Where to start with The Smiths?

I love Bigmouth Strikes Again, it's one of the most listened to songs on my ipod, but I've never been able to quite 'get' any of The Smiths other stuff.

So yeah, where should I start, albums/compilations-wise with The Smiths?

Once you've heard one,

you've heard them all.

Mmm..not true

The Queen is Dead. Try that

once you've read one wrightylew post

you've read them all

BUY THE FIRST RECORD.

If you like it buy the second, if not, sell it.

i think the 2nd albumish stuff is the best

personally.
After that it all gets a little bit more dyer.
I think hatful of horrows is a good compilation to start off with, or if looknig for an album the the queen is dead maybe.

if i spelt dyer wrong in that context

first off it was done metaphorically, as in dyer = shit = danny dyer.
and secondly what would be the correct spelling of it, dier?

dire

Dire.

Oh yeahh

The queen is dead

ugh

Did anyone else like

Ringleader of the Tormentors?

Yes.

Also, start off with either Hatful of Hollow or Queen Is Dead.

Hatful of Hollow

Strangeways, The Queen Is Dead.

P.S.

Louder Than Bombs.

There's only one place to start with The Smiths

"The Smiths" this and REM's Murmur were just about all I listened to in 1983.

The Queen Is Dead

possibly Hatful of Hollow

There's a good singles collection

that'll help you bluff your way through a Smiths conversation. If that floats your boat, I guess you can just move on from there (The Queen is Dead is nearly always touted as their best).

The Smiths:

Culture Club with better lyrics.

please stop

Didn't you say something along the lines of "the 80s produced no good music" or something? Therefore there's a pretty low likelihood that you can reasonably acknowledge and appreciate the smiths.

Kasabian:

Oasis with worse lyrics.

I didn't think that was actually possible, but they've achieved the impossible!

The Smiths:

Culture Club with better lyrics, miles better guitar, better drums, better bass and a fuck load better singer. No worries, just get "The Smiths" and get on with life.

Apologies that comment was aimed at Wrightylew

and appeared in the wrong place.

^ there is no hope for youth of today...

you haven't lived you philistine. You probably eat burgers and still go to school. and speak that really weird language that isn't English on Bebo.

meat is murder

is my favourite

listening to "the smiths" for the first time in years right now

not really sure why i've deprived myself of it's beauty for so long. start with that. all the smiths records up to "strangeways here we come" are great but don't quite have the awkward magic of the debut.

"how soon is now ?"

of course.

Don't get Hatful of Hollow first

there are probably too many songs on it to "get in to" all at once. Try The Queen is Dead or one of the singles compilations.
