in reflection of following this band when i was 16 is:
1st album (s/t) - amazing raw pop songs, nothing too heavy, really simple indie with a garage type feel to it. takes a while longer to warm to it than the others, but once it hooks you, that's it, you'll like it forever.
2nd album (the new fellas) - more commercial pop songs, they mastered writing things for a wider audience. and somewhat relevant for younger people ("when i'm drunk i can be an asshole, that don't mean i've got no class no"), NOT amazingly groundbreaking lyrics but fun. these also get played much easier in a club. it was better produced (obviously) and lost a little of the more garage-y feeling, but made up for it in pop.
3rd album (men's needs, women's needs, whatever) - NOW this is a lot lot more commercial and it sounds it. again better produced than the last 2, and the sounds are louder, the guitar riffs a little bit more epic, they were very ambitious. a couple of the tracks are really quiet, but personally i find them quite pretentious. these songs will hook you far quicker than the other 2 albums but they've been played to death and they lose their appeal very quickly. again, played in clubs a lot. i forget the amount of times i've heard "men's needs", but maybe that's just me.
to conclude:
first album best, but less accessible
second album, better pop songs, but more to the mainstream
third album, more epic and massively overplayed to the extent it loses it's appeal.
But, for me, they're just another band that have somehow managed to slip through the meat and potato rock net, like Razorlight, The Kooks and Joe cocking Lean and his merry band.
and from what ive seen at their gigs it is a mix of lads and other people. But they are a lot better than other lad bands, although i would agree they are pants wettingly good.
in september, it was 50/50, and i agree they are sliiightly more laddish than some indie bands, but not "lad rock". if i'm being pedantic i wouldn't really call them rock... but it's all swings and roundabouts and opinion. the fact a lot of the indie pop nights i see around have them on the playlist should count against the laddishness? i don't know, i guess i'm biased.
as The Enemy and their ilk, and people seem to conveniently forget that they came out of the same libertines.org scene as The Others, The Paddingtons and Thee Unstrung.
They write short catchy guitar/pop songs which a lot of people happen to relate to....
To me they still sound like a breath of fresh air 4-5 years after first coming on the scene...
A great Lo-Fi record, considering the majority of it was produced by themselves with the help of Bobby Conn. With relatiely little promotion the record did enough to earn them a second album. It has some amazing pop songs on there which might nescarilly(sp) never chart, but should appeal to DiS'ers everywhere.
2nd Album: 'The New Fellas'
A MUCH MUCH MUCH angrier record than that of the first. Just read the lyrics of 'Hey Scenesters' 'Mirror Kissers' and 'Martell' and you will see what I'm getting at. The album as mentioned above may or may not have been written for a wider audience but I think Bernard Butler and predominantly Edwyn Collins found the perfect Cribs sound for this album.
Album # 3 'Mens Needs, Womens Needs Whatever'
Obviously their boldest album to date, bearing in mind they had a rookie produce it (Alex Kapranos). Still glimpses of fury from the New Fellas days with tracks like 'I've Tried Everything' and 'Our Bovine Public' which I believe draw fans like myself to this band.
The main reason why they are pulling such a croud at the moment is predominantly because they give a shit and seemingly project this everynight of a tour unlike some bands who only make effort in cities that count (hello London and Manchester).
completely disagree with those saying they don't get the 'hype', but i'm too lazy to have a massive argument! They're doing well because they put the energy in and they've got enough talent to pull it off imo. Sleep time soon i think!
unpretentious, three minute
bursts of catchy, no nonsense indie pop?
Pretty much that.
The tunes are good and the lyrics are good to shout along with
^ this
and the first album <3
^^^
the first album is bliss
exactly.
nothing at all
I didn't notice the fuss.
But i haven't got telly nor the net at home
they sing/speak in the loveliest most endearing accents.
i'm a simpleton me.
(y)
Just because a bunch of folk like them
doesn't mean you have to like them...
fail.
.
I don't understand...?
I hate when people use shitty internet put downs. I'd rather they just explain what they're trying to say with, you know, more words.
i agree
twattish, nonsensical comment
i hated
that Scenesters song but the singles off the second album are really quite good.
hey scenesters
is off the second album. i think you mean the singles off the third album. in which case i agree, i think they've all been really good
ah right
yeah that's what I mean.
my opinion

read "maybe it's just leeds" for "maybe it's just me"
*
also "since" instead of when in the first sentence.
i am a retard.
while we are on the subject
the quote from the second album isnt actually on the second album.
is it not?
my itunes liiiies.
they released it as a single just after the second album
i think it was backed with an album track. It might have been on the second album if it was re released though i dunno.
you're right
hey scensters 7"?
originally yeah
then i think they released at as a proper single later on
I don't
get the adoration either.
They might be exciting live,
and they've got a couple of decent tunes.
But, for me, they're just another band that have somehow managed to slip through the meat and potato rock net, like Razorlight, The Kooks and Joe cocking Lean and his merry band.
hmmmm
I've heard all their albums, own the first 2. They are good, but not quite worth the hype.
The Cribs fall somewhere between
terrible and horribly average.
I hate them.
On the NME awards, the guys voice was awful.
thats a bit of a silly reason to hate someone
you are missing some ears
and love for good, short, loud poppy songs
Lad rock for those
that choose not to wear Burberry and Stone Island. A few good songs, but certainly nothing worth getting a wet crotch over.
not lad rock at all.
!!
it is a bit laddish
and from what ive seen at their gigs it is a mix of lads and other people. But they are a lot better than other lad bands, although i would agree they are pants wettingly good.

Musically they're in the same vein
as The Enemy and their ilk, and people seem to conveniently forget that they came out of the same libertines.org scene as The Others, The Paddingtons and Thee Unstrung.
Yeah but they make catchy pop songs, rather than attempting to say something massive liek the enemy
and arent complete dicks like the enemy.
I dont mind the Paddingtons either.
domgourlay
your post has made me fucking angry. you entertain youself as a jounralist and you couldn't be more wrong about a band.

Couple of good songs
but I don't get the hype personally. Too jangly for the likes of me.
and before any lays into me
I have the first two albums.
'Another Number' is great.
In answer to your question
a life.
Lot's of people don't rate them very highly. People that do like them enjoy them for the same reason.
Rant begins:

the end.

good rant
thanks pinhead.
thought it was totally needed. god bless a bit of alcohol and loyalty.
no problemo
i'm ever so slightly razzed but i can't be bothered with a rant of my own
you get what I mean though
the Cribs aren't exactly a flash in the pan so to speak?!
no waiiii!!
completely disagree with those saying they don't get the 'hype', but i'm too lazy to have a massive argument! They're doing well because they put the energy in and they've got enough talent to pull it off imo. Sleep time soon i think!
superb
good sum up. i'm glad you're my best friend. see you soon boi!
