Do you want to be in a band? If the answer to that is yes, you can fuck right off. I'm looking for likeminded people who do not give a shit about recognition, fortune and fame.
Look at the 100,000 identical bland electro or jangle-new wave careerist bands out there. Do any of them have anything to say? Do you?
Again, if you're offended already, you can go away. I'm looking for people who don't use 'musician' as a flag to describe themself, would never dream of telling people they were 'in a band', do not care for one minute about what is cool or current or what could be 'successful'.
I cannot really play anything. I do not have a particular goal in mind. The result could be anything from a writing workshop to some entity making a godawful racket that actually says something to a political movement. No posturing. No trust fund punks. I need people who care to an extent more than the world in general will accept. And I want them to be willing to at least stand up and try to say something about it.
Remember. No careerists. No 'in-a-band' people. I'm not being elitist, I'm just demonstrating some of the things I feel are wrong with music at the moment. If you agree, you'll know what I mean. My profile has a great deal of music taste (or lack of, I don't care) on it.
there are no political movements available
aside from 'flail ineffectually'
this sort of idea leads to my favourite bands having terrible supports and i wish everyone would grow up and admit defeat basically.
^
well, maybe i put too strong an angle on the word 'political', but i don't know what your favourite bands are. It is either possible that you have a point in that i may be being a complete wanker, or it is also possible that your favourite bands are boring careerist masturbation.
im just bein a cynical and drunk cunt
and I wish you well with this thing you want to start but i standby what i said about the support bands. specifically that a lot of the more experimental groups that tour will get a local band who are seen as experimentative to open for them. More often than not they are 6th form anarchists smashing the system with their 30 minute drone dirge and stick animation . you may disagree with me but i think that talent is an important part of music, not the be all and end all but a big fucking chunk of it. Ideas and an anti-capitalist agenda make for good discussions but shit bands.
my favourite bands are: sebadoh, mclusky, mastodon, godspeed judge for thineself about the careerist thing as im not particularly arsed :D
good choice
of favourite bands (well, apart from mastodon, but that's just my opinion), but I maintain that musicianship is optional. Songwriting and musicianship are completely independent of each other, and as far as I'm concerned, the former is more important. But I am a gang of four and ikara colt obsessive so that may be predictable.
The 'sixth form anarchist' type of stuff is precisely the type of posturing that i was ranting against in the original post...a lot of that kind of thing is regurgitation of cliches, whereas i'm looking for people who generally pay too much attention (and analysis) to everything. Have no anti-capitalist agenda, as systems of government are too vague and theoretical concepts to debate while making music, or even grass-roots politics or anything at all, really.
Cynicism is good, and as you probably guessed, I have been imbibing as well. Better a negative reaction or at least an interesting one than just a 'yeah, whatever' or 'that sounds good'.
Patronise Mode :
On
you cant have listened to leviathon or blood mountain and dismissed mastodon so out of hand. of course they have the metal cliches going on (metal itself is one big bleeding, shouting cliche) but they are very very good songwriters and transcend the genre.
Off
i was sort of joining the songwriting and musicianship under the umbrella of talent and agree with the latter being more important
Mastodon are also quite excellent.
er former not latter, innit
after going into patronise mode as well....
well
maybe i should try it (as in putting mastodon into my ears) again some time, but it never worked for me yet... at least it's a suggestion.
then again
i shouldn't have to try and justify this too much, if this is the kind of thing that people want to do, they'll know who they are.
I'll join
I'm into music and geeking out on computers.
I can't play anything, I think I can sing.
I make music. That's about it. I'm listening to a demo disc Why? did.
They sound embarrassing and crude. I love it, I love them.
this is meant in no way to offend
but ive always wondered how people who cant play any instruments make music... do you invent melodies and stuff? how do you remember them? how can you imagine more than one part at a time?
unless you mean you record found sound and manipulate it and stuff which is a valid instrument as any other imo
Ask George Pringle!
:D
I would adore to start/join something like this
Leeds seems void of anything worthwhile or anyone to join forces with.
anybody who like numbers stations is a good person in my eyes
And, and,
maybe we could read the observer together sometime :D
to be honest
your abit to good looking for me.
I kind of agree with your sentiment
but you sound like a complete tool.
I could do your branding
This could definitely have cross-marketing potential.
Have you killed any squirrels lately?
Sorry, I thought you were Mark E Smith for a minute.
Anyway, kudos for wanting to do something different. Too many haircuts and "ooh! look! I'm on a stage!" twats out there.
Hey, I like Trellick Tower too.
Been to Balfron Tower in Poplar?
You can go up that one. No cunty concierge in poplar, that's guaranteed.
