Black Kids Vocalist - can he actually sing?

Argument with the Mrs last night while dozing in front of Jools Holland - the vocalist from Black Kids has one of those lurching 'searching-for-a-note' voices - a bit like the guy from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! I thought that his vocals were good enough and distinctive but I was admittedly, half asleep. My better half (who knows how to sing) said that he was the worst singer that she had ever heard. Who's right?

The missus is right: This shit where people who can't sing join bands and make the fact that their voices are annoying and atonal into a 'thing' needs to stop right now.

Also: They suck.

^^

this

lol

"break your mammas back"

funny kids

they weren't really 'singing' though

still, I'd rather that than Black Kids.

both

depends on what you like I spose.

To me, he sounds like he's trying to sound like Robert Smith, yon singer from the Cure. But doesn't do it well.

But maybe I'm shrooming.

^^this.

he sounds like he wants to be robert smith.

I thinks he's a good frontman.

He sounds quite like Robert Smith, but it works well with the music. Sounds energetic and passionate.

And they're great. One of the most promising bands out there.

Eh

His voice is the only interesting thing about them. They sound like winners of an X-Factor for indiepop.

mobileact?

...

Not quite

they haven't pulled out the Radio Killed The Video Star sing-a-long yet. Everybody clap your hands!! AWWW THE RADIO STAAARRRR!!!

Promising?

i have to disagree.. i think they are bloody awful and just another buzz band that will burn out quicker than they came about.

And with the robert smith thing i totally agree... hes also got a marc bolan thing going on with the way he looks and holds himself.

i'm worse.

true fact.

Well, is he worse than Kele form Bloc Party

or Yannis from Foals? There are lots of singres who can't sing. I don't think he's one of them.

god

i can't believe no one picked up on this. one of my favourite lyrics.

A lot of bands frontmen can't technically sing.

So either you enjoy it or not...
Personnally I don't.
But I'm sure I've heard worse...

^

i wouldn't say people on this site could be into pitch perfect voices. Alot of alternative music is made by people who can't sing and some that started out thinking they wouldn't have to sing but ended up doing so. It's not like you'd expect this kid to be a belter or hitting perfect notes. It's a funny way to look at music, is so and so in tune - sounds like American Idol. It comes down to the fact that some people dislike some voices. Antony of the Johnsons notoriously has a marmite voice.

Has

anyone mentioned the fact that he sounds like Robert Smith?

^^

see above.

one of my favourite singers

is john lydon, more for his work with PIL than with the Sex Pistols tbh. Of course he couldn't sing at all but he has a very distinctive voice which creates a certain atmosphere, and forces you to sit up and take notice.

I heard the Black Kids for the first time yesterday on Jools and i wasn't impressed, i just found them annoying, especially his voice because he so blatantly was doing his best Robert Smith impression. It didn't feel natural to me at all, very forced and contrived.

maybe that's what happens

when you haven't had time to develop your own sound and vocal style. That aside I can't see the appeal of this band and they get far too much talk time on here. that Boyfriend dance song is just irritating.

when i saw them live

he was a little out of tune at times but generally mostly competent.

Jules needs

TO sort that show out and press the mute button on the vocal channel, either that or buy antares autotune!

Someone here said he sounds like he is crying

I think that is the best way to describe his vocals.

With some bands it is obvious they can't sing well, but it suits the music. E.g Arcade Fire, NMH

most unnessecary

lol of the week?

I don't geddit.

don't get what?

oh, I GET it.

You can't reply in the right place.

How would Jools pressing mute on his television help?

Singers are singers are singers. The number of distinctive voices whose owners would be held up for ridicule in the early stages of The X Factor probably outnumber those that wouldn't, and if everyone sounded like Leona Lewis or Leon thingy I think we might have to all kill ourselves.

Its much worse when people try to sing

who clearly cant. HOTS were the classic example of this.

the main point is

Black Kids are Rubbish

I dont see who defines who can and cant sing?

Surely some of the best music comes from not doing what everyone else says you should do?

Yes

but now that EVERYONE's not doing what everyone else says they should, maybe it's time for a rethink...?

Anyway - in indie circles, everyone IS telling them to do things the way they are doing them! I don't hear any record companies advising Luke Pritchard to pronounce his lyrics more concisely or telling Yannis to hone a broader vibrato.

