I'm not really a metal fan but I love Toxicity by System of a Down.

Are there any other metal bands this good?
Please don't point me towards Metallica, Megadeth or Slipknot.

ISIS

TOOL

I'm sorry but Tool is

dumb

in what possible sense are tool dumb?

They have albums based on mathematical progressions (lateraleus) and are surely the closest thing metal has to 'a radiohead'. Bizarre comment.

They also have a son called Stinkfist

and are shit.

song*

Boris

Isis
Pelican
Jesu
Sunn)))

the new Torche album is ace

not far removed from Queens Of The Stone Age, powerful fuzzed out metal rock pop or somat. I dunno I'm outa touch with the metal scene.

i'll put forward

Genghis Tron

Russian Circles?

Don't know if it really counts as "Metal" but that's my two cents, take it or leave it. Oh, and Red Sparowes. Again, not really metal, but fit into the whole Isis and Pelican type of stuff, innit.

Pan

eraaa

Slayer - Reign In Blood

remains essential
Mastodon - Blood Mountain

I got a good one this year called
Disfear - Live The Storm

the point of metal

is that its meant to be dumb !

false

manowar

?

no that is true

Metal = Dumb

Which is nobad thing

Intelligent metal = boring wank

false

Type O Negative is good for beginners

This is all thinking person's metal:

Tool
Boris
Opeth
Kyuss
Dethklok: (music from a cartoon band, it's so dumb that it's not dumb)
Rammstein

When you get on to one of these; comeback and I'll give you some more.

How can...

Metal be dumb when it is techincally the hardest type of music to play well?

You're dumb.

Should we let you in on the secret

of how to reply in the right place?

lolwut

I'm listening to lots of the following, who are good:

Kyuss
Comets on Fire
Torche
Boris
Melvins

They're pretty big and dumb, but in a delightfully intelligent and monstrous way.

I love metal...

Dream Theater
Ayreon
Pain Of Salvation
Symphony X
Dark Angel
Epica
Dark Moor
Akercocke
Nightwish
Dimmu Borgir

Just a list of 10 that immediately come to mind. Metal is far more interesting and technical that most people think. A lot of it is an acquired taste but once you acquire that taste, you will never look back.

Enjoy.

Karma To Burn

for some instrumental metal

Clutch

Turd

Megadeth and Metallica were two of the greatest thrash bands ever you turd.

Everything Metallica released up to 1986 is sheer brilliance. Justice for All is okay and the Black Album is complete and utter dogshit. Megadeth were patchier but til 1990 they still released awesome records. Peace Sells and Rust in Peace are classics of the genre. The idea of lumping in late 90's pop metal with stuff that pioneered the Genre is retarded.

Best thrash bands round at the moment are Municipal Waste and SSS.

Also whoever recommended Dream Theater needs their balls cutting off, if they haven't sold them on World of Warcraft already.

ion dissonance

botch
thirtycalledarson
nostromo

Old Man Gloom

there

Fuck off...

Dream Theater are fucking amazing. There is more happening in a single 5 minute song than in an entire Metallica album, and Metallica are awesome too.

No, I am not into World Of Warcraft nor will I ever will be. I am not a geek, i just know good music. You fucking prick 'isthisinteresting'.

...

Alternatively: Dream Theater are one of the worst bands ever. The only things going on in their songs are the soundtrack to a million final boss battles on the SNES and a man-sized block of cheese standing at the front, wearing leather trousers, and a red light on the ground in front of him, angled up at his face so he can look 'evil' when he sings the 'darker' words.

Also: The drummer wears a bandanna.

if you had left it at the following

"The only things going on in their songs are the soundtrack to a million final boss battles on the SNES" then I would have been sold.

Dream Theater is tasteless garbage

They make the most self-assured, smug crap ever created.

I vote

Meshuggah!

Paradoxically

You request metal that isn't dumb, and then cite System of a Down as one of your favourite bands. *hangs head in shame*

I hate these types of threads. 'Recommend me some metal that isn't dumb.'I suggest you stick to your commercial crap and come back when you've got a clue.

What? I'm in a bad mood.

...

