I'm assuming this thread will get an few odd replies! So instead of a question, how about any thoughts on the event. Also, I never realised how odd looking U2 look up-close. The drummer is sinister looking...
I hate eveyone on the line-up. I hate Gandolf. I hate BBC music coverage. I hate Hyde Park when its filled with a bunch of commercials. I hate they way Africa is being represented. I Hate the way rich western celebs think they alone have the power to change anything. Yes I hate poverty but im begining to hate the make poverty history campgain on the grounds that we all know it will never work without the wrong people still in power. I hate the adverts. I hate the merchandise. I hate the people that go to this event without throwing up at least several times.
Heh...how many of those there today - let alone the millions on their sofas watching - will bother to buy fair trade coffee/tea/sugar/bananas/etc from now on, once the music stops? Nah, we've got our wristbands, and got to sing along to Coldplay in Hyde Park, it's a few pence more expensive so balls to that eh...
And it's not just the usual cynic in me that's saying those that will bother will be in the minority. Despite the small-scale but important difference it'd make (X tens of millions of people)...
I think you sound like kevin the teenager. U HATE merchandise. I also hate merchandise. In fact I REALLY FUCKING HATE MERCHANDISE!!! Easy to be cynical on a full stomach. No more complacency. Sloganeering sucks too. I think this will have something of an effect. Everybody do at least a bit. Sorry, one of my kids has just died. Ah no, my mistake, he`s black, dosen`t matter.
I actually ended up enjoying most of the evenings proceedings. A great show (from the living room) - some bands should have played more, some a lot less...spot on with the cause though!
I pretty much hate everyone playing, so will be avoiding BBC1, 2 and 3 plus Radio 1, 2 and Five Live by watching the cricket and listening to music. U2 should be put down, apart from Bono, who should be burried up to his waste and then people can pay money to charity for a rock to throw at him.
This thing is starting to make me feel sick in the stomach. There are just too many people with too many views of what this is meant to be achieving. There's Bob Geldof, the king, there's the record companies who are getting free publicity while clearing their conciouncous (sp?), and then there's the bastards that are JR, Edith Bowman, Fern-fucking-stupid-doesn't-know-what-the-fuck-is-going-on-Britten walking around smugly grabbing "celebrities" just there to further their careers.
Thank god for Ricky Gervais. "Yeah! 'Cos no-one's using this event to further their career."
I was just watching sky news and they had the lead singer from Texas on. Why is her opinion important? Other than that she is vaguely famous, she adds nothing more than an average member of the public.
I can't see her without thinking of the T in the Park they headlined a few years back, and the mass exodus from the main stage just prior to their set. They had to broadcast a message telling everyone that all the other tents were full (when they fucking well weren't.)
If you can look beyond the media frenzy and the egos, surely you can see that this is an important social issue. We are far too comfortable in our homes with our million tv channels and internet connection etc compared to those in Africa.
If we the DIS community at least could make half the effort to add our support by adding our names to the online petition at www.live8live.com as we do moaning about the facelessness of celebrity endorsement then thats surely a more productive and difference making way of going about things.
"...but seriously..."
"Let's not forget why we're here"
2 shots for hearing the following:
"Wow! What a set by U2 there. Really wowed the crowds."
"(crowd member) I hope this, um, likes, make, like, a, like difference, because poverty is, like, bad? ROBBIE'S GORGEOUS!"
3 shots for:
"My god. Bono's dead."
"My god. Doherty's dead"
"Wow, what a set there from Keane."
"Oooh look it's <insert z-list celeb> let's have a word"
I cannot stand that man! I agree with George Monbiot that at times he's actually hindering the Make Poverty History campaign. His awful awful imormptu speech made cringe so badly I've got repititive strain injurty.
Just for once I'd love for them to cut to Cat Deely or someone and for her to say "well... yeah ok... U2 were a bit shit actually..."
I have swithced off. The list of artists doesn't encourage me to watch but I thought I would gice it a try.
But we have Bono preaching, and boy does he preach some crap. And U2 are consistently dull.
And we have the coverage itself. Why does TV coverage of an outdoor festival have to be directed by a moron with no interest in music? There are about a hundred different camera angles, 98 of which are pointless and the director seems keen to use all 100 switching every two seconds, and going to a long shot for no reason every five seconds. It is dumb and unprofessional and just demonstrates how little interest in music the director has. It was the same for the Glastonbury coverage.
And when U2 are over what do we get? FERN COTTON!!!!!!!!
