Has this been mentioned on here yet? Apparently the French are pretty pissed about the whole thing, as the song he'll be singing (Divine, from his latest album) is mainly sung in English
This is actually really cool news. Tellier ftw!

only saw it today
when I read the story on the BBC site about the French MP being annoyed.
Pretty cool. A totally unexpected choice from the French, who usually go with a big sweeping ballad sung by a woman in an evening gown.
And also a very un-Eurovision choice! It will be quite interesting to see how he does on the night.
this was announced weeks ago.
and it's insane! It'll either completely destroy his credibility as an artist.
Or it's exactly what eurovision needs. I haven't decided yet.
But he has no chance of winning. Eurovision is political, not a competition of talent.
???
Political?
So the fact that the last twelve winners have been Serbia, Finland, Greece, Ukraine, Turkey, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, Sweden, Israel, The UK and Ireland is due to politics?
And even if it was political why wouldn't France win? They have got the second highest number of Eurovision wins after Ireland.
^this post is so serious because the one above is so stupid.
^
france haven't won for over 30 years.
the last time the uk won was back in 1997.
Do you genuinely believe that the UK have a chance in hell of winning at the moment given our political status as American arse lickers? Of course it's political.
Oh and winners are always completely naff, so you'd think we'd have a chance given the 'type' of talent we always seem to put forward.
Ok - lets do this. Lets have a debate about Eurovision.
The year the UK got nil point with Jemini was 2003, just after the invasion of Iraq yes. BUT THE SONG WAS SHIT! They were so off key. Malta only got 4 points that year and didn't invade anybody. The reason was because it was shit also.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7pz3d0bgc8
Also in 2003 Norway had supported the war and was preparing to demploy troops to Iraq and they came 4th in the competition. Poland were one of the INVADING countries and they came 7th out of 26 including 10 points from anti-war Germany.
Also Lordi won in 2006. Do you think it had more to do with the fact it was a ridiculous song for Eurovision or because in 2005 Finland voted to uphold the then 19 year old global whaling ban?
hahaha.. dude, points for the factualness!
fair play man. ok well i can concede it is most certainly true that eurovision isn't PURE politics, it is however, extremely influenced by politics. And i genuinely believe the UK have no chance in hell of winning for a good few years. permission to perforate me with a blunt fork if Andy wins this year.
If we put a good enough song forward we'd win.
I fail to believe that the millions of Europeans who vote during the show see themselves as actors in geo-politics.
i don't think "good enough" is the right phrase
but if we got something which combined tunefulness with performance and novelty or uniqueness, we might have a chance. And although we're certainly hindered by not being in any real voting axis, i don't think the war has much to do with it
war is a separate issue to politics surely!
politics certainly encompasses more than 'war'!!
Politics
This list of the last 12 winners:
"Serbia, Finland, Greece, Ukraine, Turkey, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, Sweden, Israel, The UK and Ireland"
Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine - they all get votes from their neighbours in Eastern Europe.
Finland, Sweden, Denmark - all Scandanavian chums. Also links to Estonia/Latvia. And Finland had Lordi.
The UK are less likely to win cos noone in Europe particularly likes us, or needs to curry favour.
I guess the songs come in to it somewhere, but the voting patterns are definitely based on politics.
But we've won it the second most times.
Behind Ireland (not many Irish on the Continent) and the same number as the French (everyone loves them) and Luxembourg (!) the power players of Europe.
But these votes are mostly done by viewers phone calls now. I doubt the UK are handicapped because few people in Europe sitting watching their tele "needs to curry favour" with us.
Your point is completely stupid. The Eurovision is not Gordon Brown and Nicolai Sarkozy. When Chancellor Merkel and Ehud Olmert meet they do not discuss Israel's participation in the contest. European leaders do not conclude trade deals on the agreement that they give each other 12 points.
Sometimes close countries give each high points but there's no agreement between them. Scenarios such as Greece and Cyprus's frequent exchange of 12 points are because those countries share the same music industry and language, and artists who are popular in one country are popular in the other.
Yeah, Eurovision Conspiracy Theory is well sane.
