It just seems funny to me that even this very website praised this promising young band called The Kooks when they supported Dead 60's in 2006. Yet a couple of years later (post 2 million selling debut), they are castigated. I don't mind people mocking the music, as you say each to their own, but just hating them cos they get played on MTV/Radio 1 or being middle-class etc is a bit dim.
I happen to hate 95% of mainstream music myself, but i try to judge each band objectively (note: i'm not saying anyone else on this fine website doesn't!).

I don't dislike them because they have sold a large number of records or because they've enjoyed a relative amount of success. I dislike them because their music makes me want to do bad things. Real bad things that i shouldn't mention here. But let me tell you; if i hear so much as another Ooh la or a yeahdi yeahdi yeah i'm going to...actually i better not say that, but it won't be good, let me tell you.

I own the debut album... I still think the first two singles are good rattlealong fun. The less said about the big hits since the better, but they do come way down the pecking order in terms of infuriating 'indie' acts.
To be fair to him,
it's very difficult to come off well in a Jools Holland interview, since Jools just seems to have a god-given talent for making people uncomfortable. He interviewed New Order a couple of years ago and spent the whole thing asking about Ian Curtis. You could just see Hooky boiling up with the urge to just shout "WOULD YOU JUST FUCK OFF HOLLAND, HE'S BEEN DEAD FOR TWENTY YEARS, CAN'T YOU JUST GET THE FUCK OVER IT?!?".

i saw
the kooks back in 2006 on that tour with the dead 60's and thought they were quite good...yeah they were poppy etc etc but they had at least got some talent and a certain rawness about them. i think their biggest mistake was signing to virgin who have obviously cleaned up their sound and marketed them towards teenage girls.
as for the interview, it was painful, he looked so lost but to be fair asking them about the rolling stones was harsh...any answer you give will get berated by the millions of diehard fans that know everything about them.
i'm not sticking up for them by the way...they still write dullard pop but i do think they are slightly unfortunate
