for the drums... I bought some a couple of months ago and I love re-learning how to play but I have housemates and live in a terraced house. Anyway I don't even really know if it really matters which ones I get :S but please some advice + they need to be not too expensive.
I don't know anyone who plays the drums really which is why I have to ask advice, I may just get lessons so I can talk to someone about such issues.
Any advice would be appreciated...

I have the bog standard placcy ones

they are fine (nice and quiet) although it doesn't really feel the same as hitting the actual heads. Apparently these are supposed to feel more 'realistic'

but I dunno.

So do you

just put them on top of the skins or what? I really am a n00b... I might get lessons just to ask about things like this.

I mean TOMORROW

like with the plastic ones do you just place them on top and these mesh ones you have to actually put them on?

Aye

you just lie them on top of the heads. The mesh ones replace the heads.

I need these too.

We used to play fairly loud in my garage. Just loads of blues jams. I loved it so much, it was like the highlight of the weekend.

Then some old neighbour from about five minutes walk away came and complained. We told him we wouldn't stop playing until the legally specified curfew which is 11pm.

He was like 'I know someone in the council, so I'll be able to stop you.' and we just laughed him off the doorstep.

Then we got a letter from the council, horribly worded, threatening an £11,000 fine.

Just cover the heads

with tea towels or towels. Pads are a total waste of money.

Really?

Depends

I use old shirts but they probably don't work as effectively as your housemates/neighbours might like.

Whatever you do though, don't get the QT muffler things. I was wading through little bits of black rubber for ages.

what about the cymbals?

I am very poor atm so this towel option is looking good.

For sure.

It's not perfect but really cheap. I prefer it to pads as it still sounds like a drum kit as opposed to a dead thud. In terms of the bass drum I filled mine with a blanket. Also go and have a word with the neighbors and see if there's a time when they wouldn't mind you playing. Most people are reasonably phlegmatic about it as long as you don't take the piss.

the neighbours are really good about it

they said they don't really mind... I just can't help but feel really conscious when making so much noise, which can take the enjoyment out of it.

Don't worry about it.

The joy of drumming is taking out some frustration on a kit. Or practice for a couple of hours a day. Play along to a cd. For cymbals, I used to cut a hole in a bit of fabric and thread it over the stand. Go to poundland and buy a shit load of tea towels and just experiment with what works best.

I am going to go buy some tea towels tomorrow

thank you for your advice and everyone else in the thread :D

No probs.

Good luck etc.
