Looking at the 'top 10 new bands' thread it seems Johnny Foreigner is everybody's favourite new band.
But what is it that is so good about them?
Looking at the 'top 10 new bands' thread it seems Johnny Foreigner is everybody's favourite new band.

Hyperactive, ultra poppy, triple fast rock action
in a mid-late 90s style with irregular time signatures galore and fun boy/girl vocals.
Oh and they have lovely art on their records.
kthxbye
They sound like Meneguar
Good enough for me.
I don't think they sound like Meneguar at all
: (
Lol
Do you work for them o_o
Nah, good description :D
they have nice songs
Utterly outrageous rocktageous action x 6
They make my songs sound like custard.
ps.
They prove how bored everyone is with haircut indie.
Well personally
I just like the way they sound.
I think it's an ok reason.
:D
It is!
Thanks,
am just easy to please!
They are
Absolutely awful live, truly one of the worst bands I've seen.
Hmm
This seems to be totally contrary to popular opinion. Going to see them next week so will form an opinion from that instead. EP is excellent.
they
were really good when i saw them a few weeks ago.
you mentalist
Perhaps you saw them on a bad night, but i thought that they were amazing. They made me feel all young and happy to be watching live music.
Maybe you saw a bad gig?
To be honest I've not been over-enamoured by the stuff on their Myspace so far. I don't think it's bad - it just hasn't grabbed me one way or another (although I haven't really made a concerted effort to get into it yet - just listened to a bit here and there) - but a lot of people who seem to have good music taste seem to be saying good things about them so I'll probably try and check them out live sometime before making a definite decision one way or the other.
Come to the DiS tour!
They are playing and more importantly, I'll be there!
You seem to have made some typos
It's 'superb' and 'best'. HTH.
Talking balls
to be fair
i saw them live supporting meneguar and thought it was dire. maybe a bad night and bad sound
i fucking love them on record though, and hopefully i'll be more impressed next time i see them.
I've only seen them live
I thought they were quite good.
they're bloody great
that's what's so good about them!
I saw them supporting Young Knives
at the Classic Grand in Glasgow
They were just a bit shouty and dull
I was far from the only person in the crowd who thought they weren't good, by the end of it there was barely anyone clapping and it was fairly full
To be fair, they had replaced Vampire Weekend who'd pulled out, so no one really wanted to see them anyway
But still, they just seemed a bit... empty?
If i paid
to see Young Knives of my own accord, i probably wouldn't like Jofo either.
ps
You've only made 6 posts and 2 of them have been identical. Did Johnny Foreigner kill your dad or something?
I just happened
to be on two topics where people were raving about them
It does look really bad doesn't it?
I will give them another chance and go listen to their myspace stuff...
Apologies Johnny Foreigner!
I don't think
they liked doing that tour. To be precise, I saw them on their night off it and Kelly said they were rubbish.
Their press bloke messaged me the other day, and I forgot to respond, and I take it that's why my postbox has been starved of JoFo promo today. CURSE YOU, NEURONS.
i think they have much more passion
than vampire weekend for sho'. If you don't like shouty stuff i can imagine them being a bit dull, but they are really great. I think the thing that stands them apart from everybody else is that they're songs are soo much better. So catchy, and perfectly formed. And they're fucking fast. which is great
I think they're ok
remind me a fair bit of Meneguar, I must say. But I also hear a lot of midwest emo styles in them, esp Braid.
"Champagne Girls I Have Known" is a complete tune.
Write more like that, and I'll love them.
when the album hits bruv
WHOOOOSH :)
the newer stuff doesnt really sound that way, even though it's still good
they used to sound a bit more like meneguar/cap'n jazz/lovesick. hectic mid-90s stuff
Their new album is the best thing I've heard this year
True factz.
10/10.
I think they sound like Los Campesinos
But better, possibly. Gareth Campesinos' voice began to grate on me after a while, especially on the album. You Me Dancing is still a keeper though.
But anyway, Johnny Foreigner = bags of potential.
my mate who doesn't know too much 'bout music
said this as well. i don't really see it tbh. similar as in both making quirky pop, thats a bit loud and a bit fast. BUT i think los campesinos! is a lot more structured, their songs are quite conventional while jo-fo are a little more random. love both band though.
They're SO much better than Los Campesinos.
SO much better?
Nah.
Fuck yeah. I don't get LC!, but Vampire Weekend
elude me too.
I'm just going to listen to Urusei Yatsura and pretend it's still 1999.
They sound nothing like Meneguar to me.
And i don't really get the mid 90's comparisons.
As much as i love JF, the have nothing on anyone like Lovesick!
And they sound like Braid? WTF?
I don't know why
but sections of their songs always make me think of Braid. It's one of those inexplicable things.
Hmmmm.
I'll have to listen to them again!
(I think Alexi said he didn't like Braid
But i can't remember)
They definitely sound like Meneguar!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q78uRG01g8k
There are comparisons. Jofo do loads of stuff that don't sound like Meneguar, but there's no doubt that there are comparisons there.
They also sound like early Seafood to me, but heavier and faster.
But this is all GUFF. Who cares who they sound like when they sound so good?
Hmmmmmmmm.
Yeah, i guess it doesn't really matter.
I'm looking forward to seeing them this week.
we played with them
i wasn't convinced by what i heard on their myspace, but live i was totally convinced, and now i think they're ace!
growers.
they are really addictive.
didn't think they were particularly good
or original when i saw them live.
I've not been mega-keen on them when I listen to them at home
but live they're something else. I don't think I've seen a band whose energy was so... infectious?
first time i heard them was two minutes ago
they sound like superchunk and sugar. This is a good thing.
i really like
the energy, the dual vocals and the awesome awesome guitars. It's like an adrenaline shot. And I DEFINITELY hear a lot of midwestern Emo in there, especially Cap'n Jazz and Braid.
I'm obviously missing something then!
it's not like direct copying
but you can definately hear the influence
yeah
I mean, it's more like Braid filtered through twee-pop and spazzy noise, it's definitely less obviously 90s emo. But I really hear the similarity in the vocals and guitars at times.
In fairness, perhaps its that I've just started listening to both bands in the last few days, and I'm totally in love with Frame & Canvas.
1st time listen.
I know this band, they brought out a few albums years ago only then they were called Seafood. I always liked Seafood though...
get Frankie Welfare Boy Age 5, Age of Octeen and Movie Music 1!
they're all better/as good as frame and canvas
they might not flow as well, but there are some stunning songs on those 3 records
cheers, i will do
they definitely sound worth it. Frame & Canvas also has the best lyrics out of any of the 90s emo bands I've listened to, kind of the perfect balance between the abstractness of Cap'n Jazz and early Promise Ring and the directness of bands like the Dismemberment Plan.
You should listen to the van pelt as well!
ok
where to start with them? They don't seem to have a myspazz (or I just can't find it).
JoFo FTW.
^ Somebody didn't stay for the headline band last night
if you can be bothered:
Listen to this:

