Am I missing something? I got 'Young Team', and it's not bad but it's certainly not amazing. Am I not playing it loud enough? Is there another Mogwai release I need to buy in order to sway my opinion?

Question for all the fans of this album...

R U STILL IN 2 IT?

Yes

(i am a long way from home)

rock action

buy rock action

^What this guy says.

Although I don't have any other Mogwai albums.

Even though I tried to order Happy Songs For Happy People yesterday from Play.com in their £5 sale, there wasn't any in stock. :(

rock action > life

mogwai are probably my favourite band. a tall statement i know. but aye, Rock Action would probably be your best bet as it's got both "Sine Wave" and "2 Rights Make 1 Wrong" (the latter is one of the finest songs ever written) but atop that, i'd go for Happy Songs and then probably Mr. Beast.

just buy them all and you shall be turned. sorry, mogwai make me ramble :)

maybe they are best seen live

I've never really got them either.

I'm sure if you left any vaguely competent musicians alone in a room with guitars, drums and pedals you would get the same sort of noise.

Mr Beast

knocks Young Team into a hat, but nothing they did tops the Xmas Steps EP, imho. Might dig that out now...

Good idea.

yes to

mr. beast

Yep, I'd agree.

I like them live, but very rarely listen to them at home now.

I never said I didn't like it

I was just expecting something more. I also bought Holy Fuck and Chrome Hoof's albums the same day, so far I prefer both of them to Young Team.

Sorry

I saw "not amazing" and panicked. I'm okay now.

I reckon try Happy Songs next. It's really good and quite different in sound and focus.

That Holy Fuck record is amazing too.

Thanks!

A friend of mine also recommended Happy Songs as well, so I reckon I'll go for that.

I'd get Government Commissions

That's worth having.

i don't like Young Team much.

S'all about Happy Songs, Rock Action & Mr Beast for me

I do actually like CODY the best

im not just saying it because no one else has..i mean it. I think Cody then Young Team then Happy Songs then Rock Action then Mr Beast is my order of preference.

the only good one?

come on now

Die Young?

But yeah, CODY was the first one I got and it's still my favourite (because it has Cody, May Nothing But Happiness Come Through Your Door, Ex-Cowboy, and Christmas Steps).

I don't have Rock Action though, so maybe I'm missing out there?

i agree

i really like that album. it's easily the most relaxed Mogwai album but it's still got that sinister air about it. lovely

I think it is their best album

I do wonder if some of it is the effect of time. I still think it would be a great album released now but so many people have ripped them off that it probably feels more tired than it did when it first came out.
My next favourite is probably Happy Songs. However, it only has a few good songs. But those good songs are their best songs and just about hold the album together.

Am I not playing it loud enough?

I suspect up a notch wouldn't hurt.

If you've still got the receipt

you can take it back for something good.

Mogwai are essentially a live band and have never recorded well.

Rock Action

I have Rock Action and I like it. Not really listened to much of their more recent stuff.

if you can find it

get TEN RAPID

it is a collection of early EPs and is very good

I'm not sure if it's 'WAYYYYY better' than Young Team

But it certainly gives it a run for its money. They're certainly my two favourites.

Yes it is.

With Young Team they are my favourite Mogwai releases...

It hurts me to see Young Team (and Mogwai) badmouthed so much...

Give it time. I'd suggest Ten Rapid next. Summer, the two Helicons, Ithica and A Place for Parks are all stellar songs, and amongst their finest achievements... fuck it... the entire album is just top notch.

Erm, Mr. Beast has some of their most accessible songs on it, probably, but it feels a bit jumbled. Happy Songs For Happy People is great, as is Rock Action. And I think CODY and EP+6 are hard done by.

i really like ep+6

its that wee bit more chillaxed. i listen to it often. But mogwai in general getting a kicking this thread :(

Xmas Steps, Stanley Kubrick and Burn Prom Girl Queen

are amongst my favourite songs by them. It's greatly underrated.

i really love govt. commisions

i saw Mogwai live on Saturday night and my ears are actually still ringing a bit :|

I don't think they've ever topped 'young team'

It'd still be one of my top ten albums of all time.

I think if I heard it for the first time it'd probably blur into the explosions in the this will destroy your god is an astronaut but at the time... God.

Suggestion. Turn it up and just listen to Mogwai Fear Satan. Go on, for me.

That's pretty scary...

...as I bought the very same album yesterday in an attempt to get into Mogwai. I think it's ok for instrumental music, but i fail to see how they are rated so highly.

I'm in a similar boat

After being in a band with a couple of guys who totally worshipped Mogwai, I decided to buy Young Team, and while I'd never go so far as to say it's a bad album, it's certainly not a great one.

I dunno, maybe it's just because I've been listening to other instrumental bands who just take the whole dark thing a step further and leave mogwai looking a bit Ford Mondeo.
