I f you can find the Peel Session box set then thats a good bet

else go for a classic album along the lines of:
Hex Enduction Hour
Perverted By Language
This Nations Grace

Or there is a greatest hits called 50,000 Fall fans can't be wrong.

I hope this helps.

what's the new one like

in your opinion E-Man?

"they have a

slightly intimidating ouvre"

True dat.

Start with Grotesque. If you like it, then buy the Peel box set

The new one is a treat

I think it is the most enjoyable for years.
I dont't know how he has put together this new band but they seem to be able to produce the repetitive garage sound, that he has been heading towards the last decade, more convincly than the last 2 lineups. Add to this Eleni's vastly improved keyboard parts the base that he needs to work from is in place and solid.
He seems to be having alot more fun on this album, more energy in his vocals (on Wolf Kidult Man he may even be singing properly).
The songwriting quality is much improved over Reformation.
Add to that Grant Showbiz as producer who has always brought the best in Smith (Dragnet, Country On The Click).

Cheers

I like DiS for this reason you can get stuff from people who know more about stuff than you do.

Further to this point there should not be any eye-rolling when people want to find out stuff in my humble opinion.

there's my 2cents

Hex Enduction Hour

or Slates. Unless you have pots of money in which case buy the Peel Box Set.

The 50,000 Fall Fans comp is the closest thing to a affordable best of although it's a few years old now but it's still probably the best album to start with if you're not sure which era of The Fall you're keen on.

Seems like there's new Fall fan on here each week

Which is a VERY GOOD THING.

50,000 Fall Fans is a good starter. Or you can go for Grotesque (which is the first album I bought).

Personally though, Hex is a masterpiece. But try Live at the Witch Trials or Dragnet for beginner's accessibility.

Or maybe I am Kurious Oranj? Ahhhh..choices

.

Any of:

Grotesque (After the Gramme)
Hex Enduction Hour
Perverted by Language
This Nation's Saving Grace
The Real New Fall LP (Formerly Country on the Click)
458489 A Sides

From their first 10 years...

I'd definitely listen to Live at the Witch Trials, Dragnet, Grotesque, Perverted by Language, Wonderful & Frightening World of The Fall and (their greatest LP, in my opinion) This Nation's Saving Grace.

Also, Bend Sinister is a fantastic album no-one seems to mention that much.

Into the early 90s, you should hear Shiftwork and Light User Syndrome.

I'm sure you'll have your own favourites, but these are some of mine.

Oh yes, and the B-sides comps (B-sides 458489)are ace too!

cheers guys
