is crap. My first and biggest thought on it is "indie ripoff of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band", especially for the first half. I would normally give it a second listen before passing this sort of judgement, but I can't bear to hear it again. Discuss.

spot on

its a big overrated pile of poo

Listen to it a few more times

if that doesn't work go and see them live. Their excitement is infectious.

But

their sound is shit. And they're not very dynamic.

Fair enough

But in my opinion it's the best album Bruce never made yet.

I love it, from the opening line onwards.

Ditto

.

It is Springsteen-esque yes,

but why hold that against it?

It's a lovely album.

my problem with it isn't that it's Springsteen-esque

It's how Springsteen-esque it is. And Springsteen-esque but not near as good, and I say that not even being a fan of Springsteen.

Fair point.

I've not heard that much Springsteen to properly comment.

I like the first two songs

Even though some of the lyrics are a bit sickly. The rest, meh.

Love this album very very much indeed

Seen them live too, marvelous. :D

i think

this might be one of my favourite albums of all time. I've never heard anything quite as exuberant, exciting, poignant or downright poetic. It's incredible from start to finish.

In short, you're so, so wrong.

see, i got that it

was lame and second-rate and boring. Mainly because it sounds so much like Springsteen (like something I've already heard), but worse in every way. Less exciting and less poetic.

^ this

The Hold Steady aren't even fit to wipe Springsteen's arse.

i adore bruce springsteen

and i adore the hold steady. i think that, yes, they are heavily influenced by him - especially circa 'the wild, the innocent and the e street shuffle' - but i don't see it as a rip-off, at all. in comparison with other current bands/artists who are so clearly ripping off other bands/artists better than themselves, you can definitely see it's nothing but lovingly influenced. the hold steady are far too clever in their own right to rip off someone like springsteen. but you say you're not even a fan of springsteen, so...

i think 'boys & girls in america' is a fantastic album and my favourite of the previous year. in fact, it's already ending up one of my all time favourites.

i'm well familiar with his and their stuff though

as my mom's a huuuuge Springsteen and the E Street Band fan. So I've heard it plenty.

I'm not saying they've consciously tried to rip them off, but they have. I mean even lyrically, the album makes me think of a cover band that's tried to write their own lyrics. Like the whole of Southtown Girls feels to me like just the "you ain't pretty but hey, you're alright" sentiment stretched out into five minutes, give or take a little small-town yearning.

^

Completely agree with this. I'm a big fan of Springstreen and The Hold Steady, and love the fact that they're are so obviously influenced by him. But they really hold their own. Live they are a joy to watch, with Craig Finn spitting ever word so passionately. And so he should, as he writes some of the best lyrics out there today. They may not be overtly "deep" or immediately original, but he can construct and create a story through a song so well with his lyrics, in a way that seems to be sorely lacking in music today.

That's right, I'm a fan of Springstreen...

Not The Boss himself.

i cant really bring myself to listen to more than

about 30 seconds of any hold steady songs.

unhelpful contribution? probably,hmmm.

The Hold Steady

are fucking awesome, especially live. Fact.

Their first album, Almost killed me, is as good, if not better than Boys and Girls in America. And it sounds nothing like Springsteen (even if it does namecheck Born to Run).

If the new album is as good as either of those two, I'll be happy.

I think it's great

Was one of my favourite albums of 2006. Especially love Chips Ahoy and Chillout Tent.

Hope the new one is as good as the previous three.

Don't overly care about Springsteen,

But I've never had as big a change of heart towards a record as I did with Boys and Girls...

I bought it as an import way before it got put out properly over here because it was getting way hyped. I thought it was cheesy, sickly, pompous, overplayed bullshit and promised myself never to listen to it again. Then when it got released properly over here I went back on my promise and put it on one last time whilst drunk, just to check it was still terrible. I'm sure you can see where this hyperbole is going to end.

Get drunk and go and see them play. It's not life changing but you'll doubtless have an incredible time.

who cares

if alley doesn't like them and why waste the time trying to convince her?