'I suggest you stick to your commercial crap and come back when you've got a clue.'

well said mate.

hmmm

sigur ros

Thank you to everyone who offered

bands as suggestions. I will try and look into as many as possible.

Just to clarify I don't really like much metal but I like heavy sounds.

SOAD, despite having some pretty stupid lyrics, have a musical intelligence and a sense of adventure and spontaneity that makes them very interesting to me - at least on Toxicity anyway.

If I offended anyone with the 'dumb' comment then they should probably grow up a little.

Thanks to the adults once again.

sorry, I'm not an adult.

Meshuggah!

cro-mags

thats as close to metal as im willing to stray really.. although some thrash is quite good.

What's Dillinger Escape Plan?

Doesn't matter, listen anyway!

(I get the feeling it isn't most popular choice around here, but Ire Works is millions of times better than anything they did before it)

GWAR

definitely belong to this thread

I thought everyone

liked Ire Works around here? The review staff certainly did. Even if it's not better than Calculating Infinity.

I SAID WHAT WE WERE ALL THINKING!

Anyway, if it's just "heavy sounds" you're after, then Converge demand a mention.

Also: telling someone to grow up is an instant message board loss. It's in the Internet's house rules.

yeah but Black Bubbegum

total metalcore, and that's well gay innit

black bubblegum is a trojan horse...

with 'Calculating Infinity' hiding inside.

Just imagine the over-priveleged American teens hearing BB going 'cool' and rushing off to get the DEP back-catalogue.

Yeah, I do like Black Bubblegum

But it's stuff like Milk Lizard and it's ilk that makes me choose Ire Works over the rest of DEP's back catalogue.

feels like never ending....

I LOVE how hardcore hardcore fans get all bothered by DEP's more poptastic moments. It's hilarious.

i'm not a hardcore fan

i like poptasm

Black Bubblegum is a Bad Song

maybe listen too...

earthtone9
twin zero

... and maybe some bands on the hydrahead label.

Dethklok - The Dethalbum

It's the only album you'll ever need.

I'm pretty sure

I remember pretty much this exact same thread with exactly the same recommendations a month or two ago...

Oh and Opeth and Tool are the two you can't go far wrong with...

i am surprised

no one has mentiond fear factory?
i agree with rammstein, sepultura, kyuss and have to say killing joke's Pandemonium and Hoseannas from tkhe basement of hell are metal even tho they started off as punk. was it me or was there a sub genre called IQ metal (invented by some bored hack at kerrang)which Queenryche and Kings X were leading exponents. thats a seriously lame name for a sub genre!

ps

Type O Negative's Bloody Kisses album is amazing!

Ooooh I liked Kings X

saw them a few times actually. Never let the fairly unsubtle Christian subtext get in the way of me enjoying the songs.

Helmet

Meantime

Opeth

new album leaked this week. Surprise surprise, it's rather good.

get Saviours - Into Abbadon

It came out a couple of months ago, and it's really good.

I don't think anyone has mentioned:

Ephel Duath
Fear Before The March Of Flames
Dog Fashion Disco

All these bands have experimental tendancies and aren't stereotypical "dumb" metal.

rolo tomassi

the locust
down i go

maybe?

how do you define 'dumb'?

It's like with hip hop, people claim they like 'intelligent' hip hop, so i presume that's hip hop that isn't about gang banging and such? That's unfair, what about Wu, or Lil' Wayne, or Clipse?

I love Weedeater, but they are all probably thick as two short planks.

But yeah... what everyone else said, really.

check out

Sikth

I think we've been misinterpreting this thread

I think he means 'dumb' as in 'incapable of speech'. He's asking for metal that isn't instrumental in origin (like Pelican for example). Suddenly it all makes sense.

Check out Bossk (like Pelican with vocals)

Deftones - White Pony

Heavy AND melodic, intelligent yet accessible. A good place to start!

sorry

i just saw that several people suggested kyuss.
they are really rather dumb

as fuck.

seriously.

as are deftones, it's just that chino has a capacity for writing amazing lyrics and they have a knack of piecing things together nicely.

however this could go on down the line and then we'd all be bored.

no
