It's kind of like the Panzer vs the Sherman in WW2
The X Wing is amazing but more expensize to produce. The TIE is cheap as chips but shit. It'll all come down to the Rebels being able to destroy TIEs faster than the Galactic Empire can make them
The original X-Wing will always be my favourite.
Sure, the graphics weren't the best and in fact, I had to play most of it on pretty low-detail thanks to my lowly 486 SX 20MHz machine...But it strayed least from the original films with new spaceship designs and the iMuse soundtrack was excellent the way it matched the onscreen action.
My only regret was they never did that third Hoth-based expansion pack I'm sure they intended. My medal chest clearly had a space for it and B-Wing left it clearly ready to run with those missions next.

they generally need an escourt of A-Wings. A-Wings are pretty poo, more on a par with tie fighters.

The Expanded Unbiverse talks about at least 2 others that i can think of (and i haven't read all the books anyway) including one thats in the X-Wing series which was buried on Coruscant.
I'm also pretty sure Grand Moff whatsisface has one in the books too.

Grand Moff Tarkin dies in Star Wars. And Thrawn definitely isn't in such a SSD because he would be a MASSIVE obvious target and no one knows he exists. Bear in mind that none of the Star Destroyers work well without a central Force control in those books, so clearly no one would be stupid enough to run a SSD.

Well I'm going by Timothy Zahn's trilogy
I can't remember the name but the one where Thrawn was the main bad guy and there are all those anti-Force lizards.
It's explained near the beginning that with the death of The Emperor the Imperial Fleet immediately loses its power and effectiveness. The point being that he uses the Force at all times to keep the crews efficient, allowing a ship with 30,000+ personnel to actually function.
This is backed up by the film where the Rebels fail to make any headway in the space battle prior to the death of the Emperor and after that they totally go to pieces (even though none of them logically are aware he is dead).
Hence, running a SSD is a big deal. Anyway, I was always talking about the films only. :D

anyway, there are, as toby said, 4 or 5 other Super Star Destroyers mentioned in the expanded universe. the Lusankya and one in the Black Fleet (see the Yventha trilogy) were the only ones operational during Palpatine's reign i think. Admiral Daala had one afterwards called the Night Hammer, which she renames the Knight Hammer as she prepares for an attack on the Jedi Academy which is a pun that only works in English so raises a number of canonicity questions and um abandon reply.

Toby remembers it. Read that trilogy again and it's explained in the text how it's meant to work. I'm just saying what the books explained and the final battle in ROTJ appears to back up.
Whether, in fact, such a spacecraft would have any difficulty functioning efficiently with all the personnel working on it isn't really here nor there: it must be accepted for those novels to really make sense.

i read pretty much all of them
up to the Yuuzhan Vong invasion stuff. i actually think that's got the best overall plot ideas, but the first book was so awful i just gave up on them. i just read all the synopsis on here: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page, LITERALLY the best website ever.

i've read those books a number of times
and i have pretty much no idea what you're talking about.
the Imperial fleet lost its power after Endor because in the sense of loss of both the Emperor, Vader and the Executor (Vader's Super Star Destroyer) left a power vacuum. the Empire always encouraged backstabbing and ruthless paths to power, so it totally fell apart when the one thing that held it together, the Emperor, was killed. it's already explained in A New Hope that when the Emperor dissolves the Imperial Senate he puts individual regions under the direct control of the Moffs, who are loyal only to him. so with him gone, they squabble amongst themselves. This is documented considerably in the Expanded Universe fiction as well.
it logically makes no sense as well - the emperor distrusted other force users to the extent that he had them all hunted down. why would he put one on each ship?

Look, when they get the Jedi Master dude on board Thrawn uses him precisely to make the Star Destroyer work much more effectively and the fleet has a massive victory, the like of which hadn't been seen since the Emperor was around.

i do remember that, but in no way was it stated that it was a norm. it's akin to having an exceptionally skilled commander.
it's also pretty nycg the only time that the idea appears in the literature - thrawn was already making considerable inroads against the Republic before C'bath came back, as do other skilled commanders (Daala, Paelleon).

Ok, well the pc game is excellent
but in reality it would be the X-wing, as in the films Tie Fighters are not fitted with photon torpedos. Also the guidence system is easier to use on an X-Wing. Sheild system stronger on the aft on the X-Wing.
