Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

i decreed long ago that the futureheads should be 'post-barbershop'.

never took though. bastards.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

A lot of people use 'barbersho' when discussing TV On The Radio.

I hate the genre name Intelligent Dance Music.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

i quite dislike 'dance' overall, really. Bit too vague. Surely all music is dance music?

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

well not all... try dancing to faure's requiem. not everything's designed to be danced to. but yeah, before i go getting all traynor on your arse, fair point. plus it means that a lot of good music gets creatively dismissed on account of being 'dance music', i.e. part of a subculture that narrow-minded people aren't prepared to dip their toes into.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

you can dance very slowly to Requiem, non?
Like you can dance twitchingly to...ugh..."IDM".

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

i suppose if you moved v-e-e-e-e-r-r-r-y-y-y s-s-s-l-l-o-w-w-w-w-l-l-y-y-y-y-y-y.

But it would look a bit silly.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

Shoegazer is the only one the makes sense to me. And it doesn't really make that much sense. But I like it all the same.

I have never heard of 'gabba'. Is that music that sounds like the Ramones?

The worst is 'emo'. As if the bands like Taking Back Sunday, Relient K, Hawthorne Heights, My Chemical Romance, Yellowcard, etc etc. are ee-mooo-tion-al. I think my biggest complaint about these bands is that they all sound exactly alike. Not a little bit. Exactly alike. Weird. Ought to be called Samo.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

oh and 'indie'...for similar reasons as 'emo' really in how it's become bands that sound similar rather than bands who separated themselves and sounded 'independent'/worked 'independently'. Plus they look/sound a bit rubbish.

Grime, now there's a genre name...

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

shoegaze is a bit lame, but at least it's not as bad as 'dream-pop' which is what the american music press labelled it.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

GOD i hate the term urban. such a fucking politically correct, lazy, meaningless use of the word. if it's soul, say so. if it's rap/hip-hop/hip-pop/two-step/crunk/grime/r'n'b/vaguely-r'n'b-or-dance-influenced-pop/whatever else gets consistently lumped under this distinctly holey umbrella... fucken say so. gah.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

noisecore and artrock
*shakes fist*

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

Classical! HAHAHAHAHAHAH! Oh, when will they learn.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

I like names that randomly add "tronica" at the end. i.e. folktronica, emotronica... and 'glitch-hop' = great, although that is basically just prefuse 73.

IDM is clearly the most stupid name ever, I think I'll be the judge of whether it's intelligent or not. And that's like saying that other "dance" music is just STOOPID or something.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

Emo-Hop! Eminem's Mockingbird is the best example.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

Yeah, eminem's new stuff is emo-hop for sure.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

p.s. that's quite funny actually, I thought I was the only one who called it that.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

You may have made it up, I heard it somewhere here.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

the absolute worst are garage and R and B, in the modern senses, because they were already genres.....

and don't you think Rhythm and Blues is so much more appropriate to Howlin' Wolf rather than some modern shitbag girl group

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

I've never really understood exactly what Math Rock is - can anyone define it? I'm quite fond of the addition of -core to the end of something to mix and match your own genres - metalcore / indiecore / jazzcore etc etc...

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

I think it's something to do with time signitures- 'okay lads, theres an intro of three and a half bars in 5/4, half a bar of 6/8, then a bar of 7/8....etc etc'

I preferred the good 'ol days when everything from James Last to Mrs Mills was 'popular'

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

Why yes, yes I do.

My favourite shite genre names:

New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). Catchy!
New Wave of New Wave. Clever!
Alt rock/alt country. So alternative they've abbreviated the alternative!
Crunk. WTF?

My favourite favourites:

Drill and bass
Grunge

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

I read someone using the term Post-Hop once, just no. Pitchfork seem to be using 'Lap-Pop' alot recently, which is actually a pretty good genre name.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

The term 'gabba' originates with the dock workers in Rotterdam, and means 'friend'. This is where the music started.

Someday everyone will listen to gabba...when I ruuule the worrrld...HAHAHAH er sorry.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

for the worst they can only be winner

and that is a sub-genre of punk under the name of Oi

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

for the worst they can only be one winner

and that is a sub-genre of punk under the name of Oi
what it actually is, i have no idea, but still terrible genre name

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

The RIOT-GRRRRL movement was the best for once it seemed as though the male dominated 'music-industry' was shit-scared. We need it back fucking badly. There is currently a fucking retarded regression going on where mostly male dominated bands mean fuck all to us looking for positive, female role-models.Meg and her sexy accomplice Jack are about the only 'role-models' left.

Hey, i didn't know you had to have prick and bollocks, and a brain the size of a pea just to play the drums! and the electric guitar for that matter.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

People who know where its at always will and always have listened to brilliant music made by women, without needing to have it rammed down their throats by any kind of movement though........

Some of my favourite musicians/writers are women- margo guryan, vashti bunyan, shirley collins, kate bush, judee sill, delia derbyshire, Barbara Manning etc, but that whole riot grrrl stuff just annoys me-. Sure you don't need to HAVE a prick and bollocks, but that doesn't mean you have to BE a prick and bollocks etc...etc...etc...

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

They're all shite and I try to avoid them wherever possible.

Math Rock, I fuckin ask you!

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

Good
Drum and Plaice
Had-Rock

Bad
Shark Metal
Tuna-Pop

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

Alko-pop! Ace. We used to describe my old band as Electro-Grindcore. Casio-core!

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

Hippy Hop and things with Core or Tronica on the end. I like anything that mashes several genre's into one because it points to more intresting music.

i have a deep personal hatred of the term punk-pop. and i also have objections to 'rock/indie' (usually meaning foo fighters/feeder/idlewild bleeeeurgh) and 'r'nb' as used to describe black chart pop.

Re: Best/Worst Genre Names

There was a band called Alcopop some years ago, if i remember correctly.