She's spent more time on this post writing why she doesn't like them than she has actually listening to the band.

The whole world doesn't revolve around her, does it ?

i spent like 5 seconds on that post

and it's a music forum, largely intended for discussing music.

i know

and i'm discussing the futility of trying to get someone to like something when they have already made their mind up.

so much is wrong with that

what would even be the point of discussion if i was already stubbornly consigned to one view? why would i bother starting a thread? and what would be the point of this forum if really, none of us are willing to listen to other people's views? i just described my initial reaction and how i'm feeling about the album at the moment. and already, by the way, the discussion has me hoping to manage another listen.

well...

it's good to hear you may give them another listen.

I'm baffled though that it's taken a message board for you to realise that may be a good idea, but maybe that's just me.

I guarantee you that if message boards such as this fill up with "i like this", "well i don't" conversations then they will cease to exist.

that's what i'm saying

i wasn't looking for an "i like this" , "well i don't" thread. also, i wouldn't likely have gone for a second listen because i feel averse to the idea; so yeah, having people say they felt the same way at first but changed their minds after repeated listens is what nudged me toward that in this case. i'm not fucking daft; normally i would give an album a second listen, no debate about it. i just really disliked this one and struggled to even bother finishing it the first time.

They're incredibly fun live

even though their albums aren't as good as some people make them out to be.

it's good

just without being tiresome, cerebral or particularly cool to like.

just

just fucking enjoy it you miserable bastard, listening to chips ahoy and enjoying its pop drive made me happy, i didnt feel ANY need to run to my cd collection and start intellectualising the experience, and when the initial rush went and i wanted to intellectualise the experience, i found the record to be well put together and orginial.

yeah, what i'm saying is

my initial rush was a bad one and afterwards, when "intellectualizing" it, this is what i thought. some people have different taste from yours, get over it.

if bands couldn't exist

with a modicum of pastiche i can't imagine there would be many left...the fact is the hold steady have released three masterpiece albums in a row and that is to be commended...i can understand if some people find the style of writing annoying with the same characters appearing between songs, or even across albums, but i love it

My first and biggest thought on this post is:

you are incredibly wrong, and its a brilliant album, and The Hold Steady are an amazing band. Even though yes they do sound a bit like Bruce Springsteen. But they also sound BETTER than Bruce Springsteen, because Bruce Springsteen is a Rock Star with big fat capital letters, and Craig Finn is really just a drunken and slightly too old guy who probably shouldn't be so interested in under-age drinking. Also, they have better songs.

They

have better songs than Bruce Springsteen? Ahahahahahahahahaha!

-

there's a reason he's got that reputation in the first place. and you're being a bit of a snob in assuming that's why we think he's better

Yeah but

I reserve the right to be a snob in the face of an overexagerrated: "Ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!" internet guffaw.

You! It's your fault I listened to this sooner rather than later in the first place!

(SAFETYWINK, for those who don't understand I'm not actually upset with him. It's a joke.)

- They sound a lot like Bruce Springsteen. Or at least a lot more than a bit.

- Him being more loserly (WINK AGAIN!) doesn't make it *sound* better, it still sounds worse.

- No they don't.

But then I'm going to listen to it again if I can manage. So I might end up not thinking it's crap. However, I'm betting I still won't think it can touch Bruce Springsteen.

- Its not just that he's more 'loserly'

its also that he sings about middle-class debauchery more than working-class struggles (much more fun!- and relatable too)

- The songs thing is pretty subjective I'll grant you- 'Atlantic City' and 'Born To Run' are obvs pretty amazing but I still prefer 'Stuck Between Stations' and 'Chips Ahoy'.

Fuck that,

middle class debauchery is BORING. Also, to each his or her own; personally, though I grew up amongst middle-classers, I can relate more to the working class feelings as that's my family's culture.

Anyway, I'm not looking to argue who's best overall, as in that regard I *am* firmly set. I was just looking to hear people's views on the album not being total crap.

*my view

I think this thread was just one big calculated cry for attention.

Pah

I can look away from my reflection in some water. Just watch me.
