I've heard pieces of their stuff and what I have heard sounds quite good - any fans of theirs on here? Any album(s) to recommend?

nah
they're well shit innit
weird
'it's my life' has just this moment come up on my shuffle. Thats a bit of an 80's classic. Other than that, they then completely changed direction, and Spirit of Eden is meant to be a pretty good and influential album, although i haven't heard it myself
Spirit of Eden
is 50% very good, but I find it hard to get past the first half to be honest. Interesting ideas but something about his voice ultimately makes me want to gouge out my own eyes.
Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden
are their greatest. But even their older more pop-orientated albums are still pretty great for what they are.
Laughing Stock is one of my all time favourites.
They're wonderful
pretty intense though, you have to be in the right mood. I seem to listen to The Colour of Spring most (probably because it's the only one I own) but of the others I've downloaded, The Party's Over and It's My Life are probably the most pop (the latter's my favourite of those two), and Laughing Stock and Spirit Of Eden are more experimental (the former of these is my favourite - it almost sounds like a template for Do Make Say Think's sound). I suppose The Colour of Spring sits in the middle of the poppier albums and the experimental ones, so that's probably why I like it the most.
Oh - and it turns out I've just basically explained Talk Talk's chronology without even knowing the albums were released in that order.
Talk Talk
First album - poor man's Duran Duran avoid.
Second album - 'The Party's Over'. 80's synth-tastic but the emergence of very good pop songs, notably 'It's My Life'.
Third album - 'The Colour Of Spring'. Classic English pastoral rock pop album, mostly acoustic feel, still song based, but stretching out; includes 'Life's What You Make it'. If you like the latest Goldfrapp album, you'll like this.
Fourth album - 'Spirit Of Eden'. Abandons trad song structure altogether, first track takes up side one etc. Total "feel" album - well worth investigating if you like Sigur Ros etc.
Fifth album - 'Laughing Stock'. Sign to Verve, disappear up their own arse.
Mark Hollis' solo album is pretty good if you like very quiet, acoustic minimalism.
How can you like
Spirit of Eden and his self-titled, and have such a low opinion of laughing stock? It's not that different to either.
The Party's Over
is the 1st album not 2nd, that was called It's My Life... sorry to be a pedant!
Whilst I prefer The Colour of Spring & Spirit of Eden I think there's some great stuff on all the albums though, even The Party's Over as Talk Talk was the song that got me into them in the 1st place, yes I am an old bastard!
Awesome band, and I love Hollis' solo album too, it's up there with Billy MacKenzie's!
Right, I really should be working...
:D
hello - i love talk talk! my last.fm is all about them at the moment. good times. i'm trapped in a talk talk phase! sorry this isn't exactly helpful but i was very excited to see their name mentioned!
i totally thought you started this thread
:D
All of them
Including the synth-pop ones.
'Spirit of Eden'
...is one of the best albums ever made.
Fact.
Interestingly, it features no EQ.
Also
It makes me really happy to see so much appreciation for this band on DiS!
They are
surely one of the greatest bands ever. Their last three albums are all phenomenal, probably increasing in "phenomenalness" chronologically.
'After The Flood' on Laughing Stock is possibly one of the greatest recordings ever. The outro to 'I Believe In You' on Spirit of Eden makes me cry every time.
Talk Talk
Best band ever. Soft of.
Spirit of Eden is great
but I havnt listened to it in ages cos as someone said up top, its a very mood album, you've got to be in the right place for it.
Mark Hollis almost got beaten up one of the Kemps in Spandeau Ballet cos he was sounding off about how dreadful the entire 80's synth pop stuff was and saying that both there bands were evil for peddling that stuff. This is before the Kemps were ihe Krays otherwise they would probably have fucked him up.
my fave
Spirit of Eden and Colour of Spring are easily my favorites of ALL time, the latter being easier listening.
laughing Stock is good but very difficult , it only took me 10 years to get into it.
I know a lad who confirmed the madness of the Spirit of Eden recording, he knew the engineer, it took them years to do,drugs being a major issue. After the one Hollis solo CD he apparently retired from all music, which is a massive shame.
Are they the band that changed the most from 80's pop synth to abstract random sounds?
on the Guardian blog about Talk Talk t'other day
one of the posters said that Hollis' brother had died of a drug overdose before Spirit, and so Hollis had become quite puritanical about the various forms of drug taking. Dunno what the truth about it is, but it's an angle worth considering
Also, in the same article a very intelligent, probably incredibly sexy poster was talking about how Hollis' solo album was very much the work of a man at the end of his career. The lyrical themes of finality and retrospective disappointment are unavoidable, and pretty much rule out the possibility of Hollis ever releasing another album
I like Spirit of Eden (espescially I believe in you)
but I also find his voice unfavourable. Kinda ruins it a bit.
Tim Frise-Green
Produced 'ferment' by Catherine Wheel and is now being produced by Robin Guthrie as Heligoland. Unless there are two Heligolands, which is unlikely.
Laughing Stock
The best album ever made that i've heard.
Anyone who doesn't understand it isn't worth listening to.
^ this
Making music as incredible as 'Laughing Stock' would simply not be possible for virtually every other band in the world.
Blimey
I was only expecting two or three replies.
I may give Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock a try to start with - thanks for the tips.
Talk Talk
Probably my favourite band ever, get both Colour Of Spring and Spirit of Eden!
"new grass"
excellent.
Reckoner...
From In Rainbows is basically a Fisher Price version of New Grass. Which is also sampled on Rabbit In Your Headlights.
Anyway...
I wrote this ages ago - http://www.stylusmagazine.com/articles/weekly_article/stranded-talk-talk-spirit-of-eden.htm
I'd start with The Colour Of Spring and then work through Spirit to Laughing Stock. If you can find a cheap copy of Asides Besides, a b-sides and singles comp, get that too - some awesome b-sides from all eras; Pictures of Bernadette, It's Getting Late In The Evening, For What It's Worth, John Cope. Awesome.
If you cannot feel 'Spirit Of Eden'
you have pretty much lost your soul.
Laughing Stock
what an album! Spirit of Eden and Colour of Spring I remember being pretty good too
yeah, radiohead is doing talk talk forgery
but its a good language.
Hmmmm... I wouldn't go that far.
They do have a few decent ideas of their own, to say the least.
But... I've had Colour of Spring and Spirit Of Eden for ages, and love them.
But this thread remeinded me to download Laughing Stock, which I did, and I'm listening to it now. It's rather good.
So thanks for starting this thread.
