Ocean Beach

but personally i think Mark Kozelek's best record is his solo album, What's Next To The Moon.

Actually,

scratch Ocean Beach, I'd go with the s/t 1993 one. It's got Grace Cathedral Park and New Jersey on, and they're undeniable.

I thought this was going to get zero replies

as a protest to my woeful typos in the original post. So I decided to just buy one.

I went for that very album! :)

Start with those

But Old Ramon is the best RHP album by miles.

'Smokey' and 'Void' on there are pretty much incredible.

I think

Songs For A Blue Guitar, simply for All Mixed Up.

^^^^

this - best song EVER

^ there are some stunning songs on there

Priest Alley Song, Trailways and Revelation Big Sur are all brilliant.

Tricky One

They're all good in their own way. Although for a first album, don't go with Red House Painters 2 (aka 'Bridge') or 'Down Colorful Hill' because they're less easygoing (and value for money) than others. If you want the best lyrically, then you wanna go for the last three 'Old Ramon', 'Songs for a Blue Guitar' and 'Ocean Beach'. Beware that What's Next to the Moon, although amazing, is all AC/DC covers so don't get on board with that expecting lyrical genius.

I think the best lyrics he ever wrote were to 'Cruiser' and 'Void' although neither album version does them justice, which is why I think rooting out the two live albums might actually be the best place to start.

Down Colourful Hill and Red House Painters

are definitely the best for me personally.

The others stray too close to being merely nice acoustic albums.

Old Ramon

is ace too.

Red House Painters

is so the best.

self titled

with the rollercoaster on the front.

It's stunning - a pop masterpiece that takes you through a range of emotions; overjoyed, confused, sad. Sounds; chilled, visceral, anthemic...arghhh, can't say enough about it.

the rollercoaster one

then Down Colourful Hill

Try 'Retrospecitve'

Tis a very good compilation and will let you choose a good starting point with albums after a few listens.

I disagree

It's not a good compilation in my opinion, and it hindered, rather than helped me getting into them

Im a fan of Ocean Beach..

but my favourite song is Brockwell Park. That song is so pretty.
