Most preposterous simile in lyrical history?

let's take a closer look at those lyrics

"I've been walkin' these streets so long
Singin' the same old song
I know every crack in these dirty sidewalks of Broadway
Where hustle's the name of the game
And nice guys get washed away like the snow and the rain
There's been a load of compromisin'
On the road to my horizon
But I'm gonna be where the lights are shinin' on me

Like a rhinestone cowboy
Riding out on a horse in a star-spangled rodeo
Like a rhinestone cowboy
Getting cards and letters from people I don't even know
And offers comin' over the phone"

Please through your contributions on the pile for THE MOST PREPOSTEROUS SIMILE IN LYRICAL HISTORY

when I say 'through'

I obviously mean 'throw', or perhaps even 'toss'

I don't know...

But I do know that I love Glenn Campbell

good tune

but those lyrics are fucked up.

"Witchita Lineman"

is the only song I ever Karaoked.

"You used me like an ashtray heart!"

Captain Beefheart from "Ashtray Heart" on "Doc At The Radar Station"

dylan

on his much vaunted simple twist of fate dylan puts this crap verse out;
He hears the ticking of the clocks
And walks along with a parrot that talks,
Hunts her down by the waterfront docks where the sailers all come in.
Maybe she'll pick him out again, how long must he wait
Once more for a simple twist of fate.

Whats the parrot about apart from lazy rhyming

I spy neither a metaphor

nor a simile

and the Parrot was most likely real ie Dylan was describing a real crazy eccentric of the dockside underworld and his pet

either that or creating a composite archetype from pirate lore and Captain Hook

Really?

I thought it was about his cock

well, I won't say you're wrong

but I've scanned the full lyrics and I can't find any hint of an image in reference to circumcision so I don't think so

Erm, I think you should re-read the lyrics...

they've got circumcision all over them

...

This song was my dad's party piece at any wedding, wake or miscellaneous social function featuring a karoke machine. He was pretty good too.

I say 'was' - he's not dead, I've just banned karoke from my life.

:'D

9/10

...

...

You're both on The List.

can no one find me an equally preposterous metaphor?

there must be loads...

this one springs to mind

"you made me feel
Yeah, you made me feel
Shiny and new

Like a virgin
Touched for the very first time"

oops simile*

damn!

Lovecats...

we move like cagey tigers
oh we couldn't get closer than this
the way we walk
the way we talk
the way we stalk
the way we kiss
we slip through the streets
while everyone sleeps
getting bigger and sleeker
and wider and brighter
we bite and scratch and scream all night
let's go and throw
all the songs we know...

nice try

but isn't it caged*

which makes sense

also, I really like it

Glen Campbell played guitar on Pet Sounds

he's well cool !!

No Cagey

We move like 'cagey' (as in shifty)

thats not ridiculous

its more of an extended metaphor, that actually is pretty conventional

and...

you'll find it's an extended Simile,

we move LIKE cagey tigers being the obvious clue.

I feel like a vacuum cleaner

A COMPLETE SUCKER!

Mr Cave, ftw.

Then there's the classic: "I'm serious as cancer / When I say rhythm is a dancer." Turbo B, what were you thinking?

Love you like a fat kid loves cake

makes me smile every time I think about it

Shake it like a polaroid picture

Also another favourite.

Doesn't that imply that she isn't a natural woman?

Is this the first post-op pop song? Or is she a robot?

You know...

this song always makes me laugh, a woman saying some guy makes her feel like a natural woman. Surely having the xx chromosome would already cancel that out? Unless of course it was a transvestite singing the song, then I could totally understand the logic.
It's definitely not Carol Kings finest lyrical moment.

And I definitely need to stop reading so deep into things. And stop drinking so much coffee.
