live in
the only problem is how expensive it is
fair enough
like i said, this is my opinion.. and you know what londons like, for every person that dislikes an area another raves about it :)
true
I'd agree with every other place you listed. Anyway, it's to be hoped that no-one moving to London thinks "Hey, I've been hearing great things about Eltham lately"...
dodgy estate agent..
anyway, i love my place. its 10 min wlk to camden, 10 to Angel, 15 to tottenham ct rd, 20 to oxford street.. i deal. and the BEST tube links :D
do you live in king's cross?
yup
why would anybody
want to live in north west London? I literally can't think of any reason.
really?
chalk farm
hardly counts!
i would think he's more referring to places out willesden way.
oh i see
i dont think in 'suburbs' :D
I wouldn't have classed
chalk farm as north west really. It's pretty much north central.
I have a mortal fear of anywhere west of Camden, deriving from a totally miserable year living near Paddington.
All my friends and everything I ever do is in the East and it was just that little bit too difficult to get to.
no way dude
EVERYone is moving to finsbury park these days.
why, has rape become fashionable?
^^^this!
i went to college up there.. Freaks me right out after dark!
id feel safer pretty much ANYWHERE
???
maybe cause it's hotttttttt
I live in New Cross
(SE London) and pay £286 p/month. This is unusually cheap but flatshares of around that price do come up from time to time. As it's a student area you would prob have to live with students in order to pay that little. As you are a non student this could be problematic in terms of council tax but there are ways around this ;).
New Cross as an area is a bit crappy but has a good studenty feel to it and there are plenty of bands and clubnights going on. It's also about 25 mins to London Bridge by bus or 7 mins by train.
Generally your best bet is to stay glued to gumtree and see what turns up.
what's wrong with north west london?
it's not far from places at all and is cheap.
it doesn't have as much Real Culture and Urban Gritt
as bethnal green, obvs.
it is far from places
it's like being in Ireland or something.
it really isn't...
although you did say most of what you do is situated east, which i can understand, but wembley park tube - baker st is about 12 minutes or something.
also kilburn has the good ship, luminaire and tricycle!
and wembley has
a dim sum restaurant where the chef has two michelin stars! i like NW london.
north or north-east or East London
is the best connected part and allows you convenient access to the most gigs and things. I'd be looking particularly at Islington (though pricey) and the West side of Hackney (Stoke Newington/Dalston) which is fun and reasonably priced.
I'd avoid North West London (not connected as well, pretty boring and devoid of venues). West London (properly boring and expensive), South West London (even more boring and full of men wearing boater shoes). South and South East (e.g. Brixton, New Cross etc.) can be quite good but are slightly isolated so a bit of a braver choice.
The largest proportion of the good stuff in London happens in North, North-East or East (central East though e.g. Bethnal Green or Whitechapel).
brixton is in no way isolated
esp in comparison to Dalston
where is worth going to that is a few minutes from Brixton?
Clapham?!
As opposed to e.g. Dalston which has the whole stretch of Kingsland Road, Old St, Highbury and Islington and Angel within a 10 minute bus journey or a walk.
personal preference, but those are all places I try to avoid
and Brixton is its own reward!
dalston
i live just near shacklewell lane and am totally happy with the location. i pretty much echo the above. my rent isn't totally cheap - £400 a month in a 3 bedroom flat. but we are *just* behind stoke newington road.
kingsland road
is horrific.
do you mean kingsland road or kingsland high street?
and why?
kingsland road
is terrific
i personally love east london
and rarely go to other parts of the city. all the best bars, gigs, etc are here
I've lived in South London
Since I moved here five years ago.
I've survived on £6.50 an hour, which works out less than 18k a year, and have felt relativly safe in Clapham, Streatham Hill, Earls Court, Kennington, Southfields, and I've paid no more than £85 a week inclusive since I moved to London.
I guess East London is good, but I'm not trendy enough to live in such a place.
You won't get hardly ANYWHERE for 200 quid a month- unless it's in Croydon, Lewisham, or Elephant and Castle area....spend a bit more and live in a nicer area.
Brixton constantly gets a bad reputation- mainly to do with white middle class indie kids, rather than mugging and knifes being used everyday.
Good luck.
ps my mate got mugged two months ago in Richmond by gun point so crime is everywhereeeeeeeeeee
i came across
afew places bethnal green/stepney way that were around £80 per week and i've never had any problems in three years of being here - seems to be a stigma attached to certain places.
i have afew friends dalston/stoke newington way, that might be worth a try too?
You've got to arrange to stay down here and have a wander
Seriously, find someone to put you up and take a weeks holiday. Go on walks to see where you feel comfortable, then ignore what everyone else says, especially about crime. I was mugged twice within a year in a supposedly 'nice' area of South West London. Then I moved to Wood Green, which is near Finsbury, and came across no crime at all. I know many people who LOVE New Cross, despite everything thats said about in, equally I can understand why people would want to live in West London because it's quiet and pretty and you don't have to be at the centre of the action all the time.
A lot of the properties advertised on Gumtree are owned by very dubious types, again it's hard to know this without meeting them. Lots of detail in an ad is a good sign.