woops

Ooooh
I likey Meneguar
They were terrible
at the Brudenell, Leeds, a few months back but the MS tunes are ace.
Will have to check them out again when they play with iFR!
They were amazing!
You're tripping.
Oh wait,
Do you mean Johnny Foreigner?
I thought you meant Meneguar.
if he means meneguar he actually has no ears
if he means JF, then i agree.
It must be so tough
knowing that with all the hype around your band, you need to play every gig as good as your best.
they were REALLY bad though
and i love them recorded.
the sound was bad for them (but somehow amazing for Meneguar), and they were sloppy. and no one cared.
Yeah but Meneguar played on the floor,
and we (and JF) weren't allowed to despite my protestations.
I didn't think they were really bad at all. Quite the opposite.
I would hardly say
that they were the antithesis of haircut indie...
Good band, though.
Well
the antithesis of haircut indie would be a huge, fat, bald, trance casualty from the 80's puking lego into his dad's dinner, but you certainly get the idea, at least.
*something about The Twang*
allong with a handfull of other bands
jofo are restoring my faith in new music. (subjective, yes)
to me
they are like an avant-garde Bis, which is a pretty awesome thing to be.
what?
are you being for real?
Anyway, they're really good; also, they don't sound anything like Braid, really, nothing like them. But they do sound very similar to Meneguar and there's an obvious Cap'n Jazz influence (like a lot of bands though). This is all no bad thing.
yeah completely
Bis is the first thing i thought of when i heard them (perhaps it's the boy/girl vocal thing and how the songs are all quite joyful and spiky) but musically their arrangements and dynamics are much more interesting than Bis.
A lot of people seem to be comparing them to quite different bands which i guess can only be a good thing, rather than everyone agreeing on them sounding exactly like one or two other bands.
