404: Concept not found.
Electro
Does not have great albums, only incredible singles. Most pre 1993 or so electro is absolutely incredible though.
Holden 'Idiots Are Winning'
Pantha Du Prince 'This Bliss'
Radiohead - Kid A
woo electro yeah!
MGMT
is hardly electro but has silly synth noises, it might count.
Otherwise, get Myth Takes.
Maybe Electronic....
Im a noobie in music i just like it if it sounds good
Electro
is much more hip hop orientated than electronic music. It has only the beats, funk and hip hop and is completely different to electronic style music.
Ugh.
You're right. What would you say !!! is?
thats rubbish
electo comprises of so many forms, its not all hip hop and funk
Now I know next to nothing
But I'm pretty sure neither of those are electro.
Electro One by Streetsounds
for a cassic old school style.
e.g. stuff like this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8049vHNO11I
arse I was looking for the original
ahh well
I say Afrika Bambaataa sums up electro well;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9h6pcqC6wrI
oh yeah he is wicked
that tune is just a classic still sunds amazing
Al naafiysh By Hashim from 1983
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku55YLD_Rdk
love this tune
a list of artists/labels
vitalic
soulwax (nite sessions)
miss kittin
felix da housecat
alter ego
justice
ktisune maison and dfa mixes are good too
I agree with those
but if your after some darker stuff grab some Dave Clark World Service mix CD's one disc techno one side electro the first one had radiohead on it and some real beasts
Yes,
the Dave Clarke World Service CDs are amazing.
It's worth tracking down the original Streetsounds series for old school electro, some incredible music. Quite hard to find now, but you can pick up some tracks from compilations. It's more single than album orientated though
just looked dave clarke up
and 1 is not for sale... anyone know where to get or have a link?
I'm no help sorry
I got that one years ago, maybe 7 years I dunno. Ebay?
Good call on Felix/Kittin and Kitsune.
To original poster: Really, it depends what sort of electro you're after, natch. Most people on here seem to have recommended the slicker stuff, whereas I tend to favour the "made entirely on a Casio keyboard and produced for five pence approach", as demonstrated very well by Gravy Train!!!!.
A lot of people dismiss electroclash as being passe. Ignore them, they're missing out on some delicious stuff. Ladytron, Peaches and Fischerspooner still get people making shapes now, and rightly so.
if this counts....
i'll go with:
Air - Moon Safari.
^
i'd say that's electroninca.. to light for electro (good album of course) :)
^
"electronica" wouldn't be very descriptive though, would it?
i guess you'd call diverse acts as bogdan raczynski, autechre, global goon, ed dmx and mouse on mars "electronica", but they sure don't have much in common with moon safari.
"electronica" is what "indie" has become; you know, anything is "indie".
^
aye... genre names are a pain :)
Cybotron?

Huski
Love Peace Pain
Genius.

Vitalic - OK Cowboy
There is a subtle electro-pop/electro/electro-house/electronica spectrum though which leads to debates about what's what and what should be in each genre. Of course we could just listen to music rather than get into semantical debates, but luckily for us with verbal diarrorhea, and bad spelling, that ain't never going to happen, when is this sentence going to end?
just saw Vitalic
on Saturday... was great!!! prefer him at festis tho - type of music that goes well with a few thousand jumping people :)
ah, am jealous! I wanted to see him in Dublin on Sun night
but we kind of killered ourselves from the three previous nights and had flight back to London at stupid o clock.
Meh me.
hey there RK
i did keep an eye out for ya at SE1 on thurs. :)
Ahhh
I love this album so much. He better hurry up with a new one though!
^This

*Bright Like Neon Love
YES DMX KREW!!!

Chromeo
Hot Chip's DJ Kicks album
Diplo

...
shinichi osawa - the one
is a great album, quite varied, and starts with a cracking cover of star guitar.
id also recommend the danger ep and the bugged out boyz noise suck my deck mix which is quite 2manydjs and had a load of great tunes and and very well mixed too
modeselektor
both their albums are great.
^ trudat
My Mixes are Electro