I've realised recently

that I hate all bands with singers that sound like a damsel in distress. Forward Russia are the epitome of this, and I hate them. Arcade Fire? Check. Foals? Oui.

I've just realised right now

that I hate all bands with singers that don't sound like that.

me too

Of course he can sing

Anyone can sing. Can he sing like you have to be able to on X Factor? No, he can't. Does it matter? No, cos he's in an indie pop band and it's not called for. Do you need someone to be able to sing like Boyzone before you can appreciate their throwaway guitar tunes?

He can't

He can't sing, he has nothing special about his voice either, this band won't get further than a second slbum. New indie tripe.

And by the token

you're saying that David Berman or Will Oldham CAN sing?

He can sing, just in a messed up way (like Berman or Oldham).

the = this

ps. He's probably the first person to admit his voice is shit

It's not the point.

He does sound like he's crying through a cold though. Poor sod.

I admit that

some people, Jeff Mangum for instance, can't sing, but get away with it by having a voice that you can enjoy listening to. I even like Joanna Newsom's screeching voice on her first album!

But I can't stand this whining stuff like this guy and the guy from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, it just ruins the music

And anyway, Robert Smith isn't an especially bad singer; this guy is!

never mind his voice

he ought to tune his guitar if he's on jools holland!

i really like them

but he sounds fucking gash on this...

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uK4ysfwpC4U

He's excellent live.

What IS noticable about Black Kids is that the two girls can't carry a tune in a bucket. Not that this matters a jot, because energy and enthusiasm win over technical ability any day of the week.

the girls are great

they remind me of the go! team

Surely anyone can sing...

...its just if they can sing well or not. The only thing to my mind that couldn't sing in someway is a Giraffe as it has no vocal box.

yep

If that guy didn't have the afro, he'd be totally useless...

That performance on Jools Holland was tuneless. I was none too impressed.

Your misses is right - an afro can often sway opinion but she is a great judge of character and talent. She is a keeper, ask her to marry you one day )if you haven't already).

Don't tell her I said this, it will give her ideas.

; )

Sounds like your actually his missus in disguise!

:os

AArgh! My cover is blown.... ABORT ABORT ABORT

kidding! Yeah, it kind of does doesn't it? With a little line at the end to throw him off the scent.

black kids

are just....

SHIT?!

Yeh

I like them too

Clearly

a singer does not have to have a great voice in the traditional mould to be able to interpret a lyric effectively (Bob Dylan and Billie Holiday spring to mind). However - from my own experience - the indie scene has a real problem with someone who actually does try to sing in a more 'traditional' manner.

Critics have a hell of a time placing my vocals as they just aren't used to the 'considered' sound and probably wouldn't care for the sort of singers I like. The reality, of course is that shouting and whining has become the norm and current indie will continue to lap up male 'anti-singing' (notice females are generally expected to put a little more effort in) because it doesn't know any better.

An indie/punky disregard for 'proper' singing has been the norm for too long, yet many indie people STILL think that it's somehow cutting edge! The fact that the Kooks have cornered the market and made a fortune from 'quirky' 'anti-vocals' suggests to me that it's time people started doing a bit of SINGING again! What could be more revolutionary than that?

^this

and so many of the replies in the thread have really wound me up. Having a strong voice does not have to equal being Leona Lewis. Argghhh!

Actually it's not the tunefulness, (or lack of it) that ruins a lot of indie vocals, its just being really really weak. Someone else mentioned Forward Russia and I think thats a really good example. If people know they can't sing they just shout and its such a grating, horrible sound.

Personally

I don't mind the shouters/whiners - if it's done well it can be fascinating. However isn't it sad that indie vocals seem to be predominantly from the school of yelling and moaning?

People have convinced themselves that actually achieving a full, consistent vocal timbre is somehow regressive and indicates a lack of artistry and experimentation. PAh! Practically EVERY INDIE BAND DOES THE SHOUTY/WHINY/FEY! It's positively MOR, baby! :)

yep

it's shit. And often combined with some shite anodyne anecdote about going out and getting pissed and meeting a girl and some kerrazy shit happening, how old she was etc. I blame the arctic monkeys

no

he can't.

they are shit.

The Cure

trubute band

i know what you mean.. h

But I think yes, just been watching their new video on myspace the graphics are great - with the quirky style he sings the way the video is made up it works.
