The US Navy have opened fire on an Iranian vessel in the Strait of Hormuz (now, there's a post-hardcore band name ripe for the taking).
Obviously, war is now INEVITABLE or something, possibly.

US Ship Fires On Iranian Vessel

A ship under US military command has fired at least one shot towards an Iranian boat, officials say.
A US defence official confirmed the cargo ship was contracted by the US Military Sealift Command.
In January, the US said Iranian boats threatened its warships along a route used for crude oil shipments.

I don't think they want it even now
I think they realise that they've properly fucked up in solidifying the neocons into the Republican Party in the US. If they wanted to take out Iran they would have needed to have planned for it to happen last year. As it is, the war in Iraq is unpopular enough as it is, and with McCain potentially following he's not going to be as sympathetic to their hawkish military policy.
They needed to have planned the aftermath of Iraq properly. If they had, they'd have a base from which to invade Iran and/or Syria. As it is, they're already mired in a deeply unpopular occupation of another nation, and they just can't afford another war because it'll make the idea of invading Iran even more unpalatable than it already is. They're probably banking on leaving it for now, and thinking of at least two presidents aways before Iran will become a feasible target without destroying the adminstration's ratings.
The Republicans DON'T want it.
Bush and Cheney probably do, but it's still really unlikely.
Bush isn't a stupid man. Wrongheaded-certainly; but not stupid.
He realises most of what he has tried to achieve has failed. I believe that if he thought he could end the Iranian Nuclear problem by use of airstrikes he would.
