im finding it harder and harder these days to believe that any band is going to come along and save rock. i think the halcyon days are long gone. songcraft is a relic of a bygone era. we are moving into a strange world full of collaboration and computer made sound. its not good. plus since downloading is making it harder and harder for new bands to break in, have we missed the boat? were not gonna get another daydream nation, or siamese dream.
i do agree that theres a lot of awesome bands atm, particularly animal collective - but the majority of new stuff is poo

Don't be daft
no
Rock does not equal music.
So the answer is clearly no.
Animal collective are actually pretty boring
I think the majority of the "new bands" that get mentioned on here are also generally pretty uninspired, uninspiring and have nothing to say.
god the thought of animal collective being the pinnacle of music actually makes me ill
Aye
I can't believe the adulation they get. It's fucking disgraceful.
Yeah, but they're not exactly hyped are they?!
I love them.
Agreed
THAT IS CUZ
THURR IS NUTT ENUFF METALZZZ
99% of everything in every field is rubbish,
be it music, literature, visual art, whatever. But you can never predict when the next 1% is going to crop up and make you weep with joy.
Plus, it won't be till 10 years after something has happened that you'll fully appreciate it for the genius it is anyway, which is why you currently see Daydream Nation as so special. I wouldn't be surprised if I look back in 10 years and see I'm Wide Awake It's Morning or Lifted in exactly the same way.
the thread should end there^
nail.head
This is what I think.
It is like saying everything that has been invented has been invented. Are so close minded to things that you can't imagine where the next big thing will come from?
I think that we living in a different musical landscape but with the number of bands being given breaks now is higher than I can every remember, there will always be scope for someone to make something different.
i presume you mean
Digital Ash... but that aside, good points well made :)
Those halcyon days never existed
Although I think perhaps the moment American Football committed 'Never Meant' to tape, music may have indeed peaked
rock is dead.
Get over it.
Mostly Ridiculous.
'Computer-made sound' has been a part of popular music for the last 25 years.
'Collaboration' - what do you mean by this? The producers/artist approach has been in force for decades. Musicians from different bands working together on 'side-projects' demonstrates expanded creativity.
Perhaps nobody is going to come along and 'save rock'. But that whole concept is based on music being a product rather than a creative artform.
Granted, the music industry has changed somewhat remarkably. But, in my opinion, a recession of the industry will lead to a revolutionisation of the artform. Kind of like how it works with the economy and technology.
The majority of new stuff has been poo since the dawn of time.
Of course not you silly sausage.
Basically insert what hip_young said here.
Funnily enough
Exactly the same was said in 1975
Though, were they wrong?
;)
No
They were right. It's all been downhill from Wish You Were Here and Born To Run.
hehe
its fun to make ludicrous comments
stupid question.
Of course not... it peaked in the early 90s
Most of what has already been said applies: everyone has their halcyon days of music (which often correspond with their teens, as far as I can tell), but what's merely 'good' in a contemporary context can become classic with hindsight.
I used to be of the opinion that there was no truly great music about right now, but a few bands have forced me to change my tune.
I think this decade has been the best ever for music
if someone had told be that at the begining of the decade I would have called them a liar, seems to be on a slight downward slope at the moment but you never know what will come next. and on a tangent I don't think downloading is making it harder for new bands to break in, if they are good they quickly gain popularity that wooould have been impossible in the past, admitidly it means bands dont ever reach the superstar status because there is so much choice but I kinda think thats a good thing, I like the everyone making music in an unprofessional way because they enjoy it and the good ones rising. also daydream nation is one of the most tedious albums ever made
nah
Listen
to you bunch of whinging bastards! Boo bloody hoo.
Loads of stuff everywhere is AMAZING!!!!!
obviously, you're talking out of your penis
"songcraft is a relic", "computer made sound" etc.
but there is something to be said for the diffusion of the industry, and the way it's made the chances of there being an era-defining band like Radiohead very slim. If you look at everything released in 2008, can you see any which will almost certainly be featuring in the 2018 Q "100 greatest albums ever" poll? Not exactly a good test of quality i know, but the point remains
I've just drawn a graph of 'music'
Turns out it's a non-linear graph and has peaked at several times since the dawn of time. The current highest peak was in 1965 (or possibly 1979 or 1902, it gets a bit blurry in places due to weekly release dates and the like)
^
you're absolutely right - how could we have possibly missed it
after thousands and thousands of years of development and ingenuity, music stops today...
remember folks, you heard it here first
Peak Reached
March 20th 2000
is that
when Rialto's 2nd album flopped?
nope
try harder
Try Harder???
