If everyone lists an amazing band that, as someone who really doesn't like a lot of current guitar music, i really need to know, i will type out my scathing or praiseworthy views and opinions on every single one of them. Go on, there must be one current band that you treasure that someone like me needs to check out! I sometimes feel sad that there are very few bands doing things with guitars right now that really pull me in and let me fall in love. Most of the current crop of 'cool' bands are fucking rubbish to my ears.
Mistys
Big Adventure?
MBA
Kicking off, the female backing vocals sounded a lot like The Free Design, which made me excited for a second, but then the poor-man's B-52s bloke starts prattling on and i just find myself wanting to punch his face off. If i loved this, i would hate myself. Deeply uninspired chord progressions too. Brass is nice though. On a whole, no.

This started off rubbish
until i made up my mind that it was actually ok. I can imagine them looking really smug and self-satisfied making this music. Some nice touches and towards the end of the first track up on their Myspace, they were totally rocking the house. But, overall, far too self-indulgent and, to me, they sounded like they couldn't have care less about people liking their tunes.
It's not entirely awful, it's listenable and almost enjoyable, but this is something i'll very rarely listen to more than a handful of times. I guess i used to listen to similar stuff and go "Wow!! How did he rock that bit??!!", but not anymore.
I commend you on putting something forward that wasn't just haircut-indie.
:D
no probs.
Born Ruffians
BR
The song 'Foxes Mate For Life' is really, really great, bouncy and funky and really enjoyable. The rest is so-so, his voice is whiny and blah (the start of 'I Need A LIfe' had me cringing and wanting him to shut up - the first guitar part sounded like The Libertines too, until it went funkier and better, but still, that voice..) All in, it just doesn't push my buttons. I am almost close to liking this though and will look into them a little more.
Well you already like Copy Haho.
Still the best LS6 band years and years and years after they formed:
www.myspace.com/bilgepump
Their new LP just came out. There's a song off it at:
http://www.myspace.com/gringorecords
As an aside: Neil Turpin is probably one of the greatest drummers in the world.
BP
Quack Quack are amazing. I love them.
Bilge Pump, on the other hand, are rubbish, instantly forgettable, wank riffage dullness. Sorry
Ha!
My feelings are vice versa.
bilge pump = yes please.
(matt have you listened to that new record yet?)
When you use phrases like
'the current crop of bands', is it any wonder you haven't found anything interesting?
I would recommend Kayo Dot, but they're not everyones cuppa by a long shot.
"current crop of bands" can encompass all of the world's 2008 bands
Kayo Dot. Over 3 minutes into the first song on their Myspace and i want to fall asleep. It sounds like a giant yawn and i don't want to listen to more, because i'd like to go on my gut instincts.
I don't like a band you like?
I'm sure you'll get over it.
No.
'i've listened for three whole minutes and i'ts putting me to sleep, yadda yadda yadda'
you're boring.
The last time I properly fell head over heels in love with a record
It was Circle Takes the Square - 'As the Roots undo'. It really is very very special.
But it depends, what kind of thing do you like? CTTS is rather on the ear-shredding sound and that will put a lot of people off. What is to your taste?
Anything that isn't chart music
CTTS: Metal band with chanting and thin, squawking vocals, not to mention dubious production and a kick-drum louder than the guitars. On first listen, i don't like this.
how narrow-minded of you
chart music can be brilliant.

Russia
FR
Deeply uninspired, nothing music with vocals that sound like someone forcing a bowl of smug through The Wicker Chair Of Pretentious Yawning.
I can hear this coming out the PA of a Carling Academy and me wanting to take a shovel to someone's features.

Six Nation State

SNS
Lad-rock jingle jangle, Carling beer sing-a-long garbage with chord progressions that have been so overly-used that i want to kill everyone involved in music.
my old band supported them
this is almost exactly what i thought.
:D
what kind of stuff you you like?
so i have something to go on...
The Poppycocks
www.myspace.com/poppycocks
also, The Wave Pictures.
Poppycocks
sound too much like The Divine Comedy, but not as amusing or as good. Quite embarrassing, rubbish vocals and sad, try hard lyrics. Boring, heard it all before music.
Pop, rock, indie, folk, world music, dance, electro, hardcore
etc. etc.
ummmm,
this is my usual list...
BARR
the 6ths
the blow
manicured noise
+ some more, but i can't remember.
BARR
I know and love.
The 6ths' first song on Myspace: Dreamy soundscape.. vocals make me want to punch my ears in and i've already turned it off. I'm tired now and this will be my last comment on DiS user's recommended bands. Thanks to all.
apologies for making you want to punch your ears out.
:(
You didn't
He did.
yeah well.
it was probably the weakest out of everything i suggested. my bad.
Six Organs of Admittance
Ben Chasny IS one of the best guitarists currently around.
SOOA
First song on Myspace: vocals are rubbish. Guitars sound like a rip off of a Mazzy Star song and the overall mystical, psychadelic vibe is cringeworthy. Not for me.
Thats off the new one
which i haven't heard, so can't vouch for.
But he does make amazing music.
Try the track Bless your blood.
Am I allowed to recommend another band I love for you to put down?
If so:

^
Rumoured to be playing in London soon.
RFTC
are one of the all-time greatest rock bands, so i like this, even if i know (and can admit) that deep down if it wasn't Speedo in charge, it wouldn't instantly agree with my ears and would maybe take a while before i could like it.
It's not something i will listen to very much and could easily be dismissed on the grounds of being "not as good as RFTC", but i wouldn't stoop that low :)
For "like", read "love", as i do like it.
<3
I miss RFTC so much. I assume you have the 'R.I.P' CD/DVD, what did you think? Good final send off?
I don't have it yet
To be honest, i'd much rather watch earlier shows of theirs than their last one, but i'm hoping it will be awesome.
Architects
or Dead Swans
Mind you they're not very new,
but they did have a split out in February.

BMSR and Tinariwen
I know and love.
You win for suggesting two bands i love.
Then try the other two!
I'm tired now and wont listen to the rest
Thanks for trying.
Pete and the Pirates
What do you say?
How about somebody not cool but allegedly "technically brilliant"?
I give you John Mayer. Note that I have no opinion on this guy.
The Adam Brown