PS "The voting patterns are definitely based on politics" Please demonstrate a voting pattern over the years that is based on Politics.
a bird once said
"Bloc vote, shock vote"
a big sweeping ballad sung by a woman in an evening gown...
you're too nice with les Fatals Picards from last year...
who would u choose
sebastien tellier or andy "i was on x-factor" abrams?
i kind of don't think i want sebastien to win it. It's not exactly something to add to the resume is
..
a think adding a win at Eurovision to your resume
is better than adding a loss at Eurovision to it.
it's a risky game he is playing.
.
brilliant
completely amazing.
whoever thinks it'll damage his credibility has no sense, it's a big camp pop song and it deserves to win.
what exactly does he win though?
what will it actually do for him, if he wins? I think he can do a lot more for eurovision, than eurovision can do for him.
To be savagely frank,
entering or even winning the Eurovision isn't going to damage credibility when there was none in the first place. He's only known in this country for 'La Ritournelle' and for good reason - it's pretty much his only A* song. He's considered something of a novelty/parody act in France as it is.
His new album is absolutely brilliant.
Universe has plenty more contributions than just 'la ritournelle'.
And 'Sexuality' is a superb album, and i should expect no less, when half of the daft punk duo had a considerable amount of input into its production.
Regardless of how he is perceived in France, novelty/parody (is this true?)... i believe him to be an exceptional artist. Bloody can't wait to see him at Bestival.
ps.
Try:
'ballade du georges'
'roche'
'Kilometer'
'universe'
'sexual sportswear'
'universe'
(for starters)
You're preaching to the choir, matey.
I own two of his albums. I'm just all too aware of how little he's known outside of France.
Did anyone see the report about this on BBC News 24?
The French minister appears to feel genuine anger over it. Their basically pissed off that their culture is being diminished by the fact that, for (apparently) the first time ever, a French representative will not be singing in his native tongue (or, as the minister kept repeating, "our ONLY official language!!!")
they should
fucking get a grip that they're the first country ever to actually have someone talented in Eurovision.
But have you noticed
that the reporting of it is just "here is a Frenchman, he likes porn and he's in Eurovision, ha ha ha"? It's not like I expect them to run through his whole back catalogue, but there's no reference to his reputation or Guy Manuel De Homem-Christo's involvement that might give the choice some focus.
It is Eurovision, though
Even if Leonard fucking Cohen entered, he'd still be derided as a camp stereotype by the mainstream press.
talented ?
He's actually boring, quite shit, and more and more of a media whore.
We've had much more good singers and songs in the 60s...
for lyle
lyle, don't really care if you think seb is talented or good or not - its all subjective. but media whore is well out of order. seb was asked about eurovision, he said yes, this circus blows up and we've had literally hundreds of media requests for interviews and he's doing none of them. he's playing a gig in milan tonight and not getting involved in this french v english nonsense. a media whore who have jumped into the centre of the ring yes? got a feeling you've got a chip on your shoulder about him yes? i think you comment negatively everytime he is mentioned on dis - give it a rest eh?
steve lucky number
You keep a close eye about everything
it's said about him on DiS...
Yes, I've posted a few negative comments ( as I've done for Camille, SoKo and as I'll do for TheDo, all highly overrated ) but not everytime ( too much threads about him for my own taste ), because I really think there's hundreds of guys more interesting than him in France.
But he's always been with the right crowd, meaning he always got a lot of press, a lot more than his "success" should have given him...
^^^pretty much what he said
If he's going to get anywhere at Eurovision,
he'll need a new backing singer.

Sebastien Tellier - Une Heure
listen from 03:29 onwards - that is BANG out of tune. But quite funny.
(and by that i mean what steveluckynumber said!!)
At the end of the day
after sweeping all this political voting in Eurovision etc aside, it's a contest with musical content that shouldn't be taken seriously, it's kitsch and cheesy in a great way and I'll be fully backing him as well as the turkey :)
aye
http://www.godisinthetvzine.co.uk/content/content_detail.php?id=2445&type=Singles
He won't win but he's good...
I won't say anything
as I'm apparently not allowed to...
say something, lyle!
I'll resist the urge.
Or the Tellier fanclub ( half of them being in his label ) won't be nice with me !
yep I'm gona root for Tellier
I love his albums. I doubt he has a chance in hell of winning mind even if I havent heard any onf the other tunes involved.
Does anyone else really wish that flight of the concords where european so they could enter and do a feature length special on their fight to win eurovsion?
