'indie folk'

I've always being a stranger to things folk-oriented in music. I don't really know what constitutes something being 'folk', all I know is that I've been listening to a lot of stuff recently that I suspect could be folk, and wouldn't mind some more of it. I've always liked Joanna Newsom, but recently I've been listening to Hush the Many, Rosie Taylor Project, Patrick Wolf (folktronica?). So yeah. Enlighten me.

Try My Latest Novel...

...Wolves. Although don't be put off on the first listen. They are one of these annoying bands who are much better live..

i'm never entirely sure what counts as 'folk' either

but the following all have folky elements (and are ace):
the mountain goats
nick drake
bon iver
devendra banhart
nina nastasia
ola podrida
okkervil river
king creosote
noah & the whale
fireworks night

don't forget JonRae!

or is this just straightup country? i just don't understand how to group music, at all.

Elliott Smith

Ryan Adams.
Bright Eyes.
Josh Rouse
Josh Ritter.
Nick Drake.

is that what 'indie folk' means, then?

miserable bastards who happen to have an acoustic guitar?

I thought if you had an accoustic guitar, it meant that...

..you were a protest singer.

Oh I can smile about it now etc.

more folk than indie

but The Imagined Village album from last year was really good. It was done by the Afro-Celt soundsystem guy and features Billy Bragg, Paul Wellor, Martin & Eliza Carthy, Benjamin Zephaniah, Tunng, Trans-Global Underground and others. Its a treat.

Hmm, not really an expert, but...

Sufjan Stevens
Akron/Family
Okkervil River
The Microphones/Mount Eerie
Mirah
The Mountain Goats
The Books

Chop the indie bit off the front,

it sounds shit, try Jackson C. Frank, brilliant and tragic.

^ Definitely

This man knows his onions, Jackson C. Frank was amazing and sadly still so unknown. I was reading about his life recently, genuinely heartbreaking.

give a try to

Marissa Nadler
Samamidon
Josephine Foster
Doveman
Promise and the Monster
The Sleeping Years
Lauter

The Tallest Man on Earth

Find The Tallest Man on Earth EP. You'll be impressed.

I would say

Laura Marling - quality stuff

Try

Bon Iver
Fionn Regan
Beirut
Iron and Wine
or maybe even
www.myspace.com/godwits ? :-)

^^ Fionn Regan

Thats a really good album!

ooh,

if you like Joanna then try Cokiyu, she's like a Japanese version only more daydreamy.

Id second all the above and add:

St Vincent
Tunng
Smog
Fleet Foxes
Kat Flint

...

Peter and the Wolf (the American one).

Tom Brosseau

Lou Barlow
Beth Orton
Thirty Pounds of Bone

this thread

So

Mumford and Sons are very good.

gossamer

ableton.

hello,

yes you may like to check out us gossamer albatross.
myspace.com/gossameralbatross
we fit this genre I suppose.
We're recording with hugo from Jonquil who you should also check out. they fit this genre.

and check out Jeremy Warmsley.
and Patrick Wolf's first and second album.

I saw you...

Supporting casiotone, and yes I agree you were folk(ish) and good.

Check out Grizzly Bear too.

The Accidental

...

http://www.myspace.com/theaccidental

The first 2 songs in particular are brilliant.

I must check them out.

Other stuff you can add to this list.

Cat Power (not the Greatest. Not The Greatest!)
Islands
The Mountain Goats
Band of Horses

Basically the North Americans are doing this stuff better than anyone.
Add Final Fantasy to it.
THe National
Sufjan Stevens
Laura Veirs
Marla Hansen
Beirut ( but the second album is a bit cack)
A Hawk and a Hacksawk
Okkervil River
Neutral Milk Hotel

ooo

that Marla Hansen record is fine. Its very heartwarming!

more north americans:
Marissa Nadler
INLETS (their record is a free download)
My Brightest Diamond (less folk maybe)
The Battle Of Land & Sea

also no-one's mentioned Leonard Cohen.

this thread is great..

....especially if you are trapped in norfolk unable to get your ass to gigs. i just clicked on godwits, purely because of my avian obsession, and i am liking what i am hearing.

i second tyrannosaurus rex. patrick wolf, noah and the whale and laura marling are pretty much on constant rotation at the moment.

king charles is worth a mention.
http://www.myspace.com/zadokthepriest
i was left gobsmacked when i saw him on laura marling's bosun's locker tour.

erm...

jeremy warmsley
emmy the great
slow club
sleeping states

definitely noah and the wale

johnny flynn and the sussex wit
kid harpoon

this thread

is so book marked

Aw, Hush The Many...Nima :)

They are playing with Mathew Sawyer and The Ghosts soon
Quite a sweet band
Look them up

my old flatmate :)

He is a lovely man.

Ace!

Are you going on tuesday?

john fahey

jack rose
gillian welsch (sp?)
be good tanyas (a bit more poppy, but still great)
jolie holland
american analog set
akron family

I'm too late

A lot of replies pretty much cover where you should go.

Maybe try some of T.Rex's older material when they were under the name Tyrannosaurus Rex it resembles Banhart's work so much it's eerie.

DAVID THOMAS BROUGHTON

folk guy with a sampler, mesmerising and he looks like a total fucking babe!!! He's like the indie folk husband I'm never going to have!! Plus his last album was amazing - "its in there somewhere". And no, thats not a plug!

YES

Yes I second David Thomas Broughton, a very entertaining live show too!

Indie Folk

would probably be jeff lewis or netural milk hotel but then you could say they aer antifolk.