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WHEB7P7O
i'll get around to a webpage soon to post them all up (this is my 5th)
That sounds pretty mainstream electro
But definitely my sort of thing.
Link
is here - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WHEB7P7O
(not obvious above)
The download keeps cancelling itself
When my internet momentarily disconnects and then reconnects for a while. I'll download it another time (I saved the link in my bookmarks).
I'm nabbing that!
Cheers.
Only mainstream as far as electro goes, though.
With the exception of NYPC/SMD/LCD/Hot Chip/Chemical Brothers, I don't recall any of the others making it big.
Inhabiting DiS does have the curious effect of making one lose perspective of what "mainstream" actually is, mind you...
^
I think saying this is mainstream is a bit harsh... it is the most accessible mix i've done tho...
do let me know your thoughts all - I can it :)
^
i can TAKE it i meant :)
Luke Slater
- Alright on top
^^^^^^^^^
Holy shit yes, this is a great album. Vocals by him out of The Aloof if anyone's mind stretches back that far.
His mixes are well worth checking out as well.
Luke Slater's Fabric Mix
Currently £3 in Fopp, bargain fans
i would say
the knife - silent shout. a fucking tremendous album
Fischerspooner - #1
newbuild
newbuild by 808 state, certainly electronic, whether its electro i dont know, but what i do know is that its a classic.
Tiga!
Great Thread.
I think there's a lot of confusion
between 'electro' and 'electronica' here.
Not that I'm a genre facist, just sayin'. Also, two of these below are almost certainly more techno and hiphop then electro but WHO CARES EH:
Aux 88 - electro boogie
Drexciya - the quest
DMX Krew - we are DMX
Mantronix - the album
Also check out Cybotron and Model 500
Try these lists
http://www.thesilentballet.com/tsbt/2007/top_25.html
http://thesilentballet.com/dnn/Reviews/tabid/54/ctl/Details/mid/438/ItemID/246/Default.aspx
Loads of good stuff on those lists.
It's all about Booka Shade though.
Defo
Booka Shade
Felix's Kittenz and the Glitz is a pretty seminal work....
Peaches, of course. Maybe Chicks on Speed too?
oh and
bits of Neon Neon! :)
SMD attack decay susstain release
it's pretty funky, listening to it at the mo actually, so there
Sorry purists
If I've got this all wrong (I'm just a small town girl in an affa big city) BUT
Start here:
Tiga - You're gonna want me
Then:
Justice - Cross OR SMD - Attack Decay Sustain Release
Then: Maybe have a rummage around some Kitsune stuff
Then for some old stuff:
Cabaret Voltaire (but not the 90s stuff - it's pap).
Then:
Have a lie down
It's just a wee suggestion, I don't profess to be an electro/electronica expert, more of an electrician really
Digitalism - Idealism
Obvious really.
not all strictly 'electro'
felix da housecat - kittenz and thee glitz
felix da housecat - devin dazzle and the neon fever
vitalic - ok cowboy
ellen allien/ apparat - orchestra of bubbles
gui boratto - chromophobia
for 2001-3 electro compilations Futurism #1 and #2 both very good
Gui Boratto
good shout.
And...
anything on Kompakt, really...
Bleepy whooshy minimal stuff, though, largely. Electronic, if not electro..
.
whatever the toktok vs. soffy o album was called, also
Tripper
by Efterklang. Its combines super electronic glitchiness with bleakly beautiful melodies.
Most of the stuff mentioned in this thread isn't electro.
^
Explain?
Or are you just going to be all smug?
I think most people have pointed out that its not "strictly electro". But really, who gives a crap eh.
ok..
It's like someone asking for metal or post rock reccomendations, and then people just listing any album with a guitar on.
Any
Proper Electro recommendations, then?
Jonzun crew
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=WdRs97fIiHg
I don't really listen to electro now
I don't know if you can download the Streetsounds compilations anywhere.
Try Cybotron, Mantronix, Drexciya (old stuff).
For something more recent DMX on Rephlex.
Hey! You stole my
recommendations!
Ha!
Sorry, it wasn't intentional. I see now that other people had recommended Streetsounds as well. Oh well, at least we're in agreement.
most of it's not remotely electro though is it
I mean, Efterklang and Air? They're about as electro as fucking R.E.M.
It's silly to get too caught up in electronic music genres because there's so much crossover - but some people seem to be listing any album they like that's not bog standard indie rock and might have been made with a synth or computer.
Genres
I'd be surprised if the original request was for pure/genuine/authentic electro.
Could be wrong, though.
^ agreed
smugness can fuck off
The dudonio asking the advice said:
"Maybe Electronic...."
oh..
I didn't see the MGMT reply was from the original poster. Apologies. Carry on...
Oh yeah
Kissy Sell Out good new electro-ish bloke. Not sure if he's released much more than singles though...
Remixes mainly
but a couple of his own decnet 12", same as Felix Cartal, who's probably the better of the two.
Felix Cartal
Hadn't heard but investigating now. Good call, by the sounds of it...
Maybe
The Knife's first album? The second was more electronic than electr though.
Isolee? Or is that micro-house or whatever the feck you call it.
