Thanks to the Play.com sale, I have a choice of one of these albums to start with:
Brutal Youth
Spike
Kojak Variety
Mighty Like A Rose
The Juliet Letters
So where to start? Cheers.

i've no heard any of them
infact, i've only heard one of his albums, but 'this years model' is probably one of my favourite albums ever.
it's worth paying for.
^^^
Those albums are from his least exciting period. Splash out on This Years Model or My Aim is True.
But if you have to get something from that list get either Brutal Youth or Spike. x
sure thing
yeah
None of those, for a start
This Year's Model or Armed Forces.
Probably Brutal Youth
but Spike and Mighty Like A Rose also have come great tracks on them.
All those albums listed are from 89 onwards and are prob not be considered to be his best. If this is your first dip into EC you'd probably be better off starting with the late 70's/Early 80's stuff imo...
the years model
the armed forces
or
get happy
are the best!
Hang on a bit
and get this one for a fiver...

saying that..
This years model is only a fiver.

so it can't be beat!
There are better versions of the album around with extras but if you are just starting collecting Costello this will keep you going for a while.
EC Albums
Brutal youth is an excellent album Check out the track MY SCIENCE FICTION TWIN quirky and lyrically superb!
Spike and Mighty like a rose have some decent tunes. Kojak variety and The Julliet letters were for me dissapointing. As a few people have said This years Model is Elvis at his best beats anything around at the moment for energy and tunes.
Well, unfortunately, Mr. Costello has been suffering an identity crisis for decades
forget ALL those and get Armed Forces or This Year's Model.
My Aim Is True as well as the two mentioned above are the best
...others, like Imperial Bedroom and Trust are good in patches.
I would say Elvis is one of those artists where your best bet (apart from those albums mentioned) is the Best Of. And you have enough to choose from!
So in summary
Get: Armed Forces, This Years Model, Imperial Bedroom, Brutal Truth, Get Happy, Punch The Clock, My Aim is True
and if you like what you hear get the rest too! I wouldn't bother with a best of as those out there are missing quite a few gems.
Oh
and add Trust to that list too!
i like how you've moulded
Trust an Brutal Youth into one accessible package!
But I dunno, that Best Of with the kind-of Warholian green front cover sees me OK. Fair play, though
Cheers everyone
I'm gonna skip it and get This Years Model!
Costello
Blood And Chocolate's a brutal record, and a record from the mid 1980s which sounds nothing like the time.
This Year's Model
or My Aim Is True, but there are a lot of good 'uns from his early period. Later, notsamuch.
Elvis, methinks, invented "alternative" rock.
