Although musically this is a change from past albums, I don't think it's as much of a change as many seem to be making it out to be, particularly with the reviewer here claiming that if it weren't for Beth Gibbons voice, you wouldn't be able to recognise it as a Portishead album. Granted the sound is different from before, but I see it more as a progression from their previous work rather than this revolutionary change in direction it's being heralded as.
