or rather, "free printed materials". So free speech isn't free anymore.

Here is the warning: http://bp0.blogger.com/_bmTd42i0Occ/R-uiJh8B_TI/AAAAAAAACTI/cpoxPfCHmCs/s1600-h/IMG_2564.jpg

If you'd like to join me here in Brighton next week for an art protest then send me a pm.

An 'art protest'

That sounds really wanky.

yes

it does.

But it is an art project, because people will be encouraged to make their own "free printed material" and hand it out the day before the ban comes into force. But it's still a protest.

^gay

You are a moron

...

and?

XD

Well I thought that....

From what I've heard before, I thought you had to apply for a license anyway to flyer for gigs and events in Brighton.

Secondly, will the council actually enforce this? I hope not because I find out about a lot of events through just wandering around town and being offered flyers. I guess there's a litter factor in banning it but if the council put in more bins around the North Laine and the Lanes then there wouldn't be a problem.

Finally, from the map it appears that flyering will continue on the uni campus areas (Brighton and Sussex).

Also I'm not sure about an art protest

But some sort of small demo/petition could get things going?

it's sort of like a demo

isn't it? i'm not good with words.

The art collective i'm involved with have had their 2p already: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=206780071&blogID=372933222

Finally it does make it clear that all political and religious leaflets are allowed

Just get leaflets printed up with "Considering voting for the Green Party?" on the front and then club details on the back... JACKPOT!

:D

y'seen this?

http://blognostic.wordpress.com/2008/03/24/uk-police-try-to-ban-political-film/

mr T-T got a letter from Brighton & Hove council after posting that.

i'd heard about the film being banned

not seen that blog though. Interesting...

Whilst this sucks for promoters...

I can understand the logic. People handing flyers out to disinterested people on the street

a) annoys the fuck out of people. Including me. If someone banned the people who try and force fuckloads of shit in my hands when I walk down the street in London (including the London Lite and London paper for that matter) I'd be extremely happy.

b) causes shitloads of litter.

Presumably you're still allowed to flyer in venues, just not in public spaces?

In which case I have to say that I can see far greater concerns to be protesting about.

But in the same way

i can see far greater concerns for the government to be dealing with in terms of environmental impact. Promoters like Don't Panic ensure that their litter is largely dealt with, and although it is likely to be impossible to control the amount of litter that any city generates, i see a lot more crisp packets than i do flyers strewn about the place, and nobody's banning the public intake of wrapped comestibles. Yes the London Lite/Paper is annoying but promoters in Brighton tend to be less confrontational and most places, like Don't Panic, have a policy of only engaging those who appear intersted in the first place.

Banning the distribution of free printed material - and it doesn't state whether this includes venues or not, which is a concern - looks likely to have a number of negative impacts on Brighton as a cultural city. Not only is it in essence a limit on free speech but it also means that those who can't afford big fuck-off billboards to promote things are unlikely to get anywhere. Even if it's intended by the government or not it will have the potential to be hugely detrimental to any sense of counter-culture.

i know there's still a war on and everything but i'm allowed to be annoyed at more than one thing at once, surely?

okay

pirates
ketchup
famine
this

...tibet will have to wait.

Yes.

But

a) this doesn't change the fact a lot of people take it see what it is and then throw it on the floor when not interested. I'm not saying this is the flyerer's fault because of course it isn't. But I can see why it might make someone want to ban flyering.

b) Some people are needlessly aggressive at handing things out on the street. Honestly (and of course I speak for London, not Brighton) I find it quite aggravating at times to walk down the street with massloads of peopele blocking my way and trying to force things into my hands.

the urge is killing me

..........argh
