I prefer headphones
My mate prefers speaker

Who is correct? I always like the better sound quality with headphones and they don't make you go deaf as much as speakers apparently.

Anyway, what do you prefer? A question probably shouldn't have bothered asking ........

Depends...

On my mood. Headphones for indulgence, speakers for physicality.

unfortunately

I have continuous tinnitus in my left ear, which I find more noticeable when I'm wearing headphones. So speakers. But actually I've always preferred listening to music on speakers anyway, because although the sound on headphones is very detailed, it isn't very well-balanced.

...

Good headphones driven with proper amplification are VERY well-balanced! Most headphone sockets in most stereos / hi-fi amps are afterthoughts and don't supply the correct type of signal and power to drive headphones best. Hence I have a dedicated headphone amplifier for the job!

I spent the weekend at a friend's house listening to some of these - http://www.naim-audio.com/products/dbl.html

But I do love my headphones... I use a pair of these - http://reviews.cnet.com/headphones/akg-k-601/4505-7877_7-31649805.html

^^^

I also suffer from tinnitus which gets a lot worse after using headphones. Hence when people moan about the difference in quality between mp3 and cd I just agree with them but can't spot it myself due to poor hearing from too many gigs over the years.

Usualy speakers

though if i have a REALLY REALLY good pair of headphones near by... probably that... I dunno I just dont like stuff over my ears. Beasides the sound system in my room is more then enough for me whilst the headphones are just... average.

I thought

wearing headphones affects your hearing more than listening to music on speakers? But I prefer headphones, I like being in my own little musical world while Birmingham chavs are screeching on the bus.

While

I love to be in my little musical world away from the Doncaster chavs screeching on the bus, nothing really compares to getting a buzz off cheap vodka and partying to good music on speakers. simple and juvenile fun. the exception being Burial, which has to be listened to on headphones

depends how good your speakers are

but generally speakers are much more enjoyable to listen to

exactly this.

I used to think headphones, until last year I got a decent hi-fi system and that changed my opinion. Decent speakers with a good cd player and amp make such a difference and I haven't listened to music on headphones at home since.

umm

headphones for low volumes...you can still hear all the details even when they are quiet.

however
for mega loudness it has to be speakers. the sound is just way more engulfing and powerful

i no and then they broke

lots of colons accompanied by open brackets

Speakers...

except for when i'm on the move. Two speakers strapped to my ears could be somewhat cumbersome

headphones

though my hifi is pretty good, i hardly ever get the visceral effect of listening to a beautiful sounding piece of music. With (good) headphones it's so much more detailed, so much more enveloping, and you get a much better idea of the bigger picture of the music (whilst ambient sounds and unsuitable positioning/sound space can have an adverse effect when listening through speakers)

No opinion on music is set in stone until you've listened to it on headphones - it's the ultimate test of quality

With speakers it is all about the posistioning

luckily my room is a perfect square and the layout of my room does allow for almost perfect spacing for all 5 speakers although it could still be improved :(

I remember when i had the center speaker near my bed, garunteed headache n u couldnt hear the seperate channels, only the center

use both at once

headphones for the detail, speakers for the physical feeling

This is one of the best parts of Djing

Headphones on for clarity and then also feeling the bass.

But if i had to choose speakers always win!

Headphones

its how its intended.

This sounds really good

I'll have to try it, thanks

Speakers.

Everytime. I recently got some Klipsch speakers, and the bass is simply monumental.

speakers

though i do love listening to music on headphones, i don't really like earphones, but have never had a pair of anywhere near decent earphones.

It depends on the music

some albums really are made for headphones (Girls can tell/The Earth is not a cold dead place), some albums are better blasted out over speakers (Ziggy Stardust, Back in Black).

I need some new speakers. I've got some old beasts (Toshiba SS-33's) that really should be put out to pasture after ten years of indie rock abuse.

Decent quality floorstanders for about a ton? Anyone?

go 2nd hand

if you look in pawn shops you can find some bargains, often they don't realise what they've got which is why I got some 70s Celestion Ditton 33s which are absolutely amazing, for £90.
ha, just remembered, I asked what wattage they were and the woman in the shop said (in a fabulous Wrexham accent) "well, we've run them with a 700W amp and they sound great".
Really?
So yeah, look for the stiggiest pawn shop, they're often idiots.

I am deaf to bass in my left ear.

So my headphones are set up on the mixer to louder there, and as such, it is better to listen to. The speakers I have are not sophisticated enough.

Headphones are fucking crap.

Really good speakers are the best.

Headphones are awkward and I hate them.

Speakers

pretty much every time, unless people are about that don't want music on, or I'm DJing then I kida need them to cue up th next record.

depends on volume

I live in a terraced house so although I have a pair of very nice tannoy speakers I can't play anything too loud on them. Whereas on headphones I can go mad...

I love putting on Earth 2 on vinyl and lying on the floor next to the speakers and feeling the bass through the floor. Superb.

Headphones

unless there good quality speakers in an spacey room played loudly

Headphones

are rubbish. Speakkkers everytime. Music is meant to be listening to on speakers. Bands who reference mixes on headphones are bell whiffs.

i would prefer speakers

but i mostly listen to music on the go... i.e. bus/train/walking. so i don't have much choice in the matter.

Mostly speakers atm

but I'm moving into a small room in a terrace house and I work stupid hours so end up awake late... so I'll be buying myself a pair of Grado SR-80s when I move.

speakers every time

I just don't like the fact that I can't hear anything but music, that should only be confined to the studio + concert.

Speakers

because you can walk around and stuff. Headphones can be nice for stuff that has cool stereo effects, but you're kind of stuck in one place and you can't sing along.

Bare in mind this is the first time I've given it any thought at all.

Speakers, easy.

With headphones you don't feel the air move- I feel the music's a little bit too close- with half decent speakers and a good volume the range of sound is much greater- particularly with bass.

Has to be speakers

The fact is that with headphones you essentially just get the left and right channels fed into your ears. However with well placed, good quality speakers you get a stereo effect which is much different. Thats why its nearly impossible to do a good quality stereo mix wearing headphones.

Also, hadphones are never going to be able to hit the 'brown note'.