Youthmovies?? Tired Irie????? ;)
i was half expecting that response!
but no.
I'm not even sure if i'm being ironic or sarcastic anymore.
i've checked
i'm not
It peaked on July 19th actually
when Marathon became Snickers, Galway was liberated from Indians and the Ice Age ended....
Every few years...
...an album like 'Boy In Da Corner' comes along from the underground and shifts the public perspective and music along with it into a much better place.
Sure, from a white, guitar music perspective, there hasn't been a band like Nirvana in a while who have completely redefined culture, but that doesn't mean that music progressing in other areas.
99.9 % SHITE
Sad but true, new music is mostly poo- in the 40+ years that I have been a music junkie it's always mostly shit. But always, always, ALWAYS something comes along that turns everything upside down and refreshes the whole picture. Something that gets the juices flowing again, music will probably never peak- if you keep your ears open.
god this site is full of ignorant snobs sometimes
if you really can't find any new music that you like just give up and get some new interests.
^this
theres TOO much good music for me to take in i think
'zactly
oh well, i don't care
stop being an idiot
just look around more
Music is only getting better and better
Your FACE has peaked!
QED
hehe
its fun to make ridiculous comments and watch people get wound up about them
You don't know how to spell vacuum
What a loser! Hahahaha! You!
Come on
Bite!
ill bite your mum
y'bastard
what you talkin about spellin vacuum you lecherous choad
The cool music scene
has been in a vaccuum since Oasis hit it for six and it has been standing there, dazed, ever since.
Lay down your arms, artists, musicians, builders of today. In the words of Lionel Ritchie, "It won't get any better than this".
REAL MUSIC
STANLEY ROAD
whatever years were your formative musical ones
will be the "peak" for most people I think.
explosions underwater
basically sounds like he's getting old... Don't you remember hearing from your parents "It ain't what it used to be!"....exactly the same thing here just with some longer technical words to pad it out... It's ok thos explosions, it happens to all of us eventually...
i just like to make silly comments and watch people get pent up about it
its fun you see my dear dear friend
aha
mais oui...i see your plan! it's worked pretty successfully!
Trolling for responses:
probably one of the most irritating things you can do on a forum.
this... and is this the most pointless thread ever?
Idiot starts thread with some ignorant comments just so he can watch people disagree with them. Then he says he only made the comments to watch people get pent up, and we did, you see? But the trouble is that most peoples comments have actually been sensible and well thought out so it isn't actually that funny at all!
Yes, it is a bit silly.
Are you aware of this..?
http://www.theonion.com/content/news/pitchfork_gives_music_6_8
yes indeed
but it served its purpose of amusing me while i sit here at work.
im ever so sorry for spoiling it for you. i live in nottingham, if youre ever there feel free to drop by and ill cook you dinner and wash your feet for you. cos i am clearly in your debt
Nonsense
There's not all that much stuff that really excites me at the moment but there's always peaks and troughs.
Sooner or later something brilliant'll come along and you'll forget you ever started this conversation.
no
theres plenty of good stuff and crap stuff but thats the same as ever
well,
pretty much what hip_young_gunslinger said.
I think now is actually a really good time for rock music generally. The majority of new stuff is always "poo".
MUSIC DIED
When WASP stopped recording.
^ So true
I ride all alone and can't see
The road to nowhere anymore
And shadows whispers are calling me
To forbidden forests by the shore
And there she fell deep in the night
One breath away from heaven's light
And she said "Don't cry for me, I'm leaving you..."
The wind cries her name in the breeze But I can't hold her anymore
Some fallen angel had come to me
And fell to heavy on my soul
And stole from me the love that I heard
Lords of time say never die
And said "Don't cry for me, cause I'll be..."
Riding the wind forever free
High in the wind forever free
I'll ride the wind forever free
High in the wind forever free
Forever free
Forever in my hearts a fire, a fire burning
I wake up nights and hear her crying, crying my name
Riding the wind forever free
High in the wind forever free
I ride the wind forever free
High in the wind forever free
Forever free

Best rock ballad ever.
No
but rock as a concept that needs saving might go out the window...Of course the changes in the industry are going to have an effect on the form (along with a lot of other factors), but the idea of it peaking is ridiculous. And as a couple above have said, contemporary stuff is always considered rubbish, terminal decline and all that. Its a lot safer to listen to things that already have a place.
daydream nation, yeah?
totally overrated, yeah?
