according to me cos our vans late and im a bit bored and nostalgic and my housmates left half a j in the ashtray

1) the new flapper at the back of the nia
- improved stage, supergood staff and new lights. winner despite legacy of editors and twang.

2) the rainbow on digbeth. you can smoke on the stage cos its technically outdoors. and theres a barbeeque

3) the jug of ale in moseley. the ghost of king adora lives in the boarded up dresing room

4) market tavern on westside. best club nights ever, home of the punks. rip.

5) the foundry by snobs. 2 stages and pinball machines. rip.

6) actress and bishop. expensive and awful sound but bizarrely wide stage.

7) hare and hounds in kings heath. i heard its much improved but only weird outsider bands or obscure european punk bands go there now.

8) barfly. worst barfly of them all. by quite a long, incompetent and flood damagaged way.

9) um, scruffy murphys cellar?

10) i think birmingham could do with some more venues.

TOKYO LUCKY HOLE!

was thee best night ever. i saw so many good bands there. chris and penny are still my heros. no its not, the last gig was a punk alldayer the other week. shame..
xx

haa it was amazing

i stil have some of the flyers knocking around somewere. i loved the fact that downstairs was still old people doing kareoke

Tokyo Lucky Hole was ace

Market Tavern was well scary to walk into though, and there always felt like a chance of being stabbed outside!

and rainbow

is the winner for me these days, best atnosphere i find.

don't suppose

you know any other acts playing at rainbow on the 13th?

planning on going to see you but would be pretty lame if you were the only ones worth seeing.

p.s.

yeah birmingham sucks for music at the best of times.

Where's this

Place you guys are playing in Digbeth that the NME are doing? "The Place I Love"? it's not just a night at the Barfly is it?

Brum def needs more venues. Then again they driving out anything 'real' out of the city centre and putting coffee shops instead!

Eddies got burned down. I saw quite a few gigs there, oh and the Gallows ithink it was called next door. Costas did gigs occasionally.

thanks

for that, been trying to find out about this but the rainbow site is pants.

this will be fun.

what about

the sunflower lounge?

The Sanctuary is being converted into a gig venue.

Or so I heard. That will be good.

Hare And Hounds

Very, er, funny: Acid Mothers Temple played there recently; soon, Merzbow; later, Melt Banana; also, recently, John Cooper Clarke.

Other venues are Island upstairs (cocktails); Bull's Head, Moseley (big speakers in a small room); Spotted Dog (it's free); Glee Club (sit down and be quiet); Adam And Eve (Thursday's gig this week is going to be on telly); Lamp Tavern (for all your Improv needs); Sunflower Lounge (haven't you played there?); Black Horse (haven't you played there?); Factory Club (haven't you played there?); Queens (free cheese sandwiches).

free

cheese sandwiches? where is this place and why havnt i been there? what kind of cheese? toasted sandwiches? whats the quality like? is there a maximum number of sandwiches per customer or is it one free sandwich per drink bought? free cheese sandwiches you say?

It's mature cheese

There's no limit per person

Also, serves real ale in proper old glasses with handles

i missed

the sandwich order at work today, to explain my excitment at the prospect of free cheese snacks. where abouts is this place?

Newhall Street

outside the inner ring road

Saturdays, acoustic gigs

I've never been to Birmingham

Is The Place I Love as lovely as I hope?

it

is a lot better, i now admit to being born here

i really need to investigate

the brum gig scene much more than i have considering i have lived here for nearly 3 years.

The academy and scruffy's is about the size of my experience, mainly as i practically live above these places. Well, in the case of Scruffy's i actually do.

Embarrassing much?

As Above

go here

and click on seperate days

You must be

in my year at Aston then.

I've only ever been to the Academy and the Custard Factory for gigs, which is a pretty poor effort too. Especially since I *hate* the Academy.

lol indeed

you have my card marked.

in the case of the academy, well i don't think anyone has much of a good word to say about any of them but unfortunately it is where the majority of *popular* bands choose to play and certainly in my case its bloomin' convenient.

I think my aim for the summer will be certainly to have a gander at Traynor's list but at the moment money and time are a constraint.

Aston

I'm failing my degree there at the moment!

It's a shame the guild is so craptastic as the blue room would be a really good shape and size for mid-level bands if they opened it up and let outside stuff happen there. Birmingham really lacks a middle venue for people who are too small for Academy and too big for everywhere else, the guild would be the perfect size for that. Although The Place I Love is going to be able to hold about 500 people I hear so that's pretty snazzy.

i'm

aston too.

suprised so many of us are from a little uni like that. :O

I always

thought that no-one here had good taste at all! It's all New York New York and that kind of stuff here.

Shameless jag but you should come and see the band I'm in, Ace Bushy Striptease, play because we are the second best band at the uni (we came behind Leg!end X in the battle of the bands) and we shout sometimes and then do nice melody bits and yeah.

There are free entry gigs

Buying drinks is optional

Spotted Dog (Digbeth), Queens (Hockley) and Old Wharf (Digbeth) gigs are free

Alexei,

I thought you said that Cardiff Barfly was the worst that you have been too.

naaaaaaaah

i quite like cardiff barfly. we always get a decent rider and the graffitti is v funny.

going to hare and hounds

for Merzbow hopefully. Queens sounds interesting

I love the flapper

even if it is full of dodgy heads and underage drinkers (to be fair i haven't been for about a year)

The Rainbow bemuses me as it's become the uber cool trendy art-student hangout.

Has it?

When I go it's full of old men listening to instrumental rock sat in the corner

or. maybe that's just me

the rainbow

is indeed full of beardy men listening to instrumental music, maybe we're just there on the same days..?
