they seemed very tense & nervous especially early on, which was a bit strange as they have played the Union Chapel before. Alan Sparhawk seemed a lot more withdrawn and disconnected than on previous occasions.
I thought that Mimi was really annoyed with Alan but it made it quite funny at times. She kept giving him really exasperated/dirty looks. I bet he'd forgotten to hang out the washing or something. Brilliant, brilliant gig now - third time I've seen them at Union Chapel and it *is* their home.
I wonder if he'll pass his probation once Alan and Mimi see the tapes. He does jiggle around and throw what can only be called shapes an awful lot. You would never see Zak or the last lad do that sort of thing.

although murderer wasnt nearly as spine tingling as I was expecting, and I didnt like anything involving drum machines or pre recorded loops (I dont go to a low gig to hear sound), but yeah when theyre good theyre amazing, shame there was no over the ocean
i think you dont have too much grounds to complain if you go and see low on a tour promoting 'drums and guns' for them to be using "fucking drum machines". last night theyd devolved the sound quite a bit since the last shepherds bush show, but even so, may be best to avoid seeing them live.
plus i thought you had met before to be honest. oh, you replying to me just reminded me i need to book train tickets! (i swear i don't just see the words "ATP" tattooed on your forehead, honest :D)
Murderer was an incredible opener and from that point on they had me transfixed. Great set and I'm continually amazed by just how beautiful the mesh of their two voices is. So happy they closed with Last Snowstorm Of The Year as well.
i actually thought alan seemed more at ease than previous times I've seen them. (in fact the first time i saw them at the union chapel about five years ago he practically stormed out at the end of the set).
when a band has such an amazing back catalogue, you're always going to walk away from the gig thinking "what, no over the ocean / two step" etc but what they did play was amazing as usual.
the girl requesting "violence" seemed a bit unhinged, yeah! we tried to get them to play an unseasonal version of "just like christmas", just because it's actually one of my favourite songs of theirs and i don't think they'll ever play a christmas show over here.
SPOTTED (kind of): there was a guy there on the fourth row, centre set of pews, right hand side as you faced the stage, in a red hat, who i'm sure i recognise. i think he's a t4 music presenter but he could have been someone off here or maybe just a guy who is always at the same gigs as me.
are two words I wouldn't use to describe last night. The Spitz and Primavera last year were and I'm sure some of you who have posted above were at those gigs. I love the band but they certainly seemed (to me) to be going through the motions last night. That said 'Murderer' was great.
he played really well and had a really great "feel" for the songs and accentuated the dynamics really ell. Thought he was great - and he must have been working very hard to learn their back catalogue as he seemed very relaxed during the encore when everyone demands their favourite song - I say well done that man!
for learning such an extensive back catalogue and playing it with some feeling. but the faces! and the moves! and the stomping! i definitely accidentaLOLled at one stage.
that was good fun!
i was right at the front. on the left side pew things.
be nice to people with lice.
I was about 4 rows back on the left
My friend was the one that requested 'be nice to people with lice.'
god that girl requesting
violence was annoying.
if it was someone from here i take that back of course.
someone should have requested Words or Over The Ocean
she was directly behind me.
quite hott though.
*goosebumps*
i was spellbound.
I think I held my breath
for the entire set
low low low low low low
low low low low low low
apple bottom jeans
boots with the fur
the whole club was lookin at her
she hit the flo, next thing u kno
shawty got
were you on the door?
.
yup
i was the guy.
i thought you looked familiar.
ITS JAMIE SUMMERS FROM THE INTERNET!
shoulda said
'YOU'RE JAMIE SUMMERS FROM THE INTERNETS'
and given me a thrill.
They played Last Snowstorm of the Year!
That alone left me feeling absurdly happy.
It was very good but
they seemed very tense & nervous especially early on, which was a bit strange as they have played the Union Chapel before. Alan Sparhawk seemed a lot more withdrawn and disconnected than on previous occasions.
good.
i want tense painful mournful horrific emotion
I'm not complaining
it was just different compared to previous Low gigs. The dark cloud only lifted when Alan played his song about lice.
Oi Summers! are you the kind gent
who showed me and my broken leg to the empty pews?
If so hai!
uuuum no
if he was bald then it would have been another atp person. if not then it would have been a union chapel person.
yes I agree
I thought that Mimi was really annoyed with Alan but it made it quite funny at times. She kept giving him really exasperated/dirty looks. I bet he'd forgotten to hang out the washing or something. Brilliant, brilliant gig now - third time I've seen them at Union Chapel and it *is* their home.

I wonder if he'll pass his probation once Alan and Mimi see the tapes. He does jiggle around and throw what can only be called shapes an awful lot. You would never see Zak or the last lad do that sort of thing.

