Shop assistant endorses music purchase shock horror

Why do shop assistants feel the need to praise your choice of music ? I've just had
"yeah man, good choice have you heard their earlier stuff, apparently they were influenced by radiohead"

from a bearded guy with his shirt undone showing his hairy chest. I'm not sure which bit I'm more offended by to be honest.. Does this annoy anyone else ? (the patronising well done for your purchase not the hairy chest bit)

i'd quite like

someone to engage me in such a conversation, personally.

I'm not against the odd conversation

but this particular one had quite a patronising tone..

^ignore this post

:D

I agree with guntrip. I'd rather be served by someone who wants to talk about music than feel like I'm at a supermarket checkout.

Wouldn't it be great if supermarket staff were like people in record shops? "Broccoli, eh? It's OK, but I preferred the earlier stuff. If you like this you should check out the curly kale..."

I could totally do this

I'm really not happy with Cinnamon Grahams changing their name, they were much better before

I got told by one of the guys in Jumbo records

that the Slint album I was buying (Tweez) was the best album ever made. I kept quiet.

sarcasm non ?

.

Yes

Double negatives are confusing enough without adding the complication of a second language, thank you very much

I loved talking to customers at MVC.

MVC was shit though,

you had to pass the time somehow I suppose..

It was shit from the customers point of view

but being paid to dick around, tell people to just fuck off to HMV around the corner if they didn't like our service, stealing stock, watching zombie films out back during lunch, free stuff from Greggs a few doors down makes for good employment

I WORKED AT MVC!!!!!!!!

i loved talking to customers too. maybe we were colleagues?

OMGZ!!!

I doubt it, I worked in Staines, but lets totally be friends anyway!

i think it's really nice

mostly because I get a bit intimidated when going to record shops, as to what the super-cool staff are thinking of my purchases.

When someone's OVERLY enthusiastic, it gets a bit much and you wonder whether they're shocked anyone but them (especiall y the likes of you) has heard of the band.

But generally, I think it's cool.

One dark night...

me and Homesick Alien were buying a bottle of Mad Dog or two when the lady behind the till commended us on our choice and stated that the drink was an excellent colour.

was she

pissed ?

I don't think so.

Let's face it, you don't need to be trollyed to enjoy a fine vintage such as Mad Dog.

It's not a choice thing though

They're told to complement purchases, at least, my friend who works in HMV has to.

Got to say

I like it when you get some chat with them they are there all day and maybe they are just happy to see someone is buying some good music they like too. Maybe all they get is folk buying pish or maybe they are just the chatty type either way I’m sure three seconds of chat aint going to kill.

you're upset about someone paying you a compliment?

fucking hell are you hard to please.

who said anything about

being upset ? I find the fake coolness some people in record shops ooze a little annoying thats all.

That man has to stand behind the counter all ruddy day

Someone comes in and he actually approves of their choices, tries to brighten up both his and your day, and you're all 'Why are you doing this?'

Heaven forbid that people should SPEAK TO EACH OTHER.

no no, missing the point

genuine interest yes / fake coolness annoying.

IS THAT CLEAR NOW ?

Funnily enough...

if it's somewhere like HMV it's a little strange but if it's a small independant record shop and the person behind the till knows their stuff then it's very enjoyable.

I love this!

I hate it when they look over it disapprovingly. I felt really happy when the man in Rough Trade complimented my CDs, they don't normally!

Jesus

just imagine if I worked in a record store. I'd shoot myself after a few hours.

You would HATE Resident

everyone else who is normal loves it, I love it when the store im sipporting actually CARES about music.

supporting*

I'm in Resident all the time

and I don't think they've once complimented my purchases! I must have poor taste :{

The girl in HMV who sold me Magnolia

complimented me on buying a decent movie with some disparaging comment about most of the customer purchases there.

I'm sure my other purchase was just a piece of shit action movie but hey ho.

I don't have anything against people saying stuff to me but I come over as immensely rude when they do because my surprise renders me speechless.

Can someone bottle this surprise

so we can feed it to Theo when he's down the pub with us? Thanks x

They already have...

it's called choloroform

Guy from my record shop usually say :

it's shit, you'll probably like it...

This never happens to me

except when I bought The Soft Bulletin in HMV at lunchtime on the day it came out and the assistant remarked that they'd already had to order more copies in.

i used to love talking to people about music when i worked in MVC

leave me alone. you're one of the mean ones.

.

what a stupid post. the guy was most probably just being nice. you have thrown that niceness back in his face by being snide about it on the internet. you win, i guess.....

I win because you obviously

haven't read my other comments. Twat.

I quite often do this at work.

I'm always a bit surprised when people borrow stuff I like.

He sounds dreamy....

I dont mind it if its genuine, infact i ejoy it, it makes me feel dead smug

I bought four records in a second hand record shop the other day

the bloke was talking for about 10 minutes to me :D
it was great

Silly thread

I don't see how this could possibly annoy you.

The best looks I get in Zavvi are ones of "don't look at me, I have no soul".

Once got complimented

on buying a Manic Street Preachers album, went in the shop next day, bought a Shania Twain album from the same girl - not such a warm reception that time.

I always liked talking about music

when I worked in a record shop.

I made a few friends just doing that.

aww! i think it's sweet.

i once bought three albums in Virgin and the guy nearly leaped over the counter to hug me, such was his happiness to see my choices. I don't think it's any more patronising than anything else!

banter with strangers is great!

why are we all so bloody dismissive of it? and everyone jumps to accusations of 'oh they're being fake'. just have a bloody conversation! it's refreshing once in a while!

a lot of people who work in record stores

LOVE music, but have to sell rabbie williams records 8 hours a day. when the rare occasion comes that they serve a customer who is buying something that hasn't been through 12 autotuners, they are overcome with delirious happiness and will sometimes mutter a few words to said customer to express this happiness.

the last time i was in a record shop

i had a good discussion with a pretty girl shop assistant about micah p. hinson. i'd always said his name like "my-kah", but she said his name more like "mih-kah". i've changed the way i say that name now.

i don't have conversations like this irl about records and stuff. only when i'm in record shops. bring it on, i say.

but you were right

it is my-kah! change back.

p.s. response to this thread. i want to know what shop it was too. when ppl used to get out good cd's from my library i used to always be happy and comment - just to break the tedium!
