There is something in my pants. It is a massive hard on for this band. They got it all: Passages of sparse, increasingly claustrophobic noise interspersed with reams of bludgeoning violence, melancholic doom and tinkling cinematic beauty. And then (Youthmovies take note) just when you thought "Okay, this two guitars, bass and drums shit is okay for norms, but what else can these guys do?", they introduce stunning turns from violinists, trumpeters and woodwind...ers who actually know where their place is within the dynamic of a band and who provide something with a little more textual depth than simply replicating a half-assed guitar or vocal line.
Who has me up high, for cherry pie?

Yep they're ace
I still prefer Maudlin of the Well though (their previous band). They were kind of proggy pastoral folk with death metal bits. As terrible as that sounds they made it work.
Kayo Dot do seem to be doing a bit better at getting an audience though so that is good because I think MotW were pretty unloved.
...
Ah, Tim mentioned them a couple of months back and described them the exact same way. I never made the connection though. I'll be listening again.
I didn't know he liked them
they are very much an acquired taste I'd say but there are big similarities. They are more low-key than Kayo Dot though and less metal.
Easily one of my favourite bands.
Dowsing is one of my favourite records and Choirs aint half bad either. Definitely an improvement on motW, there was too much cheese-metal in that band.
Blue Lambency Downward is supposed to come out May 6 on Hydrahead and I cannot fuckin wait.
hurrah
:D
Kayo Dot
are fucking amazing, youre absolutely right.
Incredible band
Would be amazing if they toured the new one over here.
...
If they had a proper big band, that would indeed be something special.
The main guy
sacked everyone last year, didn't he? I read it somewhere but can't remember where exactly.
He basically writes the songs with one other guy in the band, then when they want to tour some new material a bit they get lots of hired hands to play the various parts.
He didn't fire them as such.
Some of them quit, but he has to hire different people every time because the instrumentation changes so much. It's basically Toby and Mia, the main guy and the violinist, and everyone else is hired. I think.
New stuff supposedly has a lot of keyboards and they dont play any of the old stuff anymore.
You never post a link to the bands you mention,
so I'm going to disagree for the sake of it.
...
You're supposed to be cool enough to already know about the band and therefore agree.
[sigh] http://www.myspace.com/kayodot
Listening now.
Very trippy indeed.
In regards
to the original post, I couldn't have summed it up any better. I can't think of any other band that have excited me quite as much in the last few years.
I prefer them to Maudlin Of the Well though - as good as they were, I feel the death metal aspects dominate too much sometimes which is the weakest aspect of the band, whereas Kayo Dot refined the sound to have a better use of atmosphere, space and multi-instrumentation.
Toby Driver's "solo" album and the Tarter Lamb album are both pretty awesome and worth checking out if you like the more atmospheric end of Kayo Dot.
Tartar Lamb
...in fact
F'yangh
Incredible band, I love how they move from sparse meditative passages into great cacophonous swells of noise. High hopes for the new album, although I read somewhere that it was going to devoid of the more abrasive elements of their prior recordings. Should be interesting.
Great band!
Found Dowsing... while still a good album, a bit disappointing compared with the elemental force of Choirs... Be eager to hear the new one when it's released too.
Bit more of a fan of MoTW though, who are great nightime listening. My Fruit Psychobells is ace album.
Anyone heard any of Driver's Spoonion material? Interesting as a curiosity and always good to hear sped up vocals.
I'll give you a two-day-late high five
I'm listening to them on myspace now, and can't fault your description. They've spent ages on my list marked "Bands on Holy Roar who are likely to rule and who I should get round to checking out". They're now on the list marked "Bands who rule".
They're playing a bunch of European dates, but nothing UK announced yet. Fingers crossed.
Too damn right
fingers crossed. If they tour Europe and can't even make it to London I will be severely disappointed.
Mia's page looks to have
a more comprehensive tour schedule. I guess June 2nd is confirmed for a country yet. A small UK tour of tiny venues tacked on the end would be outstanding.
