I'm picking up an eerie link between Drowned in Sound and Noel Gallagher...
DiS really doesn't like Noel. And somehow, every time he crops up in their news stories, the wordsmith geniuses at DiS HQ seem to work on some sort of template.
The template is focused around sarcasm, irony, and attempted wit to try and belittle Gallagher and his comments. This IS the case. Every. Single. Time.
But why do we hate Noel so much? Its because apparently, he's been peddling the same, tired formula for aaaaaages!
Hmmm. So I'm wondering. Is DiS' predictable, lazy, monotonous, samey journalism on Oasis some sort of intended irony? Ie. Noel can get away with not having any new ideas, and so can we!
Somehow... I'm not sure it is!
...
You're actually a genius, aren't you?
Hmmm....just to counteract your argument
Wrighty....

Read the comments below.
Everyone's fucking astonished that you haven't slagged them off.
Moreover, you don't do the news do you? You're like the token reviewer they've got to cater for those of us with lesser tastes.
I do the occasional news story
such as this...
http://drownedinsound.com/articles/3163423
which is as far removed from an Oasis type of band as is as possible to be...
That's an objective story though isn't it?
A four year old could write a story about someone touring as long as they're given the dates. Its not as if it requires any editorial input.
No but I wouldn't promote
any band or artist in a positive light that I didn't rate personally either.
My point is that your assumption that I'm some kind of "token writer for people who like lesser kinds of music" is very wide of the mark, to say the least.
Thank you for positing that
if only to see some classic archive from The_Glory
Only some users wrighty, only some users
O you mean the journalism
Yea, kind of true, I didnt find it very funny this time.
noel is right about most things
but about this he definitely is wrong.
wrightylew:
the Noel Gallagher of the boards
No.
Some people still like Noel Gallagher.
Truly cutting.
I suppose I won't be receiving any invites to any DiS events anytime soon then. :(
haha!
except that's not true
See also people who slag off:
The Clash,
The Sex Pistols,
The Who.
Noel Gallagher
plays in a band that made one and a half very good albums.
It's not a case of "pick on the rockstar because he's big" and I've always hated it if people do that (and argued about it plenty on here). I even went to the Maine Road and Knebworth shows (the former was great, the latter showed the first signs of it all going wrong, but it had a great support bill).
You're just going to have to deal with the fact that a lot of people feel he spouts a lot of nonsense, and the fact that whenever he speaks, it gets lots of publicity, means it gets talked about a lot. It is not a vendetta. Definitely Maybe is a great record. Any more questions?
Whether or not you agree with him isn't relevant.
The major criticism directed at Noel is the fact he needs to CHANGE THE RECORD, both music-wise and with what he says.
But Kev Khavras only seems to know one song, too. It goes like this:
"Oasis buffoon, Noel Gallagher, claims he doesn't like *a band DiS does*...
... The songwriter, who hasn't done anything interesting since 1995, is AT IT AGAIN, spouting the same old crap...
...Does anyone care?"
i agree entirely with damian
i even went to maine road (i lived in fallowfield at the time).
thankfully i avoided knebworth.
I'm probably in the minority
but I don't hate Noel Gallagher. I love the first two Oasis records, albeit less than I did when I was 13/14.
Those comments about hip-hop/Glastonbury are ridiculous though. I hate the prominence that guitar-led rock'roll continues to hold in the music press.
It's a tired argument, but the majority of all rock music is only deemed to be 'valid' (critical reception, media soundbedding, commercial success, gig attendance) because it leans so heavily on its own traditions. Look at that ridiculous Raconteurs record.
Bloated by his own success, the music that Noel Gallagher once wrote - which, whether he was blatantly ripping it off or not, sounded lean and vital in the same way Jack White did when he wasn't making guest appearances on Rolling Stones DVDs - has come to epitomise that inward disdain. Imagine if it was the other way round and Jay-Z was saying guitar music was 'wrong' and it doesn't belong at this:
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/49908-rakim-de-la-soul-gza-murs-play-paid-dues-series
or in the other - mostly arcane, to me - places rap music tends to exist. Same with dance, dub, jazz, whatever. I thought the idea of insular genres had been shown up as ridiculous years ago.
It's the comments, really, in this instance. I was at a party with some DiSsers recently and my attempt to play Definitely Maybe was intercepted. I can understand that, as anyone who sticks on Definitely Maybe at a party in 2008 is either very drunk or has some horrible, wayward laddish intent, (the former).
I'm not gonna change my ideas about someone who hasn't changed their ideas since 1990 just for the sake of it.
Separate the man from his music and it's easy to see that Gallagher's just turned into a dullard, no matter how bang on his comments were about Arctic Monkeys and the O2 arena.
and he has a new record to promote
and true to every previous album, they seem to have started doing so by making 'out there' or debatable comments about other massive artists.
That's just because bands tend to get interviewed more before a new record.
He would've said the same thing regardless.
I love Oasis...
and Noel G can be as funny as fuck but they have so many fans who turn it into a them and us issue. 'if you don't like Oasis you're a cunt' etc. Why these fans have such a complex is beyond me, when any word against them or the Gallaghers is not allowed. Noel G is wrong here, but he's right a lot of the time. The Gallaghers are always going to divide opinion, thats half their appeal.
I like Oasis but see why people don't, i like loads of DIS acclaimed bands also. They're not mutually exclusive. Liking Oasis doesn't mean i'm now going to sink 10 pints of stella, vote bnp then go home and beat my girlfriend with my new skinhead haircut.
How do you beat your girlfriend with a haircut?
I imagine there's a lot of Glaswegian kissing.
More seriously, Oasis seem to have fans in the same way that football teams do: tribal, devoted, and will keep on spending their money regardless of whatever's served up.
Hence the them and us attitude. Like football fans, the worse your teams' performance, the pricklier you are about them and your obsession with them. If Oasis had just released the best album ever, then their fans wouldn't be such pricks; you wouldn't get much of a rise out of a football fan if their team had just won the league.
Sadly, Oasis have been fighting relagation for a long time now. Hence the aggression.
What a very good analogy
Very true
i just hate it when I get lumped into the Oasis fans category just because i like them.
I'm not going to go and start saying 'Oasis best band ever, best band in the country etc etc. Because that would be elbow.
It seems that way just because they're so popular.
Practically the same thing was said about Radiohead and their fans, I think that type of thing will always happen when bands are that big.
Since everyone is commenting on the news article
and on this thread, it seems obvious Oasis is still a relevant band.
My question is :
WHY ?
I think the Gallagher boys are hilarious
they say crazy shit that makes for funny commentary... so it's a win-win!
