4 months gone. looking back so far, it's been fairly disappointing for albums but good for gigs. here's my top tips:

albums:
tickley feather - tickley feather
robedoor - closer to the cliff
prurient - and still, wanting
fuck buttons - street horrrsing
the magnetic fields - distortion
jack rose - i do play rock and roll
nalle - the siren's wave
grey daturas - return to disruption

gigs:
gay against you @ bardens
fuck buttons @ ica
richard youngs @ cross kings
boris @ cargo
david thomas broughton @ green note (despite the venue)
pink reason @ bardens
casiotone for the painfully alone + max tundra @ bush hall
library tapes + james blackshaw + dead rat orchestra + spoono @ gramaphone
black dice + family underground + chops @ cargo
bjork @ hammersmith apollo
old time relijun + magik markers @ cargo
japanese new music festival @ corsica studios
talibam @ whitechapel art gallery

it felt like a worthwhile thing to do at the time...

obviously i haven't heard every album out this year

but the only one i found relatively stand-out-ish is 'Paralyzed' by Witch. other than that...

i've seen too many forgettable gigs this year.

i've actually felt like listening to fewer albums this year

and try to give proper full-on attention and lovin' to the lucky few.

would you recommend the prurient album?

maybe check out Frightened Rabbit & Boris albums?

yeah

prurient's album is great. it's not so 'squeaky' (if that's a good way to describe it) as the few other albums i've got by him. just really harsh/full-on.

i've got the boris one but haven't properly listened to it yet. will check out frightened rabbit, thanks!

I really didn't rate Frightened Rabbit when I saw 'em live the other week.

They just sounded like A.N.Other Generic Indie Band. No idea what the album sounds like though.

I saw Frightened Rabbit in Stirling a week or two ago

and they were alright, not wonderful, but better than A.N.Other Generic Indie Band I'd say

by the look of it, you are having a great year so far (esp. gigs)

I love fuck buttons and the magnetic fields. "Smile" the new Boris is quite good. I've been thinking about checking out black dice. What are the must haves in your album list?

I saw Liars and No Age in January but nothing since- I live in Montana and have to drive extreme distances for gigs. Hoping to see fuck buttons in the fall and maybe no age again this summer

top 4 would probably be

fuck buttons, magnetic fields, prurient, tickley feather

if you get a black dice album, i'd go for beaches & canyons, but they're all good.

definitely see fuck buttons if you can.

the

new subtle is the best thing i've heard this year

why?

some stuff i was excited about has disappointed me a bit, and there's not been as many unexpectedly good albums as the same point last year. of course i've heard heard every release, but i just get that feeling from what i have heard.

New albums by

Tindersticks, The Fall and Portishead in ONE DAY last Monday! This has been a great year for albums already.

Let's not forget Nick Cave and the Mountain Goats too.

oh and gigs

ASMZ @ Scala - wow.