Last Snowstorm of the Year
There's always one
And I am always grateful - nice one, mattkjdfk
really good
although murderer wasnt nearly as spine tingling as I was expecting, and I didnt like anything involving drum machines or pre recorded loops (I dont go to a low gig to hear sound), but yeah when theyre good theyre amazing, shame there was no over the ocean
I agree
with what you weren't brave enough to say. Are they past it? Why won't he let Mimi sing more?
Low was always best when Mimi sang.
Is it really necessary to have:
a) fucking drum machines, or
b) guitar solos.
Ego killed Low.
Of course
Let's not let Low evolve their sound at all. Alan should only ever play four chords.
Whatever.
And Mimi sang plenty. Alan has always been the "lead" vocalist on most songs.
pretty much
I always admired how little they evolved in the past
even so
i think you dont have too much grounds to complain if you go and see low on a tour promoting 'drums and guns' for them to be using "fucking drum machines". last night theyd devolved the sound quite a bit since the last shepherds bush show, but even so, may be best to avoid seeing them live.
Balls
That was as flawless a set I have seen them perform. Absolutely at the top of their game.
Is it my imagination
or did they play 'Sandinista' to a loop of the intro to 'Ohio' by Crosby Stills Nash & Young?
If so, fuck this naysaying about using samples. That was brilliant.
Yes It Was A Loop Of Ohio
And I thought it worked rather well
Fucking hell indeed.
Mrs. Doom isn't a fan of low in the slightest, and even she was impressed.
Also, was it just me or did anyone else have an itchy head after the lice song?
that was very very good!
the pews hurt my bum though :(
I totally saw you
I should have said hello but was in hangover hell and wasn't very chatty.
i saw you too!
haha, don't worry, i was with my girlfriend and she's scared enough that i know people from the internet after taking her to rota :D
but yes, say hello next time!
i wondered if that was
your girlfriend. i felt bad after for not saying proper 'hi i am jamie', but then its your fault for being bad boyfriend. INTRODUCTIONS ARE YOUR JOB.
i really can't do introductions!
plus i thought you had met before to be honest. oh, you replying to me just reminded me i need to book train tickets! (i swear i don't just see the words "ATP" tattooed on your forehead, honest :D)
hmm she looked vaguely familiar
does she post on here?
she doesn't
i'm sure you met somewhere before...
aye
top, top gig. beautiful surroundings, beautiful acoustics, beautiful songa, beautiful singings.
just perfect.
except they didn't play 'monkey','california' or 'everybody's song' but you can't have everything in life.
SO GOOD
Murderer was an incredible opener and from that point on they had me transfixed. Great set and I'm continually amazed by just how beautiful the mesh of their two voices is. So happy they closed with Last Snowstorm Of The Year as well.
no way
did they play shame and last snowstorm :(
by the way
I have a spare ticket for Retribution Gospel Choir tomorrow evening.
Anyone want it?
my friend
got a ticket for that thinking it was Low playing an extra date. He fails, massively.
it was amazing wasn't it?
i actually thought alan seemed more at ease than previous times I've seen them. (in fact the first time i saw them at the union chapel about five years ago he practically stormed out at the end of the set).
when a band has such an amazing back catalogue, you're always going to walk away from the gig thinking "what, no over the ocean / two step" etc but what they did play was amazing as usual.

Haha
the requests at the end were quite amusing.
My friend wanted to sit right at the front, so luckily we go there before doors opened, and we ended up in front in the middle pew.
It was such a good show. I particularly enjoyed the way that Mimi could rein in Alan just by a glance.
we got there at about 6.55
so we were about six rows from the back.
SPOTTED (kind of): there was a guy there on the fourth row, centre set of pews, right hand side as you faced the stage, in a red hat, who i'm sure i recognise. i think he's a t4 music presenter but he could have been someone off here or maybe just a guy who is always at the same gigs as me.
brett anderson was there
or at least he was on the guestlist...but i left after a bit to go watch so dont know if he turned up
also
and this was the only real downside... what is with thier new bassist? he looked like lurch from the addams family pulling jazz/sex faces.
he was rather distracting
but I was right in front of Alan Sparhawk, so I just watched him instead!
Mmm.. Amazing and Perfect
are two words I wouldn't use to describe last night. The Spitz and Primavera last year were and I'm sure some of you who have posted above were at those gigs. I love the band but they certainly seemed (to me) to be going through the motions last night. That said 'Murderer' was great.
he was a really good bassist
but man, he had SOME MOVES ON HIM
I thought
he played really well and had a really great "feel" for the songs and accentuated the dynamics really ell. Thought he was great - and he must have been working very hard to learn their back catalogue as he seemed very relaxed during the encore when everyone demands their favourite song - I say well done that man!
no - i mean fair play to him
for learning such an extensive back catalogue and playing it with some feeling. but the faces! and the moves! and the stomping! i definitely accidentaLOLled at one stage.
yeah absolutely no need for the bassist
with his crazy horse footstomps.
Any one know what alan said that prompted mimis "so not cool" mutter
so not cool
Alan was asking if anyone had any marijuana for a couple of people in the entourage.
what was the song
that had 'mercy' in the chorus and was quite funky? was that the new song?
most likely
'point of disgust' off of trust. done slightly differently than the version on the album.
anyone have be nice to people with lice??????
I'd be so grateful for the mp3 - pleeeeease :)
oh and i was sooooo happy with some of their song choices
for one they played my favouritest low song - little argument with myself - which i was thinking if i would shout out a request that woud be it...
Basically great gig :)
*bump*
one more ask for the lice song - anyone have it? It would really make my day :)
it's on a compilation
http://paperbagrecords.com/catalogue/see-you-on-the-moon
a worthwhile purchase.
but here's a live version from cambridge in 2005:
