Past or present?
The Beast was mental - they had to demolish it because it was deemed unsafe. Nothing held you in and you fired 'round really steep corners and occasionally thought you were going to die. None of this 18 safety straps nonsense that you get on Oblivion!

Nemesis
by miles. Air and Oblivion are still pretty good though, if short.
i thought nemesis was overrated
i much preferred Air
The one where you queue up to get your chin
bitten off by a horse.
I liked the carousel most.
Air.
--------END THREAD--------
^ i've still not been on that
i need to get back
literally the best hing ever.
*Thing
are you trying to imitate my Scottish accent?
air is ace!!!
NO.Nemesis is the best ride in the park.
Air is good, but Nemesis blows the fucking shit off Air. It is also the most Metal rollercoaster ever. THE WATER IS BLOOD RED.
ROOOAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRr
BLOOOOOOD
I'm having a metal day today.
^exactly this
Air is way too slow. Even Rita's better than Air, and that only lasts two seconds.
rita is ACENESSS
i remember that
they closed it just before i first went, i think. it was just opposite nemesis wasn't it. they left the frame up, all derelict and stuff. i've not been to alton towers in years :(
^ the very one.
You used to come a good couple of inches out your seat and there was nothing but 2 flimsy bars down either side (a la the log flume) to hold onto.
Genuinely fearing for your safety is far scarier than a 1.5second vertical drop
some pics
of the beast on http://www.towerstimes.co.uk/history/oldrides/altonbeast.htm
i miss that ride
THE MAGIC CARPET!!!!
I got so upset on that when i was wee because i was scared
i miss
the beast - it was ace. definately dangerous as hell though, that first drop was a killer if i remember rightly.
what was that one which was dead opposite the nemesis with the big loop? that was ace as well.
Thunder Looper.
Very freaking good.
Thunder Looper.
That was awesome because you only had a flimsy bar on your lap. It was sponsored by Shock Waves though, which lost it cool points
god bless the internet

some footage of thunder looper and the beast :D
THUNDER LOOPER - UPDATE
The actual Thunder Looper that was in Alton Towers is now in a Brazilian them park under the guise of Katapul. And prior to Alton Towers. it was originally located in Paramount's Kings Dominion as "King Kobra", where it ran from 1977 to 1986, before being moved to Jolly Roger Amusement Park as "King Kobra", where it was operated from 1987 to 1989, until it reached AT in 1990, where it was one of the classic rides from 1990 to 1996, when it was chucked out because of tree height limits imposed by The Local Council.
:D
Rollercoasters scare me
Although I handled the dodgems on Brighton pier very well. And that other ride, the one where you go round in a circle and the little pods you sit in go up and down. Perhaps I should brave Alton Towers, I might surprise myself.
*waltzers
not dodgems.
oh i forgot rita
if only for the first second
It is ace. The hill after the first turn is pretty awesome too.
THUNDER LOOPER
^ :D
air
also
anyone remember the original energiser? that was stupidly good before they started playing around with it and moving it all over the shot
^ :D
The one beside Oblivion and Enterprise Wheel is pretty good too
Yes.
Energizer was amazing, but Boneshaker was crap...
The old ones where you feel like you're
going to fall out are far more exciting.
Oblivion is alright, but you feel WAY too safe - there's no thrill in it if you know you're totally secure.
The wooden rollercoasters at Blackpool are pretty good too
Grand National is the best ride I have ever been on.
TOOOOOOTALLY.
It's hilariously funny AND you can easily fall off.
Ah, fellow Rollercoaster Tycooner :)
:-O
I need to get rollercoaster tycoon back! It's at home, I need to make another 'metalcoaster' which does 8gs.
you could have large, plastic dead ravens as queue decor
one of my fave things about RC3
is the ability to add music to the rides, that comes out of the little speakers. I'm thinking having lots of dry ice/fog, and some Sunn o)) playing.
HA!
But RCT2 rules the roost. Banked corner drops FTW.
Air is REALLLLLLLY dull.
It's almost worse than that one that's a ghost story and then they trick you into thinking the rooms spinning coz its cursed by a giant log.
Nemesis or Oblivion. None of the others come close. The black hole was good cos it was so old you thought the straps might break at any minute.
I think it should be compulsory
for rollercoasters to have totally lame back-stories, told via poorly maintained animatronics in the queuing area.
"it's a science experiment gone wrong... and in the mad professors haunted laboratory.. they.. found..this...rollercoaster...."
^ :D:D:D:D:D:D
If this doesn't make the
DiS weekly mailout, there's NO JUSTICE!
what is the weekly mailout?
should i be glad i might be in it?
It's the weekly
yet informative email from the boys at drownedinsound, covering all your musical and humour needs IN ONE EMAIL!
never went on air
but nemesis front row was incredible. Worth the extra 20 min for front row, deffo.
SPACE MOUNTAIN
get out
:D
srsly GET OUT.
its sucks
that the blackhole has gone as well, such a awesome ride. went on a day trip to AT with my school yonks back - a few of us spent a good 3 hours going on black hole non stop for some reason
the gravatron
which isnt there anymore :( it was good climbing walls! hehe
WAVESWINGER FTW
but thats not a rollercoaster is it. I always thought 'what if one of these chains snapped and I went careering into the energiser?'.
Anyway. THE MOUSE always looked amazing when I went as a small child, but it had been dismantled before I was old enough to ride. THE BEAST was horrific due to lack of seat belts more than anything else. THE BLACK HOLE was/is ace owing to being the beast in the dark.
Still, NEMESIS remains the bestest thing in the world, although OBLIVION is ace if you don't end up queing for ever, and AIR is nice.
Black Hole FTW
I can't even remember if i actually went on nemesis, or whether i just told everyone i did so i didn't look like i was too scared, and have now begun to convince myself that i actually went on it. I'm going with 'i chickened out'.
I definitely went on oblivion, it was lame, queued for 40 minutes in the boiling sun, then it only lasts for like 10 seconds or something. bah.
+1 for Black Hole
Last time i went on it it got stuck right at the end and you could hear the next ride getting closer and closer...
Anyone here been to Oakwood?
The ONLY theme park in Wales?
It makes quite a good afternoon out.
http://www.oakwoodthemepark.co.uk/home/default.asp
nemesis is great
and because its pretty old now you don't have to queue for very long so you can just go round and round and round.