Why are you more bothered about direction and camera angles? This isnt supposed to be a showcase of television. If all you can do is pick apart the aesthetics of the event, thats pretty lame and you have truly missed the point of this event Traynor.
true. but what i am gonna achieve for our african friends but subjecting myself to this nonsense - id rather fill-out the online petition thing and switch over to the ladies finals....
Everytime ive seen Chris fuckface Martin on the tele this week a little piece of me dies.
Elton John and Pete Docherty coming up soon. I can't wait. I really hope he swears or at least does something vaugely interesting to fuck up the preceedings.
"Why are you more bothered about direction and camera angles? "
I was bashing the BBC which is always a worthwhile hobby.
Your snide swipe at me is an intention to belittle my politics which is a false criticism and you know it. Anshul started some political posts about G8 - have a look at them.
Ross is interviewing Andrew Marr - a fairly intellignet person who is talking politics. What does the dumb director do? He/she cuts to an overhead shot of the pod in which the interview is taking place thus distracting the viewers from what Marr is saying. And then we go back to Cotton. The BBC wouldn't want its daytime viewers to be subjected to any serious politics.
god-damn it Elton John is such a cock-choke - why is he on the bill? He is no longer relevent is he? oh wait, yeah i see, he's a gay - AIDs - Africa = oh i geddit! hahaha: has anyone noticed the huge AOL adverts by the side of the stage?? Eltons's guitarist looks like Iggy Pop!
"god-damn it Elton John is such a cock-choke - why is he on the bill? He is no longer relevent is he? oh wait, yeah i see, he's a gay - AIDs - Africa = oh i geddit! hahaha"
I've switched off... seeing Bono with foot hoisted on the monitor belching out a load of bollox and that cock from Coldplay announcing Bittersweet as the 'greatest song ever written' (or something like that) was enough for me.
Richard ashcroft outshining Coldplay
Fearne Cotton's bizarre dress/top
Sgt Pepper moment with U2 and Macca
Lowlights
Pete Doherty - car crash tv or what. He barely remembered the words.
Coldplay - Chris Martin's performance was boring and sloppy
Bill Gates turning up
Dido - zzzzzzz
Joss Stone will be so...
I've found her the most genuine, warm-hearted performer so far. She's kept me quiet and stopped me making cynical comments about the event for the last 10 minutes so she's done something right!
I fucking hate Dido, i'm pleased i'm not watching. Her voice just grates on me. It just seems so monotone and without range... it bores the fucking pants off me.
the dis geeks are at it again maybe willy mason, dizzee rascal, 65 days of static, rufus wainright, art of fighting, ymss, arcade fire, patrick wolf and another 25 dis geek bands should have their own live 8 upstairs in the barfly or would that be too big.
The whole point about Live8 it is supposed to be as populist as possible, in order to bring about the largest coalition of support possible. So we can't exactly be suprised, or even really moan about the line up I suppose.
of course, i totally understand that, but it doesn't mean i have to watch it. I will keep flicking it on from time to time to see who is on etc. If i see something that i think is laughable/gastly/brilliant, then i will voice my opinion.
a good reputation is the one thing he doesn't have
ahem, he has an unrivalled fantastic reputation as one of the worlds best and most ruthless business men. Who can top what he has achieved? His methods are questionable, but jesus that is one bright motherfucker!
U2 releasing doves during the middle eight of Beutiful Day
Chris Martin bringing the Quo into the moribund In My Place
Elton John thanking the crowd for "supporting Bob Geldof".
Vermin Kaye breathing air from the same planet as me
they just had muse on from paris, it sounded like they weren't amplefied. Ross tried to make out they were good but you could tell Gervais thought they were shit which they sounded like they were.
Hahaha, sweet. After Mark Radcliffe's deeply unimpressed face doing a link after The Killers' set at Glasto, I almost wish I'd been watching just for that (*almost*...)
What exactly is a concert supposed to achieve? Theres no cash going to Africa and I'm sure Bush et al aren't too concerned about past it millionaire/bland new pop stars bleating stereotypical slogans. Surely the money required to stage the gig couldve been spent on aid? Maybe I'm wrong.
Kofi annan's dignity is quite refreshing considering the huge amount of celebrity's demeaning themselves. I can't help but haver a lot of respect for him
I think the fact they'll sound like Razorlight, as opposed to someone good/bearable/non-punchable, is precisely what makes their slagging inevitable though ;)
they have lost money staging the show which i think is ridiculous, surely there were better ways of organising this event, and Kofi Annan on stage was just hilarious, a real David Brent celebrity appearance moment
