Successful indie-rock sorts Coldplay are to make a new track available as a free single, starting from tomorrow.
'Violet Hill' will be available from April 29 (at 12.15pm), for one week, via the band's official website Coldplay.com. It'll receive a 'proper' release in early May, with a seven-inch version of the song coming free with May 7's issue of NME. The seven comes backed with 'A Spell A Rebel Yell'.
The track's taken from the band's new Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends album; try asking for that in HMV after a few afternoon pints. Wanna see its artwork? OKAY.

like the last album was supposed to be influenced by kraftwerk and johnny cash. i fucking hate it when bands cite influences they dont sound anything like to try and appear diverse and sophisticated, its desperately pathetic. the most recent example being foals claiming to be influenced by gwen stefani. i dont give a shit if you LIKE her, you don't even remotely SOUND LIKE her. john lydon dug van der graaf generator but it would be pretty stupid to cite them as an influence on the sex pistols

Physical singles pretty much always lose money these days. Plus there are thousands of people who probably once really liked them and got turned off by a) their ubiquity and b) X&Y. Giving it for free means people have got no major reason not to give it a pop.
(I know what the inevitable response from many people will be to that last sentence, but you know what I mean)