I think the europe dates
are supporting Gregor Samsa. If they dont play the UK I'll die.
Is it wrong...
to be seriously entertaining the idea of going to Europe to see them if they don't come to the UK? I mean, how easy is it to jump on the Eurostar to Paris for the night...
Basically, that's how much I love this band. (As I sit typing this wearing my Kayo Dot t-shirt!)
I'm in the very same boat.
It's bad enough that we'll never hear any Choirs or Dowsing material over here, let alone the thought of not seeing em.
i did it
for the twilight sad, though i disguised it as a holiday with my girlfriend.
its very easy, and cheap.
Interesting.
Will re-visit.
The first track on their MySpace is REALLY offputting though.
Okay.
I like. But I do hate it when you are right. I really do.
As
awesome as Kayo Dot are, you can't start a music review with the phrase "There's something in my pants".
It's just horrible.
...
...but there's always something in my pants.
True.
Point retracted.
Sweet Cherry Pie
This sounds pretty darn good
Like
the early ninetees cock rock song?
:)
She's my cherry pie
Cool drink of water
Such a sweet surprise
Tastes so good
Make a grown man cry
Sweet Cherry Pie
Yeah
Wow
Heh Heh
Well swinging on the front porch
Swinging on the lawn
Swinging where we want
Cause there ain't nobody home
Swingin' to the left and
Swingin' to the right
I think about baseball
I'll swing all night, yeah
Yeah, yeah - huh!
Swingin in the living room
Swingin' in the kitchen
Most folks don't
Cause they're too busy bitchin'
Swingin' in there
Cause she wanted me to feed her
So I mixed up the batter
And she licked the beater
I scream, you scream,
We all scream for her
Don't even try
Cause you can't ignore her
CHORUS
She's my cherry pie
Cool drink of water
Such a sweet surprise
Tastes so good make a grown man cry
Sweet cherry pie
Oh yeah
She's my cherry pie
Put a smile on your face
Ten miles wide
Looks so good
Bring a tear to your eye
Sweet cherry pie
Yeah sweet cherry pie
Yeah
Swingin to the drums
Swingin to guitar
Swingin to the bass in the back of my car
Ain't got no money, ain't got no gas
Get where were goin if we swing real fast
I scream, you scream,
We all scream for her
Don't even try
Cause you can't ignore her
She's my cherry pie
Cool drink of water
Such a sweet surprise
Tastes so good make a grown man cry
Sweet cherry pie
Oh yeah
She's my cherry pie
Put a smile on your face
Ten miles wide
Looks so good
Bring a tear to your eye
Sweet cherry pie
Yeah sweet cherry pie
Yeah
Swing it
All night long
Swing it
Hey, hey, Ow!
I'm a trained professional
Swingin' in the bathroom
Swingin' on the floor
Swingin' so hard
Forgot to lock the door
In walks her daddy
Standin' six foot four
Said, "You ain't gonna swing
with my daughter no more."
CHORUS
Sweet Cherry Pie
Yeah! Huh!
Swing it!
I felt dirty
just copying and pasting it
great band
the main two (toby and mia) contribute to the new Gregor Samsa album, and i think some of Gregor Samsa help out with Kayo Dot.
They look to be
trying to play UK dates in November!
Someone book them!
what is your source...
..please?
November?
Shit.
So the debate about whether to go to Paris now begins. It is a bank holiday monday after all.
my source being their myspace page
But
it says they HOPE to play, it doesnt sound like they have any dates or actual shows in mind. People seriously need to book these guys.
The new album
is up for the streaming at www.bluelambencydownward.com, for those who are interested. It's got more of a Jazz/70s King Crimson vibe about it, no doom/metal this time around.
I also highly reccommend Time Of Orchids if you like the Dot
Yeah
Definite ToO and RIO vibes from the new album. I've played it 3 or 4 times and none of it has really sunk in.
I've just got into them
Fucking awesome band. Mia is gorgeous too!
