BRISTOL MUSIC SCENE

As well as its heavily publicised drum 'n bass scene, Bristol is also the home of many rock and pop acts. I feel a lot of these bands do not revieve the recognition they deserve. Here are just a few to get you started with, if you can get to Bristol, you really must try and check these bands out - please add if you know anymore!!!:

Fortune Drive: http://www.myspace.com/fortunedrive - Pure rock - Been around Bristol for years. Have recently released an album and another one is planned. Playing the Cooler this Thursday on Park Street.

Saturdays & Sundays:
http://www.myspace.com/saslive
Three piece band hailing from the Uni. Very very impressive live - and have an eclectic set of catchy recordings as well. I think these guys are going to do really well. Playing Dublin Castle in London on Thursday and The Croft on Saturday in Bristol.

Ulysses:
http://www.myspace.com/ulyssesgb
Pyschadelic indie stuff from, it must be set, an older generation of rockers. But a striking sound nonetheless. A must see (even though they are from Bath).
Playing Espionage at the Cooler on 9th May.

Lets Tea Party:
http://www.myspace.com/letsteaparty
Original, bouncy, catchy pop. This trio also hail from Bristol Uni and are rapidly becoming one of the most talked about bands in the city.

These are my favourites. But also check out - the Hit Ups, Bearknuckles, Turbowolf, Countryside, Santa Dog...

Lets Tea Party are appalling.

One of the most irritating bands I have ever heard.

Let's Tea Party

are genius in my opinion. Very very talented.

change of order

FD are appalling.
One of the most irritating bands I have ever heard.

hmmmm

well FD have probably gone past the point of recieving any mainstream nationwide success...but they are a brilliant live band, so much energy, and their recordings are good too. My pick would be 'Sparkle'

Fortune Drive are TERRIBLE

They were so bad I asked to sit on the door and work rather than have to listen to their turgid set.

agreed

Gravenhurst are an excellent band.

munchmunch

sj esau
francois
i know i have no collar

hell even huntspill and moribunds outfit probably sound better than FD and i havent heard them yet...

im not so keen on munchmunch

they sound messy. like hot chip played backwards.

i think most people would like the sound of that

compared to stereophonicslite pub rock

munch munch

are fucking ace!

Why?

Why do people like them?

Their recordings sound terrible.... i had to turn it off

you guys arent

stereophonicslite are you?

Huntspill

AND moribunds outfit?

That is his outfit, unless he is having an affair. In which case there will be tears, showing up at his work demanding to see him, calling him a bastard in public, and a series of ill advised texts asking who this other band is and whether they are better at weak indie than we are.

Then a few moths of counselling.

They are the only

ones that understand.

and OLO Worms

OLO worms

are the band during whose set, zapsta opted to play snake on his mobile phone. A damning endorsement if ever there was one.

...

It was therefore something of an achievement by the next band, OLO Worms, to drag things down to an even more abject level. Distracted as I was by the selection of YouTube videos, You’ve Been Framed excerpts and student films (which could have quite feasibly been made by the previous band) projected onto the screen behind them throughout their set, I struggled to gain any comprehension what they actually sounded like. However, I am reliably informed that “boring” summed it up aptly, and that the continuous barrage of imagery was merely incidental in the music’s failure to hold my attention.

Brilliant

I quite like them. IKIHNC can do one though.

^ hearts

FD

Clearly

they have side projects as well now apparently. Can't wait.

im not suprised

with all the seed they must have spread in their adoring groupie crowds.

^Is that libelous? If it is then it is all preceeded with a big fat "ALLEGEDLY"

...

Bristol-based I Know I Have No Collar initiated proceedings, and from the offset, it was difficult to ascertain exactly what they had done to merit the honour. With songs about librarians and American television, a ukulele and what looked like a couple of keyboards with rubber piping coming out of them, their was admittedly something endearingly twee about their amateur shambolics, but it was nothing more than any other group of arty friends who had thought to themselves, “Hey, let’s meet up and make some songs together!” could have managed.

i know i have no collar.

were BRILLIANT LIVE!

thoroughly excellent.

lets tea party? smashing. enjoying DA4.

its what the song is about

Hail! Perestroika

www.myspace.com/hailperestroika

Electro by a guy I used to be in a band with. There's some really good recordings on the page. There's definitely a MSTRKRFT feel of big riffs against big beats, but then I've always been a sucker for that sort of stuff so think it's worth a listen!

The Bumblebees..

are playing at the Cooler with Arctic Circle on May 2nd. Thats a gig if ever theres been one! The bassist for Rose Kemp might even be doing the sound! Perhaps. Incestuous scene.

This thread is kinda like the Democrat Presidential candidate race. x

what about

GEISHA?

They were fucking brutal!

Big Joan

SJ Esau
Jeremy Smoking Jacket
Rose Kemp
Fuck Buttons (were Bristol for a wee while)

ah, just spotted you mentioned rock and pop, so probably none of these.

