Nicola Roberts Girls Aloud

The beauty business

Nicola Roberts, Girls Aloud's strong but silent type, has just launched her very own make-up range, in association with cutesy cosmetics brand Jelly Pong Pong. Going under the rather wet name of Dainty Doll, the range is specifically targeted at ladies so pale that they make a mortuary slab resemble a blushing English rose, and, as with all things like this recently, the line was developed during a reality TV show, The Passions Of Girls Aloud.

It seems Nicola isn't the only celeb without a firm background in cosmetic science hoping to break the make-up market, oh gods no. Here are some other women who've been dabbling with the business of beauty.

Pamela Anderson

Two years ago Pamela Anderon announced that she had teamed up with Bed Head to produce a range of "cosmetics and ethical hair products for people", and ew, "their pets". The "easy make up line" was supposed to be available on her website, but we've had a check, and there's still na-da. Maybe we'll just have to hold on a little bit longer. In the meantime, here's some sage advice that Pammy dished out when she talked about the range back in 2006. "Take 10 minutes for yourself each morning, before kids and husbands and comb your hair/wash your face, put a little mascara on, and then run around making breakfast. If you feel good then everyone else will too." Remember that, mascara first, and then make breakfast for everyone. So simple!

Victoria Beckham

Posh's 'only available in Japan' line of slap, V-Sculpt, is so-called because the point of it is so its Japanese patrons can make their faces more angular just like Posh. Seriously. Here's what Victoria said in Elle about the range: "In Japan, [some women] are very self-conscious. They don't like that they feel they have round faces. So I came up with this concept of sculpting. Basically, it shows where to highlight and how to apply the makeup. It's all about sculpting your face and getting that V."

Avril Lavigne

As well as planning to release her own celebrity frangrance, Avril Lavigne will also unleash a line of pampering products into your local Superdrug. Last December, she – well, maybe not Avril personally – applied for a patent for "fragrances and perfumery, aftershave, pre-shave, bath oil, bath soap, shower gel, body shampoo, deodorant for personal use, tissues impregnated with cosmetic lotions, bath crystals, bath milks, dusting powder, body lotion, body splash, body cream, hand lotion and talc." Mmm – tissues impregnated with cosmetic lotions – sounds delightful.

Shakira

While Nicola Roberts is catering for the pasty Brits, Shakira's new beauty line is aimed at the Spanish/Latino market. She's joined up with Puig, a massive Spanish cosmetics brand who also make Antonio Banderas' branded perfume (musky, I would imagine). "I am very excited to be able to express myself through another creative medium," said Shakira in one of those statements that manage to say absolutely nothing, while still saying something. "My feeling is that personal care and beauty should be effortless and accessible for everyone."

I bought Nicola's make up

Since I've never been able to find a foundation quite pale enough for my skin.
Whilst the make up is very good and the perfect clour for me, it's horrendously overpriced. It's £12, plus it's only available from ASOS.com so there's an extra £3 post and packaging, and there's hardly anything to it!
I've never seen a pot so small, it was so disappointing.
