The Guardian has run a list of the top ten music venues in London. What do you think, eh? One omission, glaring: Wembley Stadium. LOL @ NME…
Okay, so it's only pubs, actually; stadiums left to one side for now. Featuring some quote action from some editor of some site somewhere, the article by Mic Wright – read it in full here – lists the following as the capital’s current top spots for live music and decent boozing:
1) Half Moon, Putney (link)
2) Dublin Castle, Camden (link)
3) The Black Sheep, Croydon (link)
4) The Old Blue Last, Shoreditch (link)
5) Filthy McNasty’s, Angel
6) Nambucca, Archway (link)
7) The Windmill, Brixton (link)
8) The George & Dragon, Old Street
9) The Hope & Anchor, Islington
10) New Cross Inn, New Cross
So, thoughts? Me, I like the Betsey…
as i said in the other thread
luminaire ftw.
As he said in the other thread
Luminaire FTW.
Also: The Cargo and Bush Hall (and if it hadn't closed down, the Spitz.)
I'll nominate
Cargo.
I actively dislike the Luminaire.
WEIRDO
But
The Luminaire isn't a pub. It's a gig venue.
how very odd!
i go to rather a lot of gigs, and have only been to two of those in the last year, and 6 in my life. i really do wonder what type of criteria its based on.
bardens should be there
^ that... Bardens has moved from strength to strength
even in the last 12 months, let alone 3 years or so.
^ and I also love The Old Blue (yes yes) and also The George and Dragon
which is just SOOOOOOO much fun on a Sunday night. Yup.
whoops - but this is about PUBS.
Not venues.
6 in my life, 3 in last year
agree on bardens. cargo should be on there too. and i happen to think that the scala is ace and can't understand why it isn't on there - unless they mean bars/clubs rather than venues
Well...
Luminaire should obviously be in there. Happy to see Nambucca on the list though. I've been there three times recently, and the sound is always excellent.
The Hopeless W**ker should never appear on any Best Live Venue lists, EVER.
as said in other thread
the George and Dragon might be confusing and it's definitely a fun place to get a bit claustrophobic in on a Sunday night from time to time (and apparently they don't want to be listed as a gay pub even though it's fair to say the clientele is at the very least very mixed) but it's definitely not a live music venue...
?!
CARGO IS NUMBER 1
A very elitist list really
What's really puzzling is the Half Moon topping the list. A ok venue with a nice enough layout but how often does a decent band play there? A sizable proportion of bands there are fucking covers bands too. Coming soon: Doors Alive, Too Rex, Counterfeit Beatles, Limehouse Lizzy, Rollin' Stoned.
Whoopie fucking shit. I bet the writer lives somewhere nearby.
me mess up
PUBS, not venues.
the original article still says venues tho
!
The Boogaloo in Highgate
Under-rated gem of a juke-joint.
i keep meaning to
go there.
the new cross inn for bands?
It's ok but I rarely even remember who I saw there and can name 3/4 pubs within a mile radius I'd rather see a band
HOPE & FUCKING ANCHOR?????????
purlease
I like Nambucca and G&D, but I've hardly been to the other ones, save for Dublin Dumpster
The Boogaloo rules as a pub
but the gigs are always secret so it's all lowkey and exclusive which isn't much use unless you're psychic or drink in there every single night.
the fox
in lewisham is outstanding - cheap beer, huge smoking garden, live bands almost every night and a jukebox that actually has things like at the drive-in for non-band nights.
amazed that the windmill wasn't higher in this list. god bless that place.
When I lived near Putney
I kept wishing they would put something good on there so I could go to a gig and not have to travel all the way across town. But everything on the listings sounded so awful I never went.
ha, I'm exactly the same
We're five minutes down the road from the Half Moon, and have lived here for two and a half years. No gigs have even come close to tempting us yet though.
Water Rats?
Hmmm?
i had half a guiness in filthy mcnasty's recently
i'm so cool!
Yeah
The promoters get a mixed wrap, but just for the Thermals gig last year.
Black Sheep!?
Was good a few years back. i cant stand going there anymore. also surprised Cargo and Luminaire arent in the list.
the macbeth
rules supreme!
New Cross Inn
No.
Utter Horseshite.
Work for the man.
work for the man?
lol, what are you, 14?
glaring...
..
Boogaloo (Highgate)
Amersham Arms (New Cross)
Not the New Cross Inn PLEASE.
fuck london
i hate the place
half moon
is quality mate. You should have come to see my band play there 6 years ago...
