Please help me. I have recently begun to listen to a lot of various different flavours of 'heavy' music - Dillinger, Converge, Mastadon, Drive like Jehu (I count them as heavy, so shut up) etc etc but they all have male vocals. What I'd love to hear is a band with a heavy style and female vocals - or a mixture of male and female (like the frankly stonking Circle Takes the Square).
The best suggestion will have the honour of having the next house-plant my wife impulse-buys named after their DiS user-name. Go.

rolo tomassi
i dunno if their myspace gives a good selection, but their ep is really good. although the female vocals aren't very obviously feminine.
You'll find some female stuff on the punk end of all that
Bikini Kill maybe?
Also, perhaps early Sleater Kinney.....(by which I mean anything which isn't The Woods)
Ta
I will wait and see if anyone has any other thoughts before telling MrsScagden that she has to call her next piece of greenery 'lemonbrickcombo' or 'fake blood'. Both of which would be excellent.
CTTS
Are going to probably be the best you'll get from this sort of stuff.
You could always check out Arch Enemy if you fancy a good lol.
Yeah I was going to say head in the 'riot grrl' direction
Or maybe Babes in Toyland
Open Hand
although they're not really metal, probably more QOTSA rock than anything, but they have a good female/male mix.
Look 'ere
Fuck the Facts, are just the band you're looking for. Mel is the best female screamer in metal. Fact.

Also, check out Witch Hunt - nice little crusty punk band with Female/Male vocals - and, of course, the mighty Kylesa who employ the same kind of two-way vocal attack.
1905
Perhaps, thought they're not very heavy.
As for hardcore/screamo...um
I can think of a couple, neither of which exist anymore:
Anomie

I Would Set Myself on Fire For You

More metallic:
Bloody Panda

Khylst (flat out terrifying sounding)

I must be able to dredge up some more
Runhild from Khlyst's old doom band, also featuring Steven and Greg from Sunn0)))

How about that album I've never got round to buying that Neurosis did with Jarboe from Swans? Or Swans in general I guess.
There aren't nearly enough.
and how could i forget
You can't go wrong with Wolves in the Throne Room's first album, Diadem of Twelve Stars. The female vocals are few and far between, but they totally make the album. So much better than the second one.
Good effort
I am already pretty damn keen on the Swans. I love the idea of a Sunn O))) spin off with female vocals. Sounds great.
The inestimable pot plant honour may well be yours. I won't inform the wife yet as who knows what else may be thrown up, but so far you are definitely in the lead. Are you excited?
thrilled to smithereens
Harpies:
twin female vocals, think they may have split up now, remember seeing them as a teenager doing the west midlands toilet circuit 5 or so years ago, could well be what you're after.

Khlyst sound amazing
seriously.
Obviously
Walls of Jericho
Wage of Sin are pretty good too
Hmm...
I Hate Sally maybe? They do have the post-hardcore image, but their music is dead heavy, almost like a female fronted Converge.
Or yeah...Kylesa! They have three vocalists, two male, one female. And they're dead good.
Agreed
Kylesa = Ace!
I Hate Sally seconded
Their last album deserved way more praise
hmm

Either...
Made Out Of Babies
or
Battle Of Mice
Both bands feature the incredible vocal stylings of Julie Christmas - I am particularly partial to Battle Of Mice.
Melt-Banana
PRE
Telekolleg
Possibly not precisely what you're after. But I came in thinking Circle Takes the Square.
That is definitely
a good thing to come in thinking
Arch Enemy

They ARE heavy!
yes to monarch!
the singer looks like a giggly schoolgirl tennis player .... "hello, we're monarch" in a really shy french accent then "RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGGHHHHHH". quite funny.
Monarch!
reminds me - their mates Overmars, who were truly incredible live a few months ago even though almost nobody came:
