Any songs that do or have made you cry in the past, in a positive or negative way? As a personal attachment to it or just the song itself?

i dont cry very much but i remember these
song: godspeed - east hastings, reason: fear/drugs
song: arab strap - fucking little bastards, reason: happiness
song: dinosaur jr - out there, reason: sadness
^ 'out there'
made all the sadder because j's singing to his dead father in it :(
i dont normally like guitar heroics
but i defy anyone to find a more emotional solo than that one, his vocals which im not a massive fan of work brilliantly in context too. and church bells ffs, funeraltastic
god damn i love that song
out there
leads off with a wonderous solo, doesnt it?
and the bells towards the end....
end... genius. Just shows what a songwriting talent Mascis can be when he's actually writing about something.
I'm sure I'm not alone in this
but Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens has me riving around on the floor crying like a two year old every time.
Grace Cathedral Park and Down Colourful Hill by Red House Painters get to me. The former because it makes me homesick and reminds me of my childhood, the latter because it's just so fucking depressing, so those as well.
CPD, manchester uni gig
when he played it there was a widespread bawlfest, myself included
Me too
I had a nice old cry at that.
Me too
When he played it at the Barbican, i was squeezing my friends hand so hard i almost broke it whilst blubbing like a baby
josh ritter, thin blue flame.
i have no idea if it was + or -, i just cried. a lot.
every time i've heard that live
there have been at least a few tears.
song to the siren by tim buckley
and Nancy Sinatra with Ladybird
the reasons are the same - their voices are so powerful and they sound like they've lived for 100 years too long
.

Black Star by Radiohead
Nothing makes me cry just hearing it though. I think the lyrics have to affect me at that point and in a certain way...
^ i know that ^
new birds - arab strap
at their gig. i dont even know what the emotion was. Fucking amazing though.
songs i've cried listening to:
'you'll never walk on' by mario lanza. because of my grandpa :(
'positively 4th street' by bob dylan. the realisation of having to play this at my dad's funeral got too much for me.
'androgynous' by the replacements. i don't know why; it think it's just the sentiment in the song, how love knows no bounds and doesn't care what you look like or what you do.
'jesus christ' by brand new. i think it was more to do with the time i heard it and how it just seemed to connect with me. in fact, the entirety of 'the devil & god are raging inside me' connects with me...
i feel quite melancholy now. i want go and lie in a dark room and listen to 'come on die young'.
let down
let down yes
the bit where is goes all jangly and he goes "oneeee dayyyy i amm gonnaaa groww wiinnnggggggsssssss" gets me every time.and like poptimusgrime the whole of "the devil and god..."
Yes. Though for me it's a few moments later.
When he sings 'chemical reaction' like an angel.
The new Panic at the Disco song
^
In a "is this what people call music nowadays" kinda way
nine in the afternoon?
it makes me smile.such a happy song
Joanna Newsom - Only Skin
out of a combination of happiness/sadness/awesomeness. I'm not quite sure what. Also, washer by slint.
Back to the Old House
Smiths
Most of their songs to be honest
Love's An Enigma Part 2
Simple Kid. When the synths/keys/whatever the fuck they are kick in on headphones, I weep like an STI riddled whore.
Mary Margaret O'Hara with The Henrys
Dark Dear Heart....
On Puerto Angel CD. A song to die to.
Zoom
By Fat Larrys Band.
...I was dancing on a table in Finland with a mate. It collapsed -I broke my nose and my eyes went all watery. Not really crying but... Whenever I hear The Third man theme(Anton Karras) I can get a bit misty.
Staring at the sun
yaknow, girl troubles...
And All I need by Radiohead pulls quite a few of my heartstrings.
Suha
by xiu xiu, when I hadn't heard it for a few years.
I know it's over/asleep (smiths) when I was younger.
Mine would be:
Recently;
- Crown Of Love by Arcade Fire
- 22: The Death Of All The Romance by The Dears
(these songs are just very sad, that is all)
In the past;
- 4st 7lb by Manic Street Preachers
(too personal, sorry)
Not sure about cry but the closest would be
Neutral Milk Hotel - Two headed boy part 2
At the risk of encouraging another soap opera..
Pretty much the whole of 'In The Aeroplane..' makes me choke up, but especially 'Holland, 1945'...
WHAT
WHO ARE THESE "MILK" PEOPLE
I DON'T UNDERSTAND YOUR VIEWS AND TASTES WHICH ARE COMPLETELY PERSONAL SO I'M GOING TO MAKE A THREAD
etc.
can't mention NMH without outrage of some sort
Lua
by bright eyes. I think it was just because it's a beautiful song.
There was a country song my dad used to play me when I was younger in the car and I used to stuggle not to cry...
I can't remember what it was. "I will catch you when you fall" with a man and a woman singing... separate thread?
ooooooooooo
good question...
'dead man' by m.ward, which ironically enough says "don't cry" in it. especially in the context of dead man's shoes finale. ooof. powerful.
a lot of songs get me close- 'the chalet lines' by b&s, 'sunken treasure' by wilco, 'how to disappear completely' by radiohead, 'untitled 3' by sigur rós... the list goes on!
I don't think I have cried to a song unless...
I was particularly emotional at the time of hearing it (or a bit out of it).
I cried at the barrowlands when Bob Dylan played Girl from the North Country, I love that song and I was very very happy to hear it sung by Dylan in the barrowlands.
I also cried when listening to any Beatles track after my cousin (mad Beatles fan) died last year!
Antony & The Johnsons - Spiralling
Coldplay - Politik
Garbage - Cup Of Coffee
VNV Nation - Holding On
...it was a break-up; forgive me.
Red Wings by Guillemots
I was driving in my car listening to this song, and the lyrics had this sudden profound meaning for me, and it was if my dad who died years ago, was singing them to me. I balled my eyes out for a long time, which really is something that doesn't happen to me alot.
I wrote to Fyfe from the band about it, he wrote back and was really moved. What a lovely guy!
that
is an awesome story.
for me, the past is a grotesque animal by of montreal is an absolute tearfest.
i listened to it maybe 4 times a day for a while when i was going through a painful breakup. i never got tired of it. it's a really enduring song.
Paul Kelly
"when I first met your mother"
about a guy telling his child about..well you can guess.
Paul Kelly is the greatest songwriter of the modern generation.
Also does a song about Don Bradman, BRILIANT.
nothing really
I don't really cry (which is a shame I think)
Blindblindblind (Silver Mount Zion) came very close last night though, which has to be saying something.
Buggered if I know what though.
YES! to last night's Blindblindblind
God ASMZ know how to do raw emotional power up close and personal
x
too many songs to mention!
Brand New - Play Crack The Sky
have you forgotten
by red house painters.
Innocent when you dream by tom waits.
riches and wonders by the mountain goats.
Steppin out and zoom - tears of happiness haha
animal collective - daffy duck
Daddy's Gone
Glasvegas or maybe the line from Neil Young song Ambulance Blues - "waitresses are crying in the rain - will their boyfriends pass this way again". The saddest line from one of his saddest songs
Lost Cause - Beck
at Brixton Academy, shortly after a break up.. well, maybe just damp eyes.
..
glasvegas-daddys gone
joy division-atmosphere
joy division atmosphere
is the thing that gets me i think.
jeff buckley - hallelujiah in a good way too.
Not crying but just emotional.
Katy Song
By the Red House Painters. Bastards got me good with that one.
hardly getting over it
by husker du
'here is your disguise'
...
Johnny Cash's version of Danny Boy
Haiti by Arcade Fire
Only Skin by Joanna Newsom
Pale Green Things by the mountain Goats

Evaporated by ben folds five.
but then I was crying to a lot of shit because I'm in a "stupid boys are stupid and evil" mood
Anthony & The Johnsons - Hope There's Someone
When he played it at the Mercurys a few years back.
most people have only cried to a few
i've lost count :( The only one that makes me feel awful is Ever Fallen in Love...? which i can't explain. I normally feel great after crying from music though.
Smog - Rock Bottom Riser
Made me cry at ATP last year. But then I was having a really shit time, and was v v v v tired.
Still, he was amazing.
I tend
to avoid Morcheeba "Fear & Love" due to memories of a friends funeral.
Point Of Disgust
by Low made me cry when it was played repeatedly on Skins the other week. I'm not sure if it was because i was coming down on crying over my long lost youth that did it.
Stolen Car by Bruce Springsteen and Broken Heart by Spiritualized have both done it in the past and after Reading Festival 2006, Hot Chips Boy From School set me off because i witnessed my recently exed long term girlfriend with another bloke just before they came on stage.
Quite pathetically
"Ben" by Michael Jackson can bring out the tears for me.
With you on "Ben"
cos it reminds me of that poor little kid they featured on Thats Life back in the day ...
Well, you've got a better reason than me.
I think it's just a combination of the sentiment, the voice and a feeling of childhood melancholy.
Tindersticks - My Sister
... I mean, come on. She went blind at 5. Burnt down the house at 10. Moved in with her abusive teacher at 15. Was dead and buried at 32...
That's chuffing sad.
no lies, just love - bright eyes
it's the line where he says 'if you decide to leave, soon i will follow'. so sad
none, im a man
Any songs made you fart then?
'politik' at glastonbury in 2005
i don't even like coldplay, but when he sang this and changed the words to 'give me weather that does no harm, michael eavis, worthy fa-a-arm, oh, give me mud up to my knees, the best festival in history...' definitely sent a shiver down my spine and a tear or two seeped out. but just the one or two.
yeah
that's a great song actually. i don't like coldplay though
In the Back Seat - Arcade Fire
When she starts wailing at the end...goosebumps and a tear almost every time.
Also...Desired Constallation by Bjork
For the sheer effecting of her voice...
But I normally cry nails...caus I'm a man and shit...*ahem* *sob*
:'(
Brand New 'Limousine'
Elbow Power Blue' made me blub once.
'November Spawned A Monster' (but only live versions) by Morrissey. Got such a powerful ending I usually end up exhausted and teary. Hate the album version though. Meh.
Oh and 'I know it's over' by The Smiths
It's just so sad.
a variety
of Reuben songs nearly make me cry.
Some Mother Do 'Ave 'Em
Nobody Loves You
etc.
i think its my pent up teenage angst or something.
Johnny Cash's version of Hurt
makes me feel like blubbing.
oh yes
that is a cry to number
I second that!
I actually had the biggest lump in my throat on a train home once listening to that version.
BIRDS BY NEIL YOUNG
Yeah, that Johnny Cash version is a killer! BIRDS by Neil Young makes me cry. And so does Faultline by BRMC.
the only song that gets me emotional
Smog-our Annerversary
Radiohead... again...
Pyramid Song is one of the most moving songs I ever did hear! I nearly cried on a bus when i first heard it.
We Have to Say Goodbye
By the Black Heart Procession made me cry on a bus. My g/friend had just left the country for AGES and it ambushed me during an ill-advised shuffle session on my 'pod.
"I fell for you / The way few ever do / And I still wonder why / We have to say goodbye / And you never know this life / Until we have to say goodbye."
I'm tearing up now.
Also...
Emmy the Great - Edward is Deadward
Mind you most of Emmy's songs for that matter.
Songs that have or have had some sort of emotional bearing
Either positive or negative:
Sun Kil Moon - Carry Me, Ohio
Samiam - Stepson
Owen - Skin And Bones
DCFC - We Looked Like Giants
The Notwist - Consequence
Pavement - Grounded
Rocky Votolato - The Light And Sound
Small Brown Bike - Unsung Zero
Statistics - Nobody Knows Your Name
This feels weird to type but...I went through a bit of a rubbish stage at uni, I couldn't be bothered to do anything so I stayed in my room for about two days without talking to anyone etc. On the second night I put PMFS - Up In Them Guts on the cd player. Think I made it to "Dying By Degrees" and I found myself crying, every song just feels like it's full of pain.
Betterman - John Butler Trio
whaling song by valley of giants
it's a post rock epic with a man's story of a penguin battling to survive against killer whales being told over the top. It is seriously heartbreaking.
Oh and 'Goodbye My Lover' by James Blunt. I blub like an infant, but it was a very VERY bad break up and she used to play that song.
Everything I Own by Bread
Listened to it on repeat for about 4 hours when I was 16 and broke up with my first love.
*violins*
