Expecting bands to be good/bad based on members' past bands and being surprised

I found the Rival Schools album in my parents' loft the other day. I was expecting it to be quite decent but only had faint memories. It actually really sounded like the Stereophonics. Maybe it was just the voice but I was so very disappointed given that I used to like Gorilla Biscuits quite a lot.

Examples of people in bad bands forming much better bands?

united by fate

is amazing :)

in the positive corner

lightspeed champion, and leading by a country mile in the negative : the mars volta

Stereo-what-ics?!?

rival schools sound like THE STEREOPHONICS?!?!? what fresh outrage is this?!? it's an immense album, imo.

though it's probably not as good if you're trying to score cool points from other people with obscure band t-shirts on.

it really does

I was horrified. I didn't even notice any particularly good songs. I will give it another go though.

they sounded like bush

so overrated

Bush > Stereophonics

or Stereophonics > Bush.
I can't decide.

the second bush album

if you try and forget you are listening to bush, is actually alright, some interesting guitar stuff going on

totally agreed

won't do nothing for your indie cool but that's a great album

The Jeevas > Kula Shaker

But I'm sure to be alone on this one...

audioslave

are surely the kings of good bands turning into an awful one

so many people in hardcore bands

who go off and do rubbish acoustic singer songwriter stuff.

in a similar vein, i was sure Head Automatica were going to be amazing.

Anything where Daryl Palumbo is involved, regardless of genre, surely must be. But then they were poop. Shame.

ed fitz

then foals.

oh dear.

good for you

it's poop though

DeSalvo

The side project of Idlewild's second guitarist, I wasn't positively or negatively surprised. I was just surprised. (Come on! They sound nothing like Idlewild)

He was in Desalvo

long before he was in Idlewild. Desalvo are an incredible band and in absolutely no way an "Idlewild side project". What a stupid thing to say.

Wings

... the band The Beatles could have been

:D

neutral milk hotel

i think the last thing jeff mangum was supposed to be doing was making weird field recordings of romanian villages and the like.
and if thats not gonna be absolute bollocks then i dont know what is

fugazi > the evens

theyre ok tho, dont get me wrong

zombie zombie

i thought they'd be good cos it was herman dune. very different but rubbish rubbish rubbish.

Squirrel bait to Slint (and gastr del sol). Little bit obscure?

Fieldy's Dreams

was fucking ace

Korn

were fucking shit

I LIKE THIS POST BEST.

xxxxx

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

<3 me too!

raconteurs

i think their 1st akbums ace, dunno bout the 2nd tho, not heard it yet

Pearl Jam...

...are alot better than Mother Love Bone that's for sure.

Sure to get loads of stick here.

But so far I haven't heard anything that impresses me by any of the Blood Brothers successing projects.

nope,

i'm down with that

Except

Jaguar Love being outrageously good.

Ladyfuzz >>>> Soho Dolls

Ladyfuzz were fantastic - Yet their guitar/bass player Matt joined Soho Dolls who just sound contrived in their attempt to make this sexycool electro pop which Goldfrapp did a whole lot better a few years ago.

He is wasted in that band i think. But i suppose he needs to pay the bills or something.

Smashing Pumpkins > Zwan > Smashing Pumpkins post Zwan

Zwan were better than I expected, the new Pumpkins material was as bad as I expected

True dat.

I was

hoping for more from new end original.

Not bad but not as good as it promised.

"former member of"

When I see those words on cd covers I always shy away.

Led Zeppelin featuring Jimmy Page

Former member of the Yardbirds?

tim kinsella

POSITIVE EXAMPLE

But,

Tim Kinsella has consistantly been making good music for over a decade...

The Weakerthans

I appreciate a whole lot more than Propagandhi.

The Good, the Band and The Queen?

Good..but not as good as i thought it'd be

bloke from busted....now in fightstar

i was suprised when i heard fightstars cover of 'leper messiah', which is great, and then hearing a cover of 'breaking the law' which is even better! and i liked their first single.....swimming in the flood.... a great tune i thought also. jesus, i think im gay for fightstar.
