I've been asked to pick some music for a friend's funeral, just wondered what you would have for yours.
One of the songs I've picked is No Surprises - I hope it's appropriate and raises a smile.
Exit Music (no irony intended) is suitably funereal but a bit dodgy for the parents in the last line ("we hope that you choke".) Fade Out is probably safer and just as accessible. And might be familiar (wasn't it used on an advert or something?) You wouldn't want to choose something inaccessible or downright alienating to most people and them thinking it was some kind of insult. People tend to have strong reactions to Radiohead.
that you haven't mentioned Motion Picture Soundtrack yet.
The line "I'll see you in the next life" being key to it being a successful choice. It's very heavy on the emotion sure, but it depends what you aim to get out of it.
Some people go for the comedy choice for theirs, to lighten up a funeral (Another One Bites The Dust believe it or not!), whereas I can't really think of a song like that.
For light hearted I would say Mr Tambourine Man, or maybe the title track from Ágætis Byrjun.
But when I die, I'll play whatever my favourite song has been after all those years. I highly doubt it'll be Else by Built To Spill after all those years!
to be the only song played at my funeral, it's 16 minutes long, starts quietly, gets a bit louder, and ends on such a happy, uplifting group vocal part that I think everyone would leave with a smile.
Was at a funeral where the undertaker had been asked to supply the music. The person who died (my uncle) was a Johnny Cash fan but somehow the undertaker took this to mean a country & western fan. Inappropriate stuff was played.
A bit crass and obvious to musos, but sure to make everyone else cry. (Musos will just sigh and roll their eyes, which I like the idea of, too.) I'm having it at my funeral for that very reason - its even in my will. Not the bit about making them cry, of course.
Not Fade Away by Buddy Holly. It has the connotations but its not totally miserable like Exit Music or Street Spirit. Id say Motion Picture Soundtrack and No Surprises too because of the slightly optimistic sound in both.
Sorry to read this is an actual event not a hypothetical thread - 'Street Spirit' is a highly suitable choice - mournful but uplifting if that makes any sense.
:(
I'd suggest playing your friend's favourite music, seems more appropriate than anything else.
Yes
He was a Radio head fan as well though.
Radiohead songs for a funeral

I'm amazed

There's something
very uncomfortable about being asked to pick the music for a person's funeral who you've never met.
Are you having a "celebrate the life" or "mourn the death" type funeral 'cuz that would sway the type of music being played...?
Okay,
I miss read the thread.
I'd want Dash And Blast by Yndi Halda
to be the only song played at my funeral, it's 16 minutes long, starts quietly, gets a bit louder, and ends on such a happy, uplifting group vocal part that I think everyone would leave with a smile.
Or bored rigid.
surely it all depends on what the friend in questions favourite music was?
what i mean by that
is it will all be different for everyone
it has to be chosen carefully

As I disappear into the flames
Nick Cave will be singing "Babe I'm on Fire". Everyone will have to sit there for fifteen minutes while I roast.
Excellent.
nice idea
but i'd encourage (from beyond the grave - woooo!) my friends and family to all get pissed and do a karaoke version of it as i burn. funtimes.
Excellent plan.
As long as they dress up like in the video.
The backyard abortionist is particularly disturbing ...
but would be hilarious at a boozed up funeral!
So I need to try and amass one friend or family member for each person in the song
Nick and the rest of the Bad Seeds can come along for the last verse.
PLAN! You want to come? You may have first pick from the song.
yeah, fo' sure!
when is it? can i be "the drug addled wreck/ with the needle in his neck?" if so, i doubt it'll be long until my own funeral :D
That's commitment!
Not sure when it will be, though I've had a nasty cough for a couple of days. And a bit of a headache. Hmmm.
Bucks Fizz
the land of make believe.
or 'motion picture soundtrack' by radiohead. though people would explode with misery.
this thread has no right not to be about the saves the day song
tha's what i thought it would be about.
but it's just another funeral music thread. poo.
Grandaddy
So You'll Aim Towards The Sky.
if somebody could find me
a really fucking good Metal or Reggae (or both!) version if Be Thou My Vision, I'd have no second thoughts of whacking that bad boy on at mine x
I'm very tempted to write my choices down somewhere and let people know where they are should it eve
(which chances are it will one day)
Morbid I know, and I won't be there to enjoy it but I'd hate it if someone chose stuff they thought i liked but actually hate.
A 50 minute piece I composed myself
consisting of guitar feedback, a badly-played, out-of-tune violin and me shrieking the first three chapters of Lucky Jim.
atmosphere - joy division

followed by
atmosphere by Russ Abbott, if their not crying already this will get them.
neutral milk hotel

Got to be...
Highway to Hell - AC/DC
No cars go -arcade fire
That would set everyone off, epic celebratory tune!!!
I would want..
a celebrity pop star to re-record an already established weepy with suitably ammended lyrics here and there.
Joseph Arthur - In The Sun
If they were religious. Although I like it and i'm not. Went very well in that Scrubs episode/Saved!
Here is something that might be useful

Sorry about your friend.
That's sad
sorry to hear about your friend :(
for me, today:
Klaus Dolginger and Giorgio Moroder - The swamps of sadness (The NeverEnding Story soundtrack).
maybe something like
Not Fade Away by Buddy Holly. It has the connotations but its not totally miserable like Exit Music or Street Spirit. Id say Motion Picture Soundtrack and No Surprises too because of the slightly optimistic sound in both.
hope youre okay
*hug*
Leave Them All Behind
by Ride. I am SO having that one at my funeral, especially the huge feedback white-out at the end. It would be worth coming back for!
