Have just started getting into Godspeed...never really delved into post-rock before now and am finding it staggeringly beautiful. At the moment I am preferring Lift Yr. Skinny Fists to F?A?? despite most people saying F?A?? is their masterpiece. What does everyone reckon? Also what's Yanqui like? Haven't given it a listen yet. Now that I'm into this post-rock stuff could you guys recommend me some more?

its kind of a shame you started with that album

as the whole rest of the genre pales in comparison, F#A~ is nearly as good but yanqui is disapointing

So

you're saying that I am doomed to be disappointed with any post-rock album I get on the back of these guys? Damn.

thee silver mount zion

13 blues,new album alsome.

Ok

Thanks will check this out soon.

as far as godspeed side projects go

the first set fire to flames record is incredible

for the LOVE OF GOD

get the right set fire to flames record.

'sings reign rebuilder' is genius and captures atmosphere better than any other post rock record.

'telegraphs in static' is a double CD with about 10 minutes worth of music and ideas. Avoid.

lift yr skinny fists

is in my opinion the best complete post-rock work. so i guess you've started in the right place.
otherwise I would check out:

Slint - Spiderland
A Silver Mt ZIon - Born into light..
Bark Psychosis - Codename:Dustsucker
Mogwai - Young Team
Yndi Halda - Enjoy Eternal Bliss
Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place

k thanks a lot

Aaahh am listening to Sleep now. Has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever created no? The last movement is completely incredible

Well...

The Yndi Halda album is my favourite post rock album.

Of course, Mogwai, Explosions and Sigur Ros are brilliant and pretty easy to get a hold of.

Post rock is a great genre, despite you starting with some of the best material of its type, I am sure you will find more you will love.

Also

don't you think that post-rock is an inaccurate title for this genre? To me this sounds more like a progression of classical music; pre-rock if you like with its long tracks split up into movements and the large amount of strings and horns as well as conventional rock instruments. Opinions?

I think thats true of godspeed

but most bands label post rock play structurally very simple music that isnt at all like classical (mogwai, eits etc.). ive always liked the term snorecore

I guess

I know very little on the genre so its hard for me to comment. But have also heard Sigur Ros who (although their tracks are not quite as long) sound like a progression of classical also...sounds as if Post-rock is a more varied genre than I first thought

post-rock

encompasses a lot of things. Mogwai, Slint, 65days, EITS, Mono etc etc all are fairly rocky and I mostly find them dull (not necessarily the bands I mentioned, but y'know the type I mean...). But there are some great bands that are definitely more "classical" - Rachel's, Esmerine, World's End Girlfriend and Cue in particular are highly recommended. I guess Yndi Halda fit in here as well...
I also love love love everything ASMZ have done (infinitely more so than any Godspeed), so check all that out. And Tortoise are just brilliant, though different again - they're a lot jazzier than anything mentioned so far, and draw on a lot of krautrock and dub and early electronics and stuff.
Of course, people will point out that there are a lot of copyists and that 95% of the genre is dull - to which I say, name me a genre that's any different...

Damn

I forgot that one.

Right

In all honesty I had no idea there was that much variation going on in post-rock thanks for enlightening me. Will check a lot of this out, thanks!!

Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada

gets my vote for best godspeed evah. Go for early Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky and check out "One Step More and You Die" by Mono, which is a corker.

Id have to agree

'Slow Riot...' is the perfect distillation of Godspeed's sound: its just two big pieces of perfect brooding drama. Lift yr skinny fists is also very good but it has a lot of ambient/found sound sections, which though excellent, break up the big pieces just a bit too much.
Never been that fond of F/A infinity ti be honest.

Honestly, though - get 'Slow Riot...' it's a stunner. Fuck Mogwai off though, they're rubbish.

You may Die In The Desert's

Record "Bears In The Yukon" may not be startlingly original but it is a particularly beautiful album, and although I mention them everytime but This Will Destroy You really are quite good.

can

anyone recommend me a good Tortoise album?

Millions Now Living Will Never Die

I'd also recommend the same record, but at the wrong speed.

seconded, thirded and fourthed

sounds nothing like Godspeed, but then it sounds nothing really like anything. Truly great and original.

YANQUI

is well worth having - slow riot for zero kanada is also great

Try

Jackie O Motherfucker- Flags of the sacred harp.
Valley Of the Giants-s/t
Belle Orchestre- Recording a tape
Philip Glass and/or Steve Reich
Wilderness-S/T or the other one.
Max Richter- Songs From before

All the side projects and stuff are worth exploring, but don't expect it all to sound the same.

=

Using rock instruments for non-rock purposes.

i'd also like to recommend

strap the button

And Epic45!

I a;lways forget them

Listen to this guy...

Anything by Jackie-O Motherfucker or Steve Reich (a god among men, a fucking genius). The Blue Notebooks always stood out for me as the best Max Richter record but Songs From Before is essential listening as well.
