in Cambridge is held in a church, and that's ace. The pews are uncomfortable, but there's something wonderful about getting gradually drunk over a day and watching the likes of Chris Corsano and Sunburned hand of the man.
i ask because my housemate saw low at a church the other day and said the atmosphere was kind of oppressive; that the band's perfomance seemed to be affected by the venue. despite the fact that i'm an atheist i have a curiously romantic idea of seeing a band in a church.
I've played/been to shows at a couple of churchs in Leeds. They've been okay. I wasn't sat there wanking over the surroundings like some people, though.
... if it's a really amazing church, it can really lend to the occasion and atmosphere of a gig, surely?
I remember seeing Arab Strap at the Union Chapel, and Aidan Moffat coming out onto the stage, looking up to the eaves and saying to himself "aye, fuckin' nice this eh?"
at SxSW last year and while it was a tad odd (no booze, no smoking etc) it was really good. They had good sound guys though, after a while thought the pews became rather uncomfortable.
did play a church. i was there and then they busked outside playing wake up. it was nearly the best gig of my life
churches.. union chapel wins for me - i've seen patrick wolf, jamie t and laura marling there. absolutely incredible venue with amazing acoustic. really adds something to the music

In summary: yes. Very
That doesn't make sense.
Basically, I'm saying I like drinking in church coz its naughty coz God hates alcohol. Tee hee.
Doesn't God
make you drink his blood (wine) in church?
The wine's been turned into ACTUAL blood. That's
the miracle.
Unless
making black pudding this is rather wasteful. Bad God/Priests.
only if you're Catholic
ahh good

Norwich and Colchester
Arts Centre are both converted churches
Union Chapel, Islington
saw Spiritualized there just before Xmas and it was wonderful. Great acoustics. I think Jesus would've liked it.
colchester arts centre
is great. one of my favourite venues.
The Union Chapel
Is f**king amazing! Seen 2 gigs there and want to see more :-) Love it!
I went to see Willy Mason in a church
at SxSW last year and while it was a tad odd (no booze, no smoking etc) it was really good. They had good sound guys though, after a while thought the pews became rather uncomfortable.

Yup
called The Mass - grubby shit-hole (or was a few years back). There is a nice vegetarian restaurant in the same building.

yes indeed
Oran Mor in glasgow used to be a church
does that count?
i've seen The Evens
in a catholic church hall and in a methodists church
both times were really good.
When Arcade Fire
played in a church it was just amazing. Kind of surreal, in between songs the crowd were silent and ahhhh man, it was so good : )
Saw ASMZ
at Colchester Arts Centre last year. That was a great gig.