How about Beatnik Filmstars?

still...

Rose Kemp deserves a mention

Rose Kemp

is the sound of pain and death. And not in a good way (if you thought it could be a good thing) either. My LORD!

Ross Kemp, on the other hand...can probably at least hold a decent tune.

meh

her last recordings weren't the best. but i still thought she was decent live.

I saw a good singer the other day

She was called Emily Teague I think. By Bristol standards jolly good.

Well done everyone.

Still are mate!

Geisha are playing at my house in July. I hope it'll still be there after they've finished with it. Absolutely monolithic they are!

Also:
Freeze Puppy
Alexander Thomas
Da'at the Veil
Crescent are from Bristol aren't they?
The whole Yardcore crew, and Pinch/Tectonic etc deserve a mention as they are mint. Not rock/pop but who cares?

Fuck Buttons

Fuck Buttons

Dude.

Fortune Drive :(

are you dependent on them having success

in order to make a living or are you just a fan?

nope

im just a fan of them. ive only seen them live twice actually...once at the big xmas gig, and once in london.

i am helping SAS with their promotion though.

Hoorah!!

For the "wee bit" of time Fuck Buttons were a part of the BRISTOL MUSIC SCENE!

The Muscle Club

venture a little more west... Bristol and Cardiff are so close most people hop from city to city to catch gigs anyways!

check out the muscle club:
http://www.myspace.com/themuscleclub

do you ever

get confused for being some sort of club night/promoter???

good tunes though! hope its going well for you

soooooooo

are we all out on Thursday at The Apple and Start the Bus?

We can swap anecdotes about FD and fight to the death over who loves the guitarist more, us or himself!

fortune drive...

the lead guitarist dude got punched the other day. someone showed me a pic of him on facebook. broken jaw. he looks a right state it must be said.
someone hates him.

and their drummer and bassist left the other week.

still playing on thursday though.

im in London on thursday with SAS. Dublin Castle.

it wasnt me

i swear. Ask Moribund, i heard he already done in that one from My Family, Dawn French and Ted Danson.

I was one my way to this assault

and hit Kris Marshall on the way.

He held me up

if anything

:D

Their bass player

annoyed me the one time I saw them. He kept pulling massive bass player faces. Annoying.

(I'm at start the bus on thurs but I dont know any of you so it wont make any difference)

what does a bass player face look like...

...just out of genuine interest???

Thats it!

And he also did that thing where he dropped hi left hand and played an open note whilst pulling a really serious face.

Annoying.

You've probably chosen four of the most offensively bad bands in bristol

which is a shame because there is so much more interesting stuff going on there.

some good bands are munch munch, the bumblebees, the lauras, safetyword, the jelas.

however.

you are in the jelas. so you are bound to be biased.

each to their own. i think the bands i chose i good.

i do not think the jelas are very good. poor recordings. very poor vocalist.

how did you know that?

mental.

i would not expect you to think the jelas are very good if you like those bands.

i am not in any of the other bands i mentioned and they're all amazing. better than fortune drive, they're like the mix of maroon 5 and the fratellis no-one ever wanted to hear.

i.have.been.

stalking.you

Better than being

in one of the most offensively bad bands on the planet.

Kid Carpet!

Saturdays and Sundays, however, are one of the most boring bands I've ever seen.

Sid Delicious!

I deliberately replied here because they are supporting Kid Carpet at the Croft on May 23rd. Man are they ace. The bassist is so suave and mysterious.

I think this is possibly my favourite DiS thread ever

"My favourite, shitty Bristol band are less shit than your favourite, shitty Bristol band!" Oh lol.

SING IT!

AND WE'RE ALL GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL!

:D

one word...

safetyword

...

Yes!

Safetyword are utterly amazing.

Other great bands/people:

Big Joan
SJ Esau
Munch Munch
North Sea Navigator
Team Brick!
Men Diamler
Thought Forms (okay, not quite Bristol, but close)
3hos
Geisha
Steveless
Rose Kemp

many more that I can't remember right now...

And sadly, no longer with us:

Ivory Springer
Hunting Lodge
The Girl from Headquarters

fuck

why does no one care about Gravenhurst?!

The Jelas

were good when they had that other guitarist. He must have seen sense and buggered off.

mine..

Safetyword
SJ Esau
Team Brick
Fuck Buttons
Rose Kemp
Rozi Plain & Racheal Dadd
Munch Munch
Freeze Puppy

Zapsta

..what version of snake was it?
i love mobile phone games, and youtube videos, and DiS chat! It's the future!

Snake 2

Standard.

Freeze puppy

is off his gourd. So entertaining to watch!

i'll tell him that

he'll love it.
although i don't understand the logic of leaving a band because you know they'll be worse without you.

i really wanna see sj esau.

also, i saw a band called fringes the other week. they're mint.

Matt?

is that you?
